This is a mismatch. The thing about comic book match ups is that many forget the power difference between characters.
The Black Panther is a low superhuman that has defeated rhinos in a hand to hand fight with difficulty, Iron Man is an S tier who has fought the Hulk and Won. You see where I’m going, but many have stated that it’s not a physical match up that decides the fight, but the intellectual side of the battle, and on that side it’s not gonna go much better for T’challa anyway.
So, as others have pointed out, Black Panther has outsmarted Tony three times, but there’s several issues with this, the first, and smallest is that in one of these times he had the black blade (I think that’s its name), which is not in his standard arsenal, and is literally able to cut anything. That gives a massive advantage to Black Panther, one that he would not have in this fight.
The second issue is much more important, these are older armors for Tony Stark, now this may not seem like a big deal but in 2/3 fights Tony and T’challa have had T’challa has won by overriding Tony’s armor or hacking it or something of the sort. Since then however, Tony has fixed all of these issues and more. Now Tony’s armor is completely immune to EMP’s, Phasing, Internal attacks, Magic, and Telepathy.
But he still has his ego right?
Well… yes, but not to the same extent. Since the events of Civil War Tony has moderated his character a good deal, arguably because of the more moderated version of him in the MCU. Regardless he no longer believes he is the best at everything and he prepares for every eventuality.
In addition to this overall Tony is just… smarter. He’s defeated Reed Richards in 5 chess matches at the same time, is considered the greatest multitasker in his universe and has outsmarted alien civilizations centuries ahead of him easily many times. Black Panther is a genius, but he’s not quite on Tony’s level.
And can we go back to the Physicals for a second?!? T’Challa’s suit is LACED with vibranium not made of it but regardless it would allow him to not be one shotted by Tony. But in spite of that Tony is faster (5 times the speed of light is his record), more durable (Tanking a nuke without an issue), Stronger (knocking out the hulk, pulling of thousands of tons worth of ships, etc), and most importantly, more versatile. Black Panther has some crazy weapons, phasing knives and more, but this doesn’t compare AT ALL to Tony Stark. His recent armors are nanotechnology and respond to his thoughts meaning that he can literally make any weapon he wants in a fight. Be it Sonics capable of killing the juggernaut, shields to imprison Apakolyps, or just…. okay, I don’t know what to even call that.
As an aside, “I like Donuts” is allot cooler in context.
Anyway you see what I mean. Iron Man is so far ahead of Black Panthers stats it’s not even funny. The Panther is low superhuman, that’s it, for that level he’s impressive, but Iron man is several tiers above him. Bottom line is, Black Panther is a human king, and Tony Stark is, according to Thor, the equivalent to a god.
Iron Man wins.
Again, as an aside, I’m pretty sure Iron Man is a god. He made himself functionally immortal by downloading his consciousness into his armor. People worship him. He is powerful enough, and Thor himself believes he is basically a god.
You know, come to think of it, all things considered Tony is pretty humble.
