Korean men are brought up in a very male chauvinistic culture, where the man is king. Domestic abuse (with or without alcohol) abounds, and sexism is rife in the workplace. There's a glass ceiling for women, unless Dad owns the chaebol. On the streets groping and bottom-pinching are common, with many women just tolerating it in silence.
Incidentally, Korea is the most Confucianistic nation in the world, with a lot of respect still being paid to the teachings of Confucius and Meng Tze. To know Hanja and to be versed in the Analects is to be cultured, one of my Korean mates told me.
On the other hand, the CCP killed all religions and philosophies, got rid of feudalistic thought, and raised women's status in society (just look at how the women outperform the men in world sporting events). For all its lack of freedom engendered, female empowerment is one of the lasting legacies of the CCP rule.
