National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan has been indulging in generous self-praise of late. Soon after giving himself a pat on his back for keeping HDB flats “affordable” in Parliament earlier this week, he now accredits himself for “transforming” Singapore into a “great” place to live.
Speaking during a URA seminar yesterday, Mr Mah quoted a survey conducted by URA which showed 84 percent of the 4,000 residents interviewed here are satisfied with living in Singapore.
The percentage of Singapore citizens interviewed was not revealed, but Mr Mah was quick to claim that the survey is a reflection of the success in the “remaking” of Singapore efforts.
“With more Singaporeans travelling round the world and working across borders, Singapore must still mean something special, as home, to our people. A house is not a home. Simply having a good living environment and first world infrastructure will not create an endearing home,” he was quoted as saying in the Straits Times.
The findings of the URA survey seem to contradict an earlier report by The Economist Unit this year ranking Singapore as the 53th most liveable country in the world behind the likes of Croatia, Romania and Slovenia.
As expected, the news was censored by the state media.
Mr Mah also conveniently ignored that the fact that about 10 – 15 percent of the population live in rental one room flats under deplorable living conditions.
For Mr Mah and other PAP ministers who earn more than one million dollars a year, Singapore is indeed a “great” place to live, work and play in, but not the ordinary Singaporeans who are still struggling to make ends meet.
