VIETNAMESE FANS ATTACKED

<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->I AM writing to express my shock and dismay at the behaviour of Singapore soccer fans during and after the AFF Suzuki Cup semi-final against Vietnam last Sunday at the National Stadium.
I was equally appalled by the lack of security personnel, as well as the inability to control rowdy Singaporean fans. Did the organisers not learn from a similar clash between Singapore supporters with those from Myanmar at the last Tiger Cup? I was seated in the Vietnamese section close to where the Singapore fans sat. It started with a few Singaporean fans poking fun at the Vietnamese, which led to a match-long tit-for-tat between the rival fans. The mood escalated when plastic bottles were thrown by both camps, especially after the Vietnamese team scored what turned out to be the winning goal 15 minutes before the end of the game. But what shocked me was when a glass bottle was thrown into the Vietnamese section, where women and children were present, shortly after the final whistle was blown.
The security personnel were clueless in stopping the escalating violence. They worsened matters by herding the Vietnamese fans out of the stadium smack into the hostile Singapore crowd.
Many of the Vietnamese fans were university students. The waiting crowd threw bags of rubbish at them.
Then, fights broke out. As they were outnumbered, the Vietnamese fans bore the brunt of the kicks and punches. Ambulances had to be summoned.
To witness such ugly behaviour in Singapore, perpetrated by Singaporeans, left me ashamed to be a Singaporean.
