civic mindedness behavior is based on empathy, consideration, compassion, kindness etc. its base on non zero sum game attitude. for example. if people keep to left side of the escalator, and keep the right side empty, one day, one might find it useful, to be able to hurry up/ hurry down the escalator. it brings efficiency to individual in the long run. its win win.

non civic mindedness behavior is stem from arrogances, ignorance, selfish, myopia mindset, heck care, reckless, stupidity, zero sum game towards life (i govt win, you peasant lose.) etc.

so in order change the behavior of the people, one have to change their mindset. and its no easy task when the people are under the lead, care, charge of a authoritarian govt, with so much influence, and power in this country, mindset of which are arrogant, ignorant, selfish, myopia mindset, heck care, reckless, stupidity, etc.

to change the mindset of the people and thus effectively change their behavior, we need a political revolution.

in short, wanna change people's behavior, u gotta change their mindset and attitude. and it takes huge power, influential power, in order to change a person's mindset and attitude.

This seems to be very pervasive nowadays.

Don't they realise that these are public places and not their own private space? How should we deal with such inconsiderate and selfish people?

It all started with the ministers by example. When they arrived, all the dogs started blocking public path for them and certain public areas were forced closure. Soon every damned sinkies behave like big shot because they thought they are elite, wealthy, educated and the whole world owe them.

JW5,

We are not going to see a significant improvement in the overall situation and in fact, I see the situation as getting from bad to worse every time I get back home.

Do we just surrender the country to these sort of people? Definitely a big NO. It is our duty as a citizen to ensure that at every instance we see these anti-social behaviour we have to point it out to the perpetrator. Your constant posting of this sort of behaviour on this forum is also one of the ways to spread the message across that we owe ourselves this responsibility to minimise this.

It is a long haul effort. We can only hope to slowly win over passive observers to take an active interest in achieving a better Singapore for every citizen.

Counting on the authorities to do this job for us is not an option. Firstly, their only interest is in making money, and secondly, it makes a mockery of ourselves to have this law and that law to ensure that people behave as responsible human beings.
I think that we have to do 2 things:

1. Firstly, if someone displays selfish, inconsiderate or inappropriate behaviour in public, tell them off and report them to the relevant authority, e.g. mrt staff or bus captain. Make the perpetuators embarrassed and insult them if necessary.

2. Secondly, select a few ruling party mps who have shown condescending and arrogant behaviour in the past, and vote them out at the next elections. Remind everyone you know of how the local citizens have been treated and persuade them to vote out the most condescending and arrogant ones. This will ensure more opposition mps, hopefully more accountability and transparency from the government and perhaps the other mps not voted out will all wake up and serve the people.

next time when i see people spitting, i will scream at the person and shout,

"这里不是中国!如果你要吐痰,请回去中国!!"
Be careful that he doesn't kill you and then shout "Do you think China people can be bullied?"

it will not help in changing the ungracious social behavior. suppose jw5 give a good scolding to a student who sit right in front of the bookshelf in the library, blocking people from accessing the books, would the student change his/ her behavior in the future 'cause of jw5's lecture? no.

it is commendable for jw5 or people who go on doing public service by lecturing people who show ungracious social behavior in the public, but it will not revert the trend. the individuals will not change 'cause of jw5 and the lot.
It may not change them, but it will certainly embarrass them and make their day really lousy. Sometimes, that is enough. Little steps my friend, little steps.

You have a point.
Hence, see my post to snr citizen when I stated 2 things that we can do.
Both are equally important, but the second will have a long and lasting impact.

There are about 2 million people from third countries here. They bring their ungracious social habits along with them here. Hence, what you see in public places these days.

How can you blame outsiders? wheras the supposedly world class Singapore, have no class citizens, especailly the 66.6%, & these people lend their support to a political party, which is short of being GRACIOUS!, what do one expect?

You blame the 3rd world countries people, in bringing in their kind of behaviour?

1. I agree with you on the part about telling off the perpetuators but I am not too sure of the reporting to authority bit. The reality is, they have shown consistently that they are optimising profit organisations and nothing else. Too many people have tried to make reports to the staff who would only turn a deaf ear to their complaints.

2. I would like that to happen. Perhaps we need more of these MPs to go wash after shaking hands with the public and suddenly find they are no longer MPs in the next election.

Seriously, pointing out the failures and accompanying arrogance of the Division 1/A-team to our fellow citizens should always be an on-going process. This must be enhanced with an explanation of the damage they are doing to our country (which, incidentally, does not belong to the PAP, much less one family), and to the people and future generations.

1. Not all the employees of govertment linked organizations or large organizations turn a deaf ear. Some are very responsible people who try their best to do their jobs well. I have encountered some very responsible people in the mrt stations, bus interchanges including bus captains, food courts, shopping malls, government departments, libraries, etc. Of course, there are also the bo chap, just want to go through the motions and collect salary types.

2. I think those arrogant and condescending leaders influence the people in 3 ways:
-- By making some people arrogant and condescending as well (usually the more well off)
-- In not caring for the ordinary peoples' welfare, these people become very frustrated due to over-crowding, worry about finances and welfare, lack of time, space and money, and show imappropriate behaviour as a result.
-- As some people realize that they are being short changed but are too afraid to voice out or take it out on figures of authority, they take out their anger on other common folk in public places.

Very sad.
