london olympics opening is a great success!

i am just referring the mr bean segment, during the whole segment, nothing happen in the stadium except the video clip...

oh just because it is funny, it is a great olympic opening. No. It takes more than that.

mr. bean deserves a whole segment. he's the icon for british humor, and anything less will not give brit humor the focus and attention it represents. it's non-verbal personal touch, and this is something ah tiongs have no clue about. i'm afraid sinkies still have too much ah tiong subconciousness in them. they can't seem to get away from ah tiong comparisons.

Not just the Brits lah. How about Italian, Spanish, Swedes, French, Japanese. It just so happens that a Brit designed an iconic phone which became popular because Jobs chose to meld all the functions together seemlessly. And given Job's prickly pursuit of perfection, who knows how many percent of the final product is from the original designer vs Jobs himself.

I have seen a great many coffee pots, shavers, lamps, furniture that are testament to great design. How about the Italians - the Ferraris or even the old Fiat Cinquecento or good old Angello himself. For Japs how about the much copied Noguchi coffee table. Aiyah too many to list.

It is all about economic progress. When you are a 3rd world nation with war, hunger and strife, people care less about design. When Japs became first world nation in the 80s we saw a whole generation of Jap designers - from architects to fashion. China will have its turn on the industrial design stage; with its own intepretation.

Many forget that in the 60s and 70s Japanese companies were basically knocking off Western products. I remember the progress - wah, made in Japan not good to made in Taiwan no good to now China.

Who knows, tradtional Chinese Courtyard houses might become popular in the US in the next 20 years. Just like how Ellison built himself a Japanese Castle.

no one is challenging that jobs was the over-arching visionary of apple products. he was the boss and driver, and sir jony delivered. jobs had so much respect for ive that he was given much liberty to dream up sleekness. his name was an industry secret for years until jobs' passing. he becomes publicly known during his kbe honoring by the queen. jobs was a zen practitioner, and he like the oracle founder have estates in woodside that resemble zen retreats. larry doesn't have a daimyo castle. the estate is dotted with several sprawling low lying japanese style buildings and gardens. sam and i are simply stating a fact that the lead designer of apple products is a brit.

I really like This Opener then the Chinese's opener, Very creative and very artsy and they definitely added some British humor into the whole mix.

Can't beat the ang mohs when it comes to creativity.

creative , artsy humor does not cover the fact it is badly run, rojak and no one can explain what is the story. the main title is isle of wonder. Can you explain how all the program fit into this title?

Its shows the history of G.B with a bit of propaganda attached to it. I still prefer this opener. Or do i have to be forced to accept your views and say that china is the better one?

True, when china was rich, other cultures copied her compass, gunpowder and explosive devices, paper and printing, and porcelain - which is called "china" even today.

Go back and re read what singveld was saying. He was not forcing you to like the china version he's trying to explain to you that the UK show was poorly executed and the various scenes don't mesh together.

There are some people in this forum, who said the opening ceremony is very well done, british humor , mr bean very funny, i did not find anything in the ceremony that is funny.

But today, i find this very funny, after 1 day, the host country have zero medal. HA HA HA, very funny.

Beijing is the most ROJAK of all, and i've watched every one since 1988.

I was just pointing out that as far as great industrial designers are concerned Brits no comparison to Italian/French/Swedes or even Japanese.

As for the opening ceremony, it is a matter of personal preference. What is great is that Beijing was done by Chinese Zhang Yi Mou and London was Boyles and not some outside creative director. It was local talent not FT.

I was wowed by Beijing because it showed what that nation could do. It was big and mighty but that reflected sign of times - that China has arrived as a big player in the global economy, one that is in ascendancy.

London Olympics was show of Brit influence in entertainment industry (which is really American entertainment) which pales in comparison to the real Brit influence - exploitation of its colonies. They had to skip through - Opium War in China, India and the numerous African/Asian colonies, including North America.

It is call POP CULTURE, and it should not be in the Olympic opening ceremony. It is a mistake to include so much of it.

I agree. Yes, I thought they were creative, always that Brit sense of humour, that ability to laugh at oneself, magical, grand...

5 giant rings over the crowd is a masterpiece of creativity. lighting up the cauldron from over 200 hundred torches (representing each country) is the most memorable.
