Today, many parents and grandparents with children in tow, baby in arms, visited Sembawang Community Club.
They were there to get their COVID-19 jabs. Primary series for infants and toddlers from six months to 4 years, and boosters for children from 5 to 11 years.
I asked how did the babies take the jabs, and was told a symphony of cries has been ringing in the main hall of the CC. Still, these little ones are very brave, and doing their part to strengthen the resilience of our society against COVID-19!

Attended the last G20 Health Ministers’ Meeting (HMM) in Bali this year. It was a series of meetings held during extraordinary times, due to the global pandemic crisis.
While my stay was short, it was memorable - meeting the current Indonesian and next Indian Chair on the follow-up work; Dr Mansukh Mandaviya offering us goodies he brought from India; catching up with fellow health Ministers whom I got to know over the past year; learning about the tremendous reform-driven changes that are happening in Saudi Arabia.
Mostly importantly, over the past year, much work was done to address gaps in the global prevention, preparedness and response to the pandemic crisis.
The G20 HMM adopted a Chair’s Summary on Health Ministers’ Action to strengthen global health architecture. It is an important resource document and reference guide for us to follow up at subsequent G20 meetings.
I look forward to stronger ties and partnerships with the global community in our quest to prepare for the next pandemic. It is not a matter of whether it will happen, but when.

Celebrated HMI Institute's 20th anniversary yesterday, at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. This was started as a labour of love by founder Dr Gan See Khem.
I have worked with them since 2005, when I was CEO of the then Workforce Development Agency (WDA), to train mid-career entrants into the healthcare sector.
Over the years, HMI Institute has trained 6,000 mid-career support care workers. During the pandemic, HMI and its partners also stepped up to equip 87,000 workers with the necessary skills to run swabbing operations.
Manpower is a major challenge for the healthcare sector. It requires all hands on deck. I look forward to working with all partners, including HMI Institute, to address the challenge.

SINGAPORE - As Singapore continues to live with Covid-19 amid the XBB wave, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung raised four important guidelines:

1. Keeping up to date with vaccination

Those aged above 50 who have received three shots or had taken the last shot more than five months ago are advised to receive the bivalent version of Moderna's Spikevax vaccine.
Even as vaccine supplies are coming in, priority is now given to those aged above 50, as they are more likely to be severely ill if infected, said Health Minister Ong Ye Kung.

About 4,200 people took the bivalent vaccine jab on Friday when the vaccination was rolled out, he said.
Mr Ong said that more people are expected to take the vaccination and the vaccination centres will be open every day if needed. Currently, joint testing and vaccination centres (JVTC) are only open from Monday to Saturday afternoon.
"Get your vaccination updated, it will prevent you from becoming severely ill if you are infected," he said.

2. Possibility of resuming some safe management measures

Measures such as wearing masks indoors and outdoors and vaccination-differentiated measures (VDS) may resume if the Covid-19 situation worsens, said Mr Ong.

He said: "We stepped down all VDS but when the situation requires, we may have to step up VDS to an appropriate level in order to protect those who are not up to date with their vaccinations."
"We are monitoring the XBB very closely and the impact on the healthcare system to see if some of these measures are necessary. As of now, no decision has been taken."
VDS were fully lifted from Oct 10.

3. Hospital visitors' restrictions in place during Covid-19 waves

With spikes in Covid-19 cases, visitor safe management measures in the hospital were tightened from Friday. There were 11,732 new Covid-19 infections on Tuesday, more than double from the 4,719 new cases the day before.
"From time to time when we have a wave like that and hospitals come under additional pressure, we will have to restrict visitors," said Mr Ong.
On Oct 12, the Ministry of Health (MOH) announced that visitor safe management measures at all hospital wards and residential care homes will be tightened for four weeks, starting from Oct 14 to Nov 10, as Covid-19 cases in the community rise.

4. Personal responsibility is key

Those not feeling well or living with the elderly should mask up, said Mr Ong.
"Test yourself, isolate yourself when you're not feeling well," he said.
Those infected with Covid-19 should also follow the necessary protocol, he said.
Protocol 2 would be applicable to pregnant women and infants between the age of three months and one who test positive for Covid-19 from Oct 25, as the risk of severe illness is low, said MOH. This means that they will be able to recover by themselves at home. Currently, Covid-19 patients aged between three months and one, as well as women who are less than 36 weeks pregnant, follow Protocol 1, where MOH will check on their recovery.

OYK encourages people to get vaccinated as soon as you are eligible.

Since we rolled out primary vaccination for young children, there has been good take-up.
As of 1 November 2022, 14,000 children aged 6 months to 4 years have either pre-registered or received the Moderna/Spikevax vaccine; and 20,000 children between 5 to 11 years have either pre-registered or received the Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty booster.
To make it more convenient for families with more than one child, we will allow siblings of a child with an existing appointment on Mondays to Thursdays to receive their vaccinations at the same time, without the need for an appointment. This new arrangement will begin on 7 November 2022.
Parents should bring along their children’s identification documents for registration, and arrive at the Vaccination Centre (VC) by 5.30pm on Mondays to Thursdays. VC locations can be found at www.gowhere.gov.sg/vaccine.
Do get vaccinated as soon as you are eligible.
