Asian values as defined by LKY himself is double speak for justifying a paternal political system to eschew liberal democracy from taking root. Thus if you've bought into his definition of Asian values, you've been brainwashed.

Agree, something that JBJ struggled with in parliament.

I respect JBJ but when he opened his mouth to touch on economic matters,I held my breath.

Something is missing here.

Nice observation and it does not really square with the greater respect shown by LKY to people like Lee Siew Choh and the Communist who would have shot him at the very least if they won.

The communists fought on ideology. JBJ fought on a personal vendetta after TBT passed him over. It was apparent even in the parliamentary committee hearing when JBJ crossed examined LKY on why he, JBJ, as first magistrate, was not promoted to high court judge.

Asian Values and Asian Democracy was coined by LKY in the early to mid 90s. It was to stem the tide of liberal democracy and western influence. Further weight was added using the Asian culture of filial piety and a loosely, if not badly translated version of Confucian teaching was extolled. Our ASEAN neighbors too found the term useful to practice their own brand of "democracy".

Asian values died a premature death in the aftermath of Asian financial crisis in 1997/98 when corruption; lack of transparency and gross mismanagement was uncovered and deemed to be primer for the mess.

If I recall correctly, it was GCT who made a slip with to reference to Confucian values versus liberal democracy, forgetting that ethnic Chinese may be majority but not everybody. LKY made quick damage control by glossing it over with Asian values.
