FOR evading $450,000 in duties and tax, the head of a Singapore-based liquor distribution company was fined $2.52 million on Tuesday. Giorgio Ferrari, 39, the managing director of the company bearing his name, pleaded guilty earlier to 10 charges of not declaring excise duty and goods and services tax (GST) on its imports in 2007. Another 178 charges were taken into consideration by District Judge Paul Quan. In imposing the sentence, the judge noted that such offences were serious and should be discouraged. Ferrari had told the authorities that the liquor shipments were bound for diplomatic missions, which under Customs and GST laws are exempted from paying tariffs. But on occasions he made such deliveries without the necessary permits, or not within the validity periods specified on the permits. The Singapore permanent resident, originally from Italy, established his company in 2000, which specialises in labels from prestigious vineyards around the world. The company supplies these to embassies, restaurants, hotels, nightspots as well as supermarkets here. Through his lawyer Shashi Nathan, Ferrari has arranged to settle the fine in instalments over the next 21/2 years. Last month, a parallel car importer was fined $10.8 million for evading customs duty and the GST on vehicles he brought in from Japan.
