KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians can now enjoy free satellite television with the launch of a new service by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Provided by Astro, the service, dubbed NJOI, features 18 television channels and 19 radio stations. It can be received by those who purchase an NJOI decoder and satellite dish.
Najib commended the company for reducing the digital gap among Malaysians.

“1Malaysia is not just a philosophy to guide us in building this nation; it will be used to develop products and services that will benefit Malaysians.
“For the good of the rakyat, Insyaallah (God willing), there will be more such products and services to come,” he said at the launch of the service at PPR Cochrane Perkasa yesterday.
Some 50,000 low-income earners listed under the Government's e-Kasih programme will be the first to receive the decoders and satellite dishes donated by Astro under its corporate social responsibility programme (CSR).
The service does not require any monthly subscription fee, and will be available nationwide by the first quarter of next year.
The television channels featured include TV1, TV2, TVi, iView, i130, CCT 4, Bernama TV, and Astro's home-grown channels such as Awani, AEC, Prima, and Vaanavil.
“Starting July next year, we will also enable a menu of add-on programmes for NJOI customers through a pre-paid system,” Astro Malaysia Holdings Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Rohana Rozhan said.
The programme will cost Astro RM100mil in initial investment.

Johor growth corridor surpasses its five-year investment target
PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak yesterday gave a strong endorsement of Iskandar Malaysia, describing it as a “towering achievement” for the country, since its inception five years ago.
He said the development corridor owed much of its success so far to a focused method of development, its location in a high-demand growth region and its complementary role with its neighbour, Singapore.
“The productivity, wisdom and achievement of Iskandar Malaysia prove it is a development corridor that is ahead of the others,” said Najib after attending Iskandar Malaysia’s fifth anniversary celebrations at Puteri Harbour here.
Earlier, Najib took a 30-minute helicopter ride to view the five flagship areas of Iskandar Malaysia.
“I have seen the aerial view of development and I am impressed with the achievement I have seen. This development is something that Malaysians can be proud of.”
Najib said the RM77 billion worth of committed investments in the growth corridor had surpassed its original five-year target of RM47 billion.
Present at the ceremony were Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman, Khazanah Nasional Bhd managing director Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar, former deputy prime minister Tun Musa Hitam, Johor assemblymen and members of parliament.
The growth corridor’s first five years saw successful planning and building of the foundation projects within the five flagship areas of Iskandar Malaysia in southern Johor, which covers 2,217 sq km, three times the size of Singapore.
It includes the city of Johor Baru and the towns of Pontian, Senai, Pasir Gudang and the new administrative capital here.
Najib said these investments included various sectors ranging from education, industry, transport and tourism.
They complemented intangible development initiatives such as the Social Development Fund, to develop local capabilities.
“I believe the only sustainable development path is one that is inclusive and allows everyone to be part of the value creation process.”
Najib said Iskandar Malaysia could mark Johor’s return to its glory days as a major growth centre of the region during the Johor-Riau Empire in the 16th century.
“Today, Iskandar Malaysia stands as a proud symbol of Johor revisiting its historic past.
“Back then, Johor took advantage of its strategic location — situated at the crossroads between two straits, two oceans and two continents — and it succeeded because it was open and pragmatic.”
Najib said the Federal Government was committed to ensuring Iskandar Malaysia became internationally renowned, and stressed that a good working relationship between federal and state governments would be vital in achieving that aim.
Najib also witnessed the official launch of 12 new committed investments during the same event. Twelve documents that represented RM1.73 billion worth of investments were exchanged.
Among them was a RM100 million deal between Multimedia Development Corporation, Iskandar Investment Bhd (IIB) and Frost and Sullivan-MDec to set up a Global Innovation Centre in Medini.
IIB, a subsidiary of government investment arm Khazanah, also sealed deals with DHL to establish a supply-chain centre of excellence. IIB also yesterday formalised its cooperation with the University of Reading and Ra Ta Land Sdn Bhd for separate projects.
Johor Corp, meanwhile inked an agreement with Evyap Sabun Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Kiswire Cord Sdn Bhd and Mopuflex Sdn Bhd.
Multimedia University (MMU), sealed a deal with Iskandar Education Enterprise Sdn Bhd and University of Southern California to introduce a Cinematic Arts Degree at MMU’s new campus at EduCity, here.
UM Land confirmed their joint development with Seri Alam Properties Sdn Bhd-Raffles Campus Pte Ltd, while highway operator PLUS Bhd will undertake a project to install street lighting on the Second Link. Iskandar Malaysia Studios Sdn Bhd also entered into a deal with Universiti Teknologi Mara.
Azman, in his speech, said Iskandar Malaysia had achieved a strong momentum, with the timely delivery of major infrastructure, iconic development and catalyst projects.
“Stemming from traditional and knowledge economies, the opportunities and benefits for the rakyat and businesses in Iskandar Malaysia in the near future are very encouraging. Increased tourists arrivals are expected from 2012 onwards, thousands of students in a thriving education sector, improved public infrastructure, more than 55,000 new jobs, and enhanced safety and security overall.”
The plan for Iskandar Malaysia was put into action in March 2006 and is projected to be completed by 2025.
On another matter, Najib said the ongoing discussions on the Points of Agreement between Malaysia and Singapore would be brought up at his next meeting with his Singaporean counterpart, Lee Hsien Loong. next month.
He said bilateral relations between the two countries had been improving, and that more discussions were on the cards on matters such as improving connectivity between the two nations and iconic projects to be jointly developed by both sides.

A small confession... was having "withdrawal symtoms" while I was away oversea with limited internet access. Guess I'm "addicted" to 'Living in JB'. Reading this forum is a must-do every nite b4 I go to bed. My wife complains that I'm living someone else's dream by reading about others' daily encounters n adventure in JB, while our house is still being built (expected completion Mar 2012). But luckily she understands that this is one of my outlets to de-stress n maintain my sanity. I wonder if any bro/sis here have this "problem". Mayb we can form a JBFA(JB Forum Anonymous)?

SINGAPORE: It appears that more Singaporeans are looking at buying private residential properties in Malaysia according to some real estate agents.
Malaysia-based developer Eastern & Oriental, for instance has seen a 20 per cent increase in enquiries on its project in Penang from home hunters in Singapore.
Fifty-six-year-old retiree Soh Poh Neo has been investing in properties in the US and Singapore for the past 20 years.
Last year, she turned her attention to Malaysia and bought two luxury apartments at Andaman at Quayside condominiums in Penang.
"I don't think I can find this sort of project in Singapore. With the unblocked seafront, you can only find it in Sentosa," she said.
Her apartments won't be completed till 2013, but she said prices have already gone up by over a third.
Apart from attractive prices, Madam Soh said she was also drawn to Penang's economic prospects.
Developer Eastern & Oriental said 30 per cent of the units at Andaman at Quayside have been sold after just two previews.
Currently, a third of the buyers are foreigners with 70 per cent of them from Singapore.
Aileen Han, Singapore country manager for E & O Property Development, said: "Affordability, investor-friendly policies, and the opportunity to own your own freehold property... A lot of them actually come for a long-term purpose."
Market watchers said Kuala Lumpur and Penang are the top property investment destinations in Malaysia.
But they warn that the high-end residential property segment in Asia may remain lacklustre, as investors look to the West for cheaper assets.

Experts said this diversion of funds to the West will affect demand for luxury homes and could weigh on high-end home prices going forward, especially in markets like Singapore, Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong where prices have risen by some 25 per cent in recent years.

SINGAPORE: It appears that more Singaporeans are looking at buying private residential properties in Malaysia according to some real estate agents.
Malaysia-based developer Eastern & Oriental, for instance has seen a 20 per cent increase in enquiries on its project in Penang from home hunters in Singapore.
Fifty-six-year-old retiree Soh Poh Neo has been investing in properties in the US and Singapore for the past 20 years.
Last year, she turned her attention to Malaysia and bought two luxury apartments at Andaman at Quayside condominiums in Penang.
"I don't think I can find this sort of project in Singapore. With the unblocked seafront, you can only find it in Sentosa," she said.
Her apartments won't be completed till 2013, but she said prices have already gone up by over a third.
Apart from attractive prices, Madam Soh said she was also drawn to Penang's economic prospects.
Developer Eastern & Oriental said 30 per cent of the units at Andaman at Quayside have been sold after just two previews.
Currently, a third of the buyers are foreigners with 70 per cent of them from Singapore.
Aileen Han, Singapore country manager for E & O Property Development, said: "Affordability, investor-friendly policies, and the opportunity to own your own freehold property... A lot of them actually come for a long-term purpose."
Market watchers said Kuala Lumpur and Penang are the top property investment destinations in Malaysia.
But they warn that the high-end residential property segment in Asia may remain lacklustre, as investors look to the West for cheaper assets.

Went for the presentation on Khazanah-Temasek project, they will be launching terraces in phrase 1, semi dee followed by bungalows, currently still planning the master plan. Should be launched in September if I remember correctly. It is 99+30 years lease.
Frankly speaking, I'm beginning to get more than a bit concerned with the volume of properties that is coming on-stream in Nusajaya, not to mention IDR...
At current price levels, (>500k minimum for non-Malaysians), it is no longer considered "cheep cheep" and with all these seemingly inexhaustible supply, are the demand and price levels sustainable?

I think the JB prime land is getting more limited, if you bought before 2011 with a long term outlook, it should be safe. We will be able to tell when 2012 comes. Medini is leasehold, and marketed as a wellness village, more so for retirees. Actually Singaporeans are generally starting to accept JB. Look at the positive response when JPO opened, the media and buzz. Let's wait and see Legoland, Temasek, Peter Lim and MRT, Educity, Marlborough developments reponse.
Anyways off topic, if anyone is interested in Andaman, Penang, do let me know as I will be able to secure 10% discount, don't worry, there's no commission or gain for me. Sea view units are circa 1100-1300 psf. FYI, it is not launched yet.
I am not an expect in Penang, so I won't comment on this project.

Hi horizonhills, I believe there is more to be announced as this Medini project is not new. According to them, there will be more surprise announcements in 3rd quarter 2012 relating to this development. The location of this wellness village is as shown. currently, it takes 15 mins drive to reach 2nd link, but they are in the planning stage for an access road that might cut through some of the existing development and shorten total time to 3 mins.
The only Medini land with straits view is the one bought by Sunway, just a small portion with the view of Singapore wetland.
Sunway-Khazanah 12 billion ringgit mixed development in Iskandar:
- Exemption on income tax,
- No bumiputera quota,
- Exemption on low-cost housing requirement,
- Exemption on minimum threshold of foreign purchase.
The 276ha site is earmarked "Zone F" to be part of Medini Living, one of the 4 components of Medini Iskandar, which in turn is one of the 8 signature developments of Nusajaya City. Nusajaya is an integral part of Iskandar Malaysia development plans.
