KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's police have imposed a country-wide ban on "all activities" linked to controversial Indian preacher Zakir Naik for security reasons.
The order was issued as such events can create a tense atmosphere in the multiracial society of Malaysia, said the police's head of corporate communications Asmawati Ahmad on Tuesday (Aug 20).
“All state police chiefs have been instructed to advise those who may organise programmes involving Zakir to stop holding such events," she said in a statement.
“All activities involving Zakir are banned. This directive took effect on Aug 15."

Naik, who faces charges of money laundering and hate speech in India, has come under fire for comments that pitted Malaysia's ethnic and religious minorities against the predominantly Muslim Malay majority.
The Indian preacher, who has lived in Malaysia for about three years and is a permanent resident, was called up by police on Monday and questioned for 10 hours. He was also questioned for five hours last Friday.
Prior to the announcement of the nationwide ban, Naik had already been banned from multiple states in the country.
The Negeri Sembilan government on Tuesday said its ban was enforced to maintain peace.
“As such, we will not allow Dr Zakir Naik to deliver any lecture in the state, whether openly or behind closed doors,” Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun told reporters.
Naik has apologised for his remarks and insisted he is not a racist. He said his detractors had taken his comments out of context and added "strange fabrications to them".

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin on Monday (Aug 26) took aim at Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman for appearing to extend an olive branch to controversial Indian Islamic preacher Zakir Naik.
This came after Mr Syed Saddiq hosted dinner for the preacher and stirred controversy by calling for those who took offence at Mr Naik’s insensitive remarks about race to “move on” from the issue.
When asked if pictures of the minister with the preacher suggested that the latter was enjoying political protection, Mr Muhyiddin said Mr Syed Saddiq had only represented himself in the matter.
“His actions do not speak for the government or the party. Many have met with Zakir, so it is nothing unusual,” Mr Muhyiddin was quoted as saying by Malay Mail.
“Whatever the case, it will not disrupt the ongoing investigations,” added Mr Muhyiddin, who is also the president of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM). Mr Syed Saddiq is PPBM’s youth chief.
The Malaysian Insight also quoted the home minister as saying: “For me it doesn’t matter; we aren’t bound by their views. We are bound by the rule of law.”

He added: “There are Muslims who want to defend him. True, he is a preacher and a (Muslim) expert, but if he touches on certain (sensitive) matters like what he has (purportedly) done, we cannot allow that.”

Narrated Anas:
Some people from the tribe of `Ukl came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and embraced Islam. The climate of Medina did not suit them, so the Prophet (ﷺ) ordered them to go to the (herd of milch) camels of charity and to drink, their milk and urine (as a medicine). They did so, and after they had recovered from their ailment (became healthy) they turned renegades (reverted from Islam) and killed the shepherd of the camels and took the camels away. The Prophet (ﷺ) sent (some people) in their pursuit and so they were (caught and) brought, and the Prophets ordered that their hands and legs should be cut off and that their eyes should be branded with heated pieces of iron, and that their cut hands and legs should not be cauterized, till they die.
