Mark Balakrishnan Caught Helping To Rag A Female Student In ACJC

He's just a kid who is having some fun. Why link him to what his father has done? Judge him only when he decides to enter the parliament and when he starts to shoot his mouth off.

Don't you think it's unfair to judge him solely based on this incident?

I don't get some of you guys at all. It's one thing to hate the PAP, one thing to hate the father for saying some stupid things and standing his ground on stupid policies, it's another thing to condemn his children for doing something which is not politically related.

This is little different. Viv B is well known amongst his cohort in University for refusing to be ragged and walked out of the Medical fraternity orientation program. He was the only scholar that year that walked out and the only 1st year medical student to walk out and gave some sanctimonious reason for abolishing ragging. He was ostracised and had to fall on the feet of Arthur Lim, defacto leader of the medical fraternity, old man's family friend and co-organiser of his 80th Birthday later on his career to resurrect his career.

As you might know, staying in a hostel is PSC requirement for 1st year for scholars to mentally toughen our softies.

So what happenned? In politics you walk the talk and that includes family.

Nah! this does not apply to the Brotherhood of the Lee!!!!!!!!!:mad::mad:

Come on lah, he is just a teenager. During our teenage days, we also have our share of fun. Leave this guy alone, and focus on big issues. Like counting the number of minutes in each hour.

In politics, you don't have to walk the talk if you can manage to get away with it, by convincing the voters.

How did he end up getting elected as student president?

Back to his son's case, really no biggie man, appears to be just teenage high jinx, unless the gal took offence which does not appear to be the case from the pics. Pity ACJC though, suay suay getting stomped again.

NUS students Union is not taken seriously at all. Hardly anyone turns up to vote. The real political battles are usually at hostels levels and certains societies. President of Students Union has to liaise with Uni's Student Liaision Officer - a mid admin level staff.

Presidents of all Halls sit on the College delegacy which is made up of Deputy Vice Chancellor, some independent people of profile and Masters of Halls. Usually one MP is appointed to the Delegacy which meets 4 times a year.

Student Union AGM will not have any qurom. The consitituion allows the AGM to proceed after half and hour.

Political activism originates from the Halls of Residence and thus their seat in the College Delegacy. The numbers are in the halls which are highly parochial and politically very active. To keep their appetite in check, Cabinet Ministers must attend Halls Dining In in rotation and closed door sessions are held with hall leaders.

Tan Wah Piow and Juliet Chin power bases were from the Halls of Residence. Even till today, old boy networks can be traced to these halls and what was done.

Karpal Singh, DAP Stalwart came from Dunern Rd (Sheares Hall). Mahathir and Arthur are Kevians and tight as ever.

Vivian went for Student Union Presidency as he would not be elected even to the post of Recreational Sec in King Edward Hall.

Remember the University Students who got arrested for sedition in the Fajar episode - it was a society.

By the way, Viv, Simon Tay , TT Durai were Student Union Presidents - PAP supporters. Steve Chia was also a President but he was also President of the a Political Society where his power base was.

There is more to this than meets the eye.

As to the son, completely agree. It would have been better if Dad had told the family what a scene he created back in his time.

Thanks for the history. I did not know things were so politically active by the time Vivian went to NUS. You mean cabinet ministers still attend such University dinners even today?

Oh as for the "Eye" thinggy do you mean viz his son or Vivian?

In regard to politics in the Uni.

When you have the cream of the country (exclusing overseas scholars) attending a such an institution ( at that time only one), there is bound to be very keen interest in politics. After all they are consider themselves as leaders. In view of their age, they are all invariably left wing. They are looking for debates, dialoguges and discussions on many issues. These needs has to be met.

The hotbed are the halls. Thats where the ministers go to. Ordinary MPs have no chance of meeting these chaps. I know Ministers who have disowned or rubbished certain govt policies and I know Ministers who have painted the picture of old man as tyrant very clearly.

These are the chaps that will never ever wear the PAP whites.

Here is another angle. There are inter-hall debates held that are highly political and the judges are usually British lecturers as the locals might not be able to handle it.

Marxist Conspiracy was traced to Law school catholic group in NUS.

The early leaders of Malaysia and Singapore can be traced to Raffles or King Edward Hall. That includes old man, Goh, Kim San, Razak and whole plethora of Perm Secs on both sides.

Our High Court Judge Tan Lee Meng used to be Master of Raffles Hall and his Sr Fellows of the hall (lecturers) to the delight of the students were considered anti-establishment.

Its no different to Oxbridge / Harvard. Future leaders comes from certain societies like Debating, Labour Club, Law Review, Keys etc.
