Ready to go on offence
By Jeremy Au Yong

LABOUR Chief Lim Swee Say said the Labour movement is ready to go on the offence.

After spending much of the last year on defensive moves like saving jobs and preventing retrenchments, the focus now should move towards getting back to full employment and continuing to build an inclusive workforce.

He laid out some of the Labour movement's plans for the coming year at a press conference on Monday morning. The event was not just to look ahead but also to review the work of the labour movement in 2009.

Mr Lim, who is also a Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, said he was pleased with what had been achieved this year.

They had set out at the beginning of the year with the aim of keeping retrenchment and unemployment rates in check. And despite having to face the worst economic slump since independence, job loss figures were below those recorded during the Asian Financial Crisis and the Sars outbreak.

Current estimates put job losses for the year at around 20,000. In 1998, 29,000 people lost their jobs.

Simple solution to simple problems.

He gets voted out and he is the one joining the unemployment queue!
:D

Surely it should be "... go on the OFFENSIVE."

Would any English experts out there care to comment?

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/offensive

"Clothes does not maketh a man", even though the qualification look impressive. What you expect from one, that speaks with a 'coffee shop' ah beng accent, sings off key "Hokkien flavoured" songs, that thinks in Chinese, writes in English.

This what you get for paying million dollars, you get a clown like that?, "go on the offence"...speak that with an bang accent, sing song way...

it is correct " gore on the or fence"...get it! :D

Surely it is above us lesser mortals to correct them.

Just be thankful that he is not in charge of education.

Just don't tempt providence....:D the unexpected, always happen..:p

Wah, for a burmese, your england is not bad leh..:oIo:

LABOUR chief Lim Swee Say says the labour movement is ready to go on the offensive - aiming, among others, to get Singapore back to full employment.
After spending much of this year on defensive moves such as saving jobs and preventing layoffs, the focus now should move towards lowering the unemployment rate and continuing to build an inclusive workforce, he said on Monday morning.
He laid out some of the plans of the National Trades Union Congress at a press conference, during which he also gave a review of NTUC's work this year.
Mr Lim, who is also a Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, said he was pleased with this year's achievements, particularly its goalto keep retrenchment and unemployment rates in check.
Despite facing the worst economic slump since independence, Singapore's job loss figures were below those recorded during the Asian Financial Crisis in 1998 and the Sars outbreak in 2003.
The NTUC estimates that job losses for the year will hit 20,000. In 1998, 29,000 people lost their jobs.

SPENT!

Take note of the Pinoy name that took the photo for SPH. In the whole of SG, is it that difficult to find a Singaporean photographer???

Just take a look at SPH and MEdiacorp and you will notice a lot of FTs and it should make youwonder why a Singaporean wasn't picked for the job. These FTs have taken jobs that Singaporeans could have easily rendered. And these FTs have done NOTHING to enhance the company's output .

But of course these FTs help to fill the otherwise empty condos built by MIW, GLCs and friends.

KNNPCB PAP!!!

"Spent" is past tense which is not appropriate in this case as the activity is ongoing. EG: "He spent 10 dollars last week"

"Spend" is simple present tense which is appropriate in describing what the journalists are doing on an ongoing basis. EG: "They spend 500 dollars a week on food".

You need English lessons too. Here's a link which will help you.

Well done Sam. Tells you this is the place to be, 10 years and still going strong.

Americans as of late tend to cut it to offence as result of gridiron usage while the conventional usage is offensive.

If it's ok, why did ST change from "offence" to "offensive" after they read this thread.

hahahaha!

it's used in american journalism (see links), but if they think they are writing the queen's english, they better go thru' the grammar check here... with you.

"[The] Bishops Go On Offense
By Robert Royal
A Notre Dame professor reminded me this week of an old football saying: offense sells seats, but defense wins games. Painfully true about the problems of the Irish this year, but I’ve never thought much of that proposition. Taken to its logical extreme, the most you could hope for relying solely on defense is 0-0 ties." [snip]

and there are more examples, but you get the idea. it's an american thang.
