Getting to the bottom of neighbourhood littering
THERE is a lot of littering around my neighbourhood of Chestnut Avenue and Petir Road. This tends to be along the sides of the roads and in open spaces where there are no houses, as well as around areas where construction and renovation take place.
It is especially bad along the section leading to the PUB Waterworks and the open space at the intersection of Chestnut Avenue and Petir Road.
The culprits I suspect are three groups of people: foreign workers; local workers and truck drivers; and pedestrians and bikers.
Foreign workers seem to responsible for much of the litter around construction and road works as there are many empty water bottles, food wrappers and cigarette packets there.
Drivers of the many trucks parked along the section of Chestnut Avenue (where there are no houses) are obviously responsible for the litter there. There also seems to be illegal dumping as television sets and pieces of furniture have been spotted.
Pedestrians and bikers are probably the ones who leave behind tissue paper, sweet wrappers and other similar items.
In spite of anti-littering campaigns, people seem to need reminders about the importance of cleanliness. Besides the National Environment Agency (NEA) and National Parks Board (NParks), other relevant authorities should get companies to teach local and foreign workers not to litter.
Also, who is responsible for the cleaning up of these roads? The NEA, NParks or national water agency PUB? There does not seem to be regular clearing as a lot of the rubbish remains for months on end. I have already written in a few times to our residents' committee about it, but nothing has been done.
