They have now become so ridiculous that they're claiming that Confucius is Korean, Sun Yat-Sen is Korean, even insisting that Chinese medicine was discovered by the Koreans. One nutcase even claimed that Korean civilization predates the Yellow River and Yangtze civilization, saying that Korean civilization is 6,000 years old!
Needless to say, both Chinese and Western Sinologists, historians, archaeologists and anthropologists are ignoring all these ludicrous claims. These Korean 'experts' propounding all these fantastical historic 'facts' are actually making a laughing stock of their nation in the eyes of academia around the world.

You're right, they're ashamed of their semi-civilized past as a nomadic hunter-gatherer tribe fighting for survival in the harsh wilds of north-east Asia with the Jurgens, Khitans, Monggols and Manchus.
Today, with economic success, the irony is that they have become even more inward-looking and insular. Visitors to Seoul will tell you that the young there live in a world of their own, oblivious to what's going on outside their nation, only pre-occupied with physical appearances and K-pop culture. Everywhere you see girls touching up their make-up and men combing their hair – buses, subway, malls. Every subway station has huge vanity mirrors.
It is a superficial culture where appearances count for everything. When a girl reaches 18, her birthday present would be a nose job. An eye job at 21. Jaw and face job by mid-twenties. Guys are getting in the act too.
Because only superficialities count, truth and substance are cast aside. Hence all the fabrications about the greatness of Korean history and culture: it doesn't matter if it's all BS and not backed by scientific evidence; it's good enough for them that they look good to the rest of the world by bragging that they are best in this, they invented that, blah blah ... boosting their self-image and self-esteem in that process.
