it was called bo beh kang (no tail swamp) by hokkien and teochew settlers in the 50s and 60s as they used the place for pig and chicken farms. before that in the 30s and 40s, it was still a swamp with attap houses and coconut groves. british prisoners of war were interned there during ww2 as it was known as buller camp. the swamp was cleared by the british in the 50s for a housing estate named after the queen, but it set the model and foundation for the hdb and pap to follow that path of high rise public housing later on. in a way, you're correct to say that the pap cleared the dawson road swamp, as fringes and rest of the area was not fully cleared until the 60s. i used to chase after chickens in the bo beh kang fringes, and thanks to the pap, we can skip bo beh kang and now chase chickens in geylang.
