We have a friend who bought 30 Ramli burgers for his daughter's birthday party. He was caught with it, had to throw it into the same bin and endured a lecture, and .... after 14 days, got a summons for $500 or $800 -can't remember the exact figure - for what he did. NOT a wealthy man who was just trying to reduce his cost of living a little and provide what he could afford for his kid's birthday party. Hard not to get angry and swear.

Pity ur friend. There is actually a pamphlet on wat u can or cannot bring and how much u can bring tax free. I kno fr my younger bro who works in ica. Actually if u r a day tripper u are entitled to $50/pax worth of approved stuff to be brought in tax free. They seldom enforce this tho.

My friend didnt get to buy his house after all :( The owner reneged on the deal. This was after the agent spoke to her, over the phone, to ask if she was agreeable to sell it to them and she replied affirmatively. We then pay a 1% ernest price and the agent issued a receipt. Three days later, on Wednesday evening, the agent called to say the owner is calling off the deal - gave some crap reason that her husband wants to sell to his friend instead.

The agent tried to persuade the seller to proceed with the sale to my friend, offering even to forgo his commission but she adamently refused. Poor agent also, got caught in the middle.

My friend and his wife are terribly disappointed. But, what to do, tomorrow we will be back at JB to look for his house again  According to our banker this is happening so often nowadays, esp with HH, is this true? Anybody had a similar experience? So, dont celebrate yet till the paperwork is done!

i posted earlier on the same experience my friends have recently. The couple was trying to buy a resale in ND..seller last minute pull out...thats why better to avoid resale...waste so much time and effort...end of the day...still nothing.

Was at the 1st link custom. Police officer stopped us and asked my hubby to get out. Asked for ic and driving licence and charged us for beating the red light. My god! There wasn't even any red light. Ask where he saw us beating the red light and he couldn't even answer. Then ask us whether we want to settle on the spot or they escort us to pay. My hubby told him no money. He said Singapore dollars also can, just put the money under our licence ad pass it to him. What the &$%^3.... We refuse to cooperate. He finally issued us a summon instead. But we did nothing wrong and refused to sign on the line for him. He pushed it into hubby's hand and lefted.

For this we had to go to MPJB to pay rm300. What to do? People up there are trying so hard to bring up Iskandar Malaysia's image but this officers are so corrupted!

I once brought back to SG a packet of frozen minced beef and was caught by the customs at 2d link. before i had to throw away, the officer on duty was courteous to listen to me explaining that the packet was bought at NTUC and it was an Australian produce. She checked the unopened packet, saw the label, and let me continue my journey with the packet.
am sure if it was beef packed in MY, then gotta throw away. Never know how a disease spreads but it is highly risky in a densely packed city..

Sanur: "Hi thanks for the invite. Still unsure if am going in at the time. May I know which parish to u attend. Mine-church of the holy spirit"

Haha, I'm from Holy Spirit too - small world! Then you must remember Fr Ignatius Huan, who preaches at our church some times. He is now the resident priest at Immalculate Conception, JB. We intend to ask him to bless our house when we move in mid next year.

Ya, it's a small world n limited priest too.

its an irony that visitors see these faces at the first point of entry. if the summon is not signed then holds no water right?
i have thought about such situations before. my take is having a recording device and use it as you are communicating with them. See if these blood suckers back-off.
you're right to never pay off these bas***.

Wow Cathy , you're man !
Was in the same situation like you last month going into SG via 1st link . The Police got hold of my IC / driving licence , going around to check the road tax disc . Asked where I stay ....
I was thinking , WTF dont know what kind of shitty thing going to happen. My mind was already thinking how much should I give to ward off those suckers ... ( BTW I always standby some small RM in case these kind of thing happen )
To my suprise , he say nothing . Just give back driving licence/IC and ask me to go . Wow , heng ah !

Wow rm300, that's alot to pay! Hate it when Sporeans are bullied like that in Msia, they should do something to improve this. In SG, we are so welcoming of foreigners who are tourists and investors.

Hi cathy,

Sorry to hear about this. Sounds like the officer is desperate for some money. But I am glad you did not pay especially in such a public space as the CIQ, it would have been too risky with all eyes and cameras recording. Could have gotten you in even more trouble if you have paid him there. In Malaysia some police have been caught along with the briber when the actions took place.

One option to reduce the fine is to write in to appeal and submit when at the summons counter...

(Someone wrote in this thread few months back, that the police encouraged people to report corruption directly by anonymity. Its efficacy probably untested though...)

Yeah... that explains why resale is not popular... obviously being Asian we do not have the habit of suing the party breaching contract for the fact that you "will not feel comfortable living in this house" if you have to sue someone to complete the transaction.

This is a form of hidden tax for visiting or staying in MY, seriously, don't take it too hard
I have absolutely no faith in the MY police, however, i have not been wrongly charged so far.
There were 2 occassions where they stopped me to spot check... they took passport note down some info... i think this is just a way of showing they do some work hence i am never too apprehensive about them stopping me

I am not surprised at all.

Although we did not come to the stage of issuing deposit, the price moved after we have viewed the place and wanted to discuss the price. The owner just increased the asking price, again giving a lame excuse.

I believe there are some sellers that fish for price just by putting the property in the market.

Of course, not all listing are such.

Wah lau!

I don't remember there is any red light to beat while at the CIQ.

Is he referring to the the red/green light at each custom officer's booth?

I met one agent, when the market is selling at 1.6m, she said the house is actually selling at 1.2m.. I think that is her tactics of getting interested buyers to talk...and then squeezing both the buyers and sellers..

For investors in Iskandar and anywhere else in Johor: www.puterim.com

Pushing bilateral cooperation
INSIGHT DOWN SOUTH BY SEAH CHIANG NEE

Overcrowded and expensive Singapore lacks the space for business and fun, and this is where the Iskandar development in neighbouring Johor can cash in. There is a lot to read, and the details matter. But these are the core items reitereated, in additional four-part harmony: …..
> A tender was opened up for the construction of the Singapore-Johor mass rapid transit or MRT to start operating in 2018.
> A Singaporean billionaire signed a S$2bil (RM4.88bil) deal with the Johor royal family to build a 10ha medical hub and marina city bordering Singapore.
> Southeast Asia’s first premium outlet centre will open next month in south Johor, just an hour’s drive for Singapore’s shopaholics, offering branded products with discounts.
The huge project will be built in stages and will include improved rail, sea and air connections to Singapore (24-hour access) and easier immigration clearance….
