MM wife has just passed away.

Let's just say that if Kwa Geok Choo were not LKY's wife, she would have died long time ago. Instead of being bedridden and slowly fading away in top-notch medical facilities, all the while funded by taxpayers' monies, of course.

Condolences? None shall be given. She's not a pop star or a highly influential/respected public figure. She's just a spouse of a dictator. I choose schadenfreude, gloating over his loss of a wife.

Anyhow, her death surely marks the imminent death of the old man. Which is a good thing. Let's see if he rises from his grave. Let's see if Loong can be his own man (doubt it). Let's see if the PAP splinters into two or more factions. Let's see if Singapore will crumble without him.

Time will reveal everything.

OK let me set this straight. When people die, even if you hate this person to the last pubic hair, you send condolences.

You can scold, fuck, whatever please do AFTER funeral.

Be human ok. If you want people respect, first respect others.

Some people do not deserve condolences. This sub-human being that just died is one of them. For over 50 years she has sucked the live out of her countrymen. She deserves a good :oIo:

Well behind every great man is a greater woman. LKY is sure a lucky bastard. The way he describe his wife and giving her credit must have some truth. Trust me it is dam difficult to fight life alone and come home to find that you are alone. Some wives are liabilities and apparently his is an asset. During tough times, it will show whether you have a good wife. Very sad that such a great relationship had come to an end. RIP.

If only PAP heed your advice before drafting condolences letter to JBJ's sons.

Loong can never be a man. He is also lacks intelligence. His entire time is spent thinking how to fix the opposition and the buy votes.

The PAP will not splinter. They have chosen yes-men well who will not rock the boat. Splintering the PAP will mean losing their iron rice bowl and may actually lead to their own downfall.

A splintered PAP is a weak PAP especially today with so many screw ups and no more than a handful of really qualified and good MPs. You can count only Tharman with some brains and qualifications to lead his ministry. Everyone else is walking on stilts and sparring above their weight level.

The PAP will continue its ways. What I expect them to do is to up the dirty politics to stay in power.

CONDOLENCE LETTER FROM PRIME MINISTER LEE HSIEN LOONG ON DEMISE OF JB JEYARETNAM
30 September 2008
Mr Kenneth Jeyaretnam
Mr Philip Jeyaretnam
Dear Kenneth and Philip Jeyaretnam
I was sad to learn that your father, Mr Joshua Benjamin Jeyaretnam, has passed away.
Mr JB Jeyaretnam was a Member of Parliament for Anson constituency from 1981 till 1986, and a Non-Constituency Member of Parliament from 1997 till 2001. He used to engage in heated debates in the House. Perhaps it was because he and the PAP never saw eye to eye on any major political issue and he sought by all means to demolish the PAP and our system of government. Unfortunately, this helped neither to build up a constructive opposition nor our Parliamentary tradition. Nevertheless, one had to respect Mr JB Jeyaretnam’s dogged tenacity to be active in politics at his age.
However, our differences were not personal. In 1993, one of you (Kenneth) wrote to Mr Goh Chok Tong, who was then Prime Minister, to say that you found employers in Singapore reluctant to offer you a job, and your only explanation was that the employers felt the authorities would not welcome your employment because of your name. Mr Goh replied with a letter which could be shown to prospective employers, to say that the government did not hold anything against you, and that employers should evaluate you fairly on your own merits, like any other candidate, because Singapore needed every talented person that it could find. Mr Goh had previously made the same point to your brother Philip, whom he had invited to lunch. I am therefore happy that both of you have established yourselves in Singapore.
Please accept my deepest condolences.
Yours sincerely
Lee Hsien Loong

Without You - Harry Nilsson

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERhvqJzmZAY

No, I can't forget this evening
Or your face as you were leaving
But I guess that's just the way the story goes
You always smile but in your eyes your sorrow shows
Yes, it shows

No, I can't forget tomorrow
When I think of all my sorrows
When I had you there but then I let you go
And now it's only fair that I should let you know
What you should know

I can't live if living is without you
I can't live, I can't give any more
Can't live if living is without you
I can't give, I can't give any more

No, I can't forget this evening
Or your face as you were leaving
But I guess that's just the way the story goes
You always smile but in your eyes your sorrow shows
Yes, it shows

Can't live if living is without you
I can't live, I can't give anymore
I can't live if living is without you
Can't live, I can't give anymore

Re: Conveyancing Fees

She made much more than he ever did. It was the pre-eminent property law firm in Singapore. During her time, conveyancing fees was the highest in the world. Not many people were aware of that. Singaporeans used to pay nearly $7k for a 3 bedroom condo in the 1990s when you only paid a few hundred dollars for large bungalow in a first world country. The irony was that the torrens title system was already in Singapore in the 50s.

Let not forget the charitable act of HDB conveyancing.

Conveyancing fees in Toronto is on average about $500, very seldom more than $1,000.00.

Sometimes, I wonder how those law firms here in Toronto can do it for so little. But I believe that $7,000 for a condo in 1990 in SG appears very expensive. They must made very significant net revenue.

Re: Estate Duty

The bungalow at Cluny Hill with 51,000 sq ft of freehold land I estimate is currently worth about $105m.

Most recent transaction at 20b Nassim Rd was at $2100 psf.

Because of empress & emperor's ownership, about 15 years ago the road leading to Cluny Hill was converted to a one way street for security reason I guess.

I believe that the people in power more than likely considered the estate duty, and accordingly, amended the estate duty.

In adition, I believe that they will everything possible to avoid having sensitive info available to the public through probate of her estate. Therefore, transferring her assets to a family trust is a good alternative, not just to avoid estate duty, although I am not familiar with SG legislation now, as I have been away for almost three decades.

Re: Letter of Condolences

Good point. That letter was a shocker and he is the PM.

It would have been better if the PM had asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to proof read his draft letter. Otherwise, if it was me, I would have kept it short and simple: [I am saddened to hear of the passing of your father, who has been a very determined politician. May he rest in peace and may his memory be eternal. My sincere condolences to you and your family.]

I hope the changing of the guards would help us understand our real history.
A lot of younger gen dont know that Singapore wasnt the colonial backwater that the PAP and LKY would rather we remember, but a thriving global port and at a major busy crossroads. A lot of credit must be given to the British too - the CPF e.g. was their innovation, so was housing for the masses to wit, S.I.T. flats, the SHB, precursor of the PSA, and of course the railway.

sorry guys but Mrs. Lky wasn't like a hitler who was controversial....
I think we should show some respect or even sensitivity for her loss....
I don't particularly like or dislike her.... Just wanted to show my respects that's all....

The alliances are within the Cadres system and not amongst the political office bearers.

GCT has hung around in order not to disappoint his followers who were ardently recruited when he became PM 20 years ago. Apparently its a different crowd with many professionals brought in. I am sure he will step down sooner rather than later now that their counterpart is waning fast.

Interestingly, I think we are looking at a power vacuum even though
a family member controls the powerful Home Affairs and PA.There is also a possibility that a family conference will be held soon to make a final decision to step in or out. Kwa Kim Li is the most influential and powerful person in the clan now and there is none from Lees' side. Corporate Singapore will be behind her.

Interesting times.

Dear Scroo

Old man was wiser than his arch rival in this regards who stepped down and went from controlling the media to having to depend on the internet and blogs to get his message across.

He was the first amongst equals and after retiring his equals, he was well just first. always was during GCT's time and even more so during his son's time. He was however intelligent enough during the tenure of GCT to let GCT take the lead, under his son however I can't help but sense what am I paying for as a tax payer when the PM still has to take some direction from MM. On every major gov policy screw up or announcement under LHL , MM goes first.

GCT is still hanging ard for a reason in Cabinet, for there is where the power lies as Mahatir found out to his costs. so who are we left with who has been around long enough to have a base within the party and the party cardre's who decided everything ?
How strong is LHL with his father declining ? Will there be a compromise candidate to replace LHL if he is not strong enough and who will it be ? How loyal is his father's base to LHL ? Questions questions quesions
