In many ways, despite the Bumiputra policy and resurgence of Islamism, Malaysia has much more inter-ethnic mixing and integration than Singapore. You grow up in a Tamil village, you speak Tamil. Chinese kampung, you speak Mandarin and Cantonese/Hokkien. Everyone speaks Malay.
