I suspect that you are thinking along the lines of a normal political party with a firm ideology and political leader chosen by the party.

Its a party leadership that are wholly coopted and actually despise the party except as an electioneering platform. A few morsels are thrown to party porlumpars such as seat for Tin Pei Ling etc. The first sign of trouble and they will claim they are not party members and will readily walk away. LHL does not need to worry about the country and party, he needs to save his own skin and whats left of his credibility.

But he has no other choice but to think for the party and for the country.
