  1. Emperor Akihito underwent surgery for prostate cancer in January 14, 2003.
  2. Later in 2011, he was admitted to hospital suffering from pneumonia.
  3. In February 2012, it was announced that the Emperor would be having a coronary examination. He underwent successful heart bypass surgery on 18 February 2012.


Line of succession to the Japanese throne

Prince Tomohito of Mikasa (5 January 1946 – 6 June 2012), a first cousin of Emperor Akihito and formerly sixth in the line of succession to the Japanese throne, died of cancer on 6 June 2012, aged 66.
  1. The Prince was first diagnosed with cancer in 1991, but later went into remission.
  2. He was diagnosed with cancer of the larynx in 2003, and immediately began treatment for it.
  3. In September 2006, he fractured his jaw, which had been weakened by his chemotherapy treatments.
  4. In March 2008, his cancer spread to pharynx, and he underwent surgery. Although attempts were made to save his voice, he subsequently suffered from pneumonia caused by his inability to properly swallow food, and was thereafter only able to speak with the aid of a mechanical larynx.
  5. On 6 June 2012, the Prince died from multiple organ failure at a Tokyo hospital, aged 66. He had been hospitalized for some time, as a result of his multiple cancer diagnosis.
