“And Laban said, It must not be so done in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn.”

Genesis 29:26

We do not excuse Laban for his dishonesty, but we scruple not to learn from the custom which he quoted as his excuse. There are some things which must be taken in order, and if we would win the second we must secure the first. The second may be the more lovely in our eyes, but the rule of the heavenly country must stand, and the elder must be married first. For instance, many men desire the beautiful and well-favoured Rachel of joy and peace in believing, but they must first be wedded to the tender-eyed Leah of repentance.

Every one falls in love with happiness, and many would cheerfully serve twice seven years to enjoy it, but according to the rule of the Lord's kingdom, the Leah of real holiness must be beloved of our soul before the Rachel of true happiness can be attained. Heaven stands not first but second, and only by persevering to the end can we win a portion in it. The cross must be carried before the crown can be worn. We must follow our Lord in his humiliation, or we shall never rest with him in glory.

My soul, what sayest thou, art thou so vain as to hope to break through the heavenly rule? Dost thou hope for reward without labour, or honour without toil? Dismiss the idle expectation, and be content to take the ill-favoured things for the sake of the sweet love of Jesus, which will recompense thee for all. In such a spirit, labouring and suffering, thou wilt find bitters grow sweet, and hard things easy. Like Jacob, thy years of service will seem unto thee but a few days for the love thou hast to Jesus; and when the dear hour of the wedding feast shall come, all thy toils shall be as though they had never been—an hour with Jesus will make up for ages of pain and labour.

Jesus, to win thyself so fair,
Thy cross I will with gladness bear:
Since so the rules of heaven ordain,
The first I'll wed the next to gain.

“The Lord's portion is his people.”

Deuteronomy 32:9

How are they his? By his own sovereign choice. He chose them, and set his love upon them. This he did altogether apart from any goodness in them at the time, or any goodness which he foresaw in them. He had mercy on whom he would have mercy, and ordained a chosen company unto eternal life; thus, therefore, are they his by his unconstrained election.

They are not only his by choice, but by purchase. He has bought and paid for them to the utmost farthing, hence about his title there can be no dispute. Not with corruptible things, as with silver and gold, but with the precious blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord's portion has been fully redeemed. There is no mortgage on his estate; no suits can be raised by opposing claimants, the price was paid in open court, and the Church is the Lord's freehold for ever. See the blood-mark upon all the chosen, invisible to human eye, but known to Christ, for “the Lord knoweth them that are his”; he forgetteth none of those whom he has redeemed from among men; he counts the sheep for whom he laid down his life, and remembers well the Church for which he gave himself.

They are also his by conquest. What a battle he had in us before we would be won! How long he laid siege to our hearts! How often he sent us terms of capitulation! but we barred our gates, and fenced our walls against him. Do we not remember that glorious hour when he carried our hearts by storm? When he placed his cross against the wall, and scaled our ramparts, planting on our strongholds the blood-red flag of his omnipotent mercy? Yes, we are, indeed, the conquered captives of his omnipotent love. Thus chosen, purchased, and subdued, the rights of our divine possessor are inalienable: we rejoice that we never can be our own; and we desire, day by day, to do his will, and to show forth his glory.

Deadly Quake

A 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar (Burma) Friday, killing at least 1,600 people and causing widespread devastation.

The quake hit near Mandalay—the country’s second-largest city—collapsing bridges, buildings, and power lines. Myanmar’s ruling military junta, which has restricted foreign aid and internet access since a 2021 coup, issued a rare plea for international help. Rescue teams are using drones, sniffer dogs, and heavy machinery to search for survivors as aftershocks continue; at least 130 remain missing, but rescue efforts are being hampered by damaged roads and the country’s ongoing civil war.

The impact was felt over 800 miles away in neighboring Thailand. At least 17 people died and 100+ remain missing, and multiple construction sites collapsed in Thailand’s capital of Bangkok, including a high-rise caught on a dash cam (see here).

Day of Duties

President Trump is expected to announce sweeping new tariffs today (not yesterday... just to show he ain't foolin').

The details of #47’s plans are unclear, but reports suggest the White House may go one of two directions:

 1. Levy a flat 20% tariff on virtually all imports
 2. Impose country-specific “reciprocal tariffs,” which would match any tariffs other countries have placed on the U.S.

Trump is calling it “Liberation Day,” saying his plan will break America free from unfair trade relationships, bring manufacturing back to the U.S., and raise government revenue to offset proposed cuts to income taxes. Critics say tariffs will make everything more expensive for American consumers, risking high inflation and a recession.

Investors aren’t loving the uncertainty. On Monday, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq both closed out their worst quarters since 2022.

(Mini) Election Day

The Cheese State brought in the big bucks in the race for the bench.

Wisconsin’s Supreme Court election turned into a $90+ million slugfest, making it the most expensive judicial race in U.S. history. Billionaires George Soros and Elon Musk funneled millions into opposing campaigns––Soros for liberal Susan Crawford and Musk for conservative Brad Schimel. Crawford came out on top, claiming a 10-year seat that could determine statewide rulings on abortion, voting laws, unions, and redistricting in the crucial swing state.

Meanwhile, Sunshine State voters headed to the polls yesterday for special elections to fill two congressional seats vacated by former Republican representatives Matt Gaetz and Mike Waltz (now National Security Advisor). Despite Democrats out-fundraising the GOP, Republicans Jimmy Patronis and Randy Fine won the seats.

Tariff Time

President Trump took to the Rose Garden podium on Wednesday afternoon to lay out his Liberation Day tariffs.

What’s in the plan?
Trump declared an economic emergency and announced steeper-than-expected import taxes, including:

 • A baseline tariff of 10% for all countries
 • Higher tariffs for the 60 countries Trump considers the “worst offenders” of imbalanced trade, including 34% for China, 20% for the E.U., and 24% for Japan (see the full list here)
 • A 25% tariff on all foreign-made cars

How were the country-specific tariffs determined?
The White House says the higher “reciprocal tariff rates” are meant to offset each country’s trade policies toward the U.S., accounting for both tariffs and other trade barriers (like regulations) against U.S. goods. However, the formula used is based on each country’s trade deficit (how much it buys vs. sells to the U.S.), sparking criticism that it’s not doing what was intended or advertised.

The White House described its approach as a “kind” way of addressing “unfair” trade imbalances and protecting domestic manufacturing, and could raise $2.2T in revenue by 2034.

What have the responses to the Rose Garden address been?
More thorny than rosy.

World leaders have expressed hope to negotiate new trade deals with Uncle Sam, with some—including China and the E.U.—vowing to take “resolute countermeasures” if negotiations fail. Stateside, critics say the tariffs “pick fights” with allied countries. In a rare move, four Senate Republicans crossed the aisle Wednesday, voting with Democrats to end the national emergency declaration enabling tariffs on Canada (now it heads to the Republican-controlled House).

Stocks, both international and domestic, nosedived (nosedove?). The Dow dropped 1,600 points, the S&P 500 lost 4.8%, and the small-cap benchmark Russell 2000 officially entered a bear market (down 20% from a recent high).

“Men ought always to pray.”

Luke 18:1

If men ought always to pray and not to faint, much more Christian men. Jesus has sent his church into the world on the same errand upon which he himself came, and this mission includes intercession. What if I say that the church is the world's priest? Creation is dumb, but the church is to find a mouth for it. It is the church's high privilege to pray with acceptance. The door of grace is always open for her petitions, and they never return empty-handed. The veil was rent for her, the blood was sprinkled upon the altar for her, God constantly invites her to ask what she wills.

Will she refuse the privilege which angels might envy her? Is she not the bride of Christ? May she not go in unto her King at every hour? Shall she allow the precious privilege to be unused? The church always has need for prayer. There are always some in her midst who are declining, or falling into open sin. There are lambs to be prayed for, that they may be carried in Christ's bosom? the strong, lest they grow presumptuous; and the weak, lest they become despairing. If we kept up prayer-meetings four-and-twenty hours in the day, all the days in the year, we might never be without a special subject for supplication.

Are we ever without the sick and the poor, the afflicted and the wavering? Are we ever without those who seek the conversion of relatives, the reclaiming of back-sliders, or the salvation of the depraved? Nay, with congregations constantly gathering, with ministers always preaching, with millions of sinners lying dead in trespasses and sins; in a country over which the darkness of Romanism is certainly descending; in a world full of idols, cruelties, devilries, if the church doth not pray, how shall she excuse her base neglect of the commission of her loving Lord? Let the church be constant in supplication, let every private believer cast his mite of prayer into the treasury.

Bear Market

Wall Street got mauled last week.

President Trump’s fresh batch of tariffs—and China’s announcement of a 34% retaliatory tariff on all U.S. products—spooked investors. The Nasdaq slipped into bear territory Thursday (meaning it’s down 20% from its peak); the S&P 500 posted its worst week since 2020; and the Dow fell more than 1,500 points on two consecutive days for the first time ever. In total, over $6T in value was lost.

Fed Chairman Powell said the tariffs’ economic impacts will likely be “significantly larger than expected” and cause “at least a temporary rise in inflation.” For now, the Fed is maintaining its wait-and-see approach on interest rates; Trump urged Powell to “stop playing politics” and cut rates immediately.

Meanwhile, the U.S. added a better-than-expected 228,000 jobs in March; unemployment ticked up to 4.2% (from 4.1%).

Demonstrations and Downsizing

Saturday saw mass protests against President Trump and Elon Musk.

Organizers say “millions” attended at least 1,300 protests held across every state. The rallies were part of the “Hands Off” movement—a “nationwide mobilization” against the “brazen power grab” of Trump’s second-term policies and Musk’s government involvement. Sign-laden demonstrators voiced opposition to things like DOGE’s job cuts, the White House’s immigration crackdown, and federal program funding cuts.

Republicans have largely applauded those efforts, which are continuing at a rapid pace.

Last week, the Trump administration threatened federal funding for Harvard and Brown Universities over allegations of antisemitism, and cut more federal jobs: the IRS began laying off 25% of its 100,000-person workforce, and President Trump fired the top two officials at the National Security Agency.

RE: Tariffs

Tariffs remain the talk of the town.

President Trump’s country-specific tariffs went into effect at 12:01 a.m. today (adding to the baseline 10% tariff he levied on nearly every country on Saturday). The White House says over 70 countries have reached out to negotiate deals, and Trump has directed his team to make “tailor-made” deals with each one. So far, he’s rejected “zero-for-zero” tariff offers from the E.U. and Vietnam, saying both exploit the U.S. through non-tariff trade rules.

Yesterday, President Trump levied an additional 50% tariff on China (bringing the total to 104%, meaning anything with a Made-in-China sticker could cost more than double) after it vowed to “fight to the end.”

Some in Trump’s circle—including Elon Musk and some congressional Republicans—have begun to urge #47 to reverse course. Others say they’re trusting the process.

Israeli PM Netanyahu and President Trump put their heads together at Pennsylvania Ave on Monday.

The allies discussed the war in Gaza, including how to return the remaining 59 Hamas-held hostages and Trump’s “bold vision” for a post-war Gaza (relocating Palestinians as the area is rebuilt under U.S. control).

Trade was also on the discussion table. Uncle Sam hit Israel with a 17% tariff last week, but Netanyahu promised to be “a model for many countries” by eliminating the trade deficit with the U.S.

During the visit, Trump announced that “direct talks with Iran” over its nuclear ambitions will begin this Saturday. The president said Tehran “can’t have a nuclear weapon,” and if talks don’t go well, Iran will “be in great danger.” Iran confirmed the meeting, but said Saturday would only be “indirect high-level talks.”

Decisions, Decisions

The High Court is doing some checking and balancing this week.

The Supreme Court voted 5-4 to allow the Trump admin to deport Venezuelan nationals under the Alien Enemies Act—with a few changes. While the 1798 wartime law allows foreign citizens to be deported without a hearing, the Supremes ruled detainees must receive notice and be given time to challenge their deportation.

Separately, Chief Justice Roberts temporarily blocked a deadline for the Trump admin to return a mistakenly deported man. The DOJ argued the district judge who set the deadline overstepped her authority and claims they have no way to return the man—who is from El Salvador but was living in Maryland with protected legal status.

Meanwhile, yesterday, SCOTUS allowed the Trump admin to terminate 16,000 probationary federal workers, rescinding a lower court’s order.

Nightclub Collapse

The roof of the iconic Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, collapsed early Tuesday, killing at least 218 people and injuring more than 200 others.

Former MLB players Octavio Dotel and Tony Blanco were among those killed. The collapse happened while merengue singer Rubby Pérez was mid-performance; he was killed along with his band’s saxophone player. A video posted online shows parts of the roof falling moments before the full collapse.

Rescue crews used dogs and thermal cameras to search for victims, pulling more than 180 survivors from the rubble. Officials say it’s too early to determine what caused the collapse, and that it’s unclear when Jet Set was last inspected. The Dominican government said it would launch a full investigation once the recovery phase ends and all victims have been accounted for.

Tariff Tango

The weekend brought more tariff whiplash.

Friday, markets closed out a historically wild week on a high note. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq climbed, and the Dow jumped 619 points following news that President Trump was “optimistic” about a trade deal with China.

China, apparently, didn’t get the memo. On Saturday, it hiked its retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods from 84% to 125% while noting it was done with tit-for-tat raises, calling anything above 125% a “joke.” Sunday, China’s commerce ministry called on the U.S. to “correct its mistakes” and “return to the right path of mutual respect.

Meanwhile, Trump announced tariff exemptions for smartphones, computers, and other tech components (think: hard drives, semiconductors, memory chips). Big Tech exhaled a sigh of relief… which was cut short when officials suggested the reprieve would be short-lived.

Verse to consider whether you’re negotiating with a foreign leader, a difficult coworker, or an overly tired toddler… “Seek peace and pursue it. The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry for help.”

“I will cut off them that worship and that swear by the Lord, and that swear by Malcham.”

Zephaniah 1:5

Such persons thought themselves safe because they were with both parties: they went with the followers of Jehovah, and bowed at the same time to Malcham. But duplicity is abominable with God, and hypocrisy his soul hateth. The idolater who distinctly gives himself to his false god, has one sin less than he who brings his polluted and detestable sacrifice unto the temple of the Lord, while his heart is with the world and the sins thereof.

To hold with the hare and run with the hounds, is a dastard's policy. In the common matters of daily life, a double- minded man is despised, but in religion he is loathsome to the last degree. The penalty pronounced in the verse before us is terrible, but it is well deserved; for how should divine justice spare the sinner, who knows the right, approves it, and professes to follow it, and all the while loves the evil, and gives it dominion in his heart?

My soul, search thyself this morning, and see whether thou art guilty of double-dealing. Thou professest to be a follower of Jesus — dost thou truly love him? Is thy heart right with God? Art thou of the family of old Father Honest, or art thou a relative of Mr. By-ends? A name to live is of little value if I be indeed dead in trespasses and sins. To have one foot on the land of truth, and another on the sea of falsehood, will involve a terrible fall and a total ruin.

Christ will be all or nothing. God fills the whole universe, and hence there is no room for another god; if, then, he reigns in my heart, there will be no space for another reigning power. Do I rest alone on Jesus crucified, and live alone for him? Is it my desire to do so? Is my heart set upon so doing? If so, blessed be the mighty grace which has led me to salvation; and if not so, O Lord, pardon my sad offence, and unite my heart to fear thy name.

The world’s top semiconductor company announced it will manufacture some of its AI supercomputers on Uncle Sam’s turf for the first time. Nvidia plans to build, test, and package up to $500B worth of AI hardware stateside over the next four years. Production is already underway in Arizona, with Texas next.

The White House called the move “the Trump Effect in action,” citing President Trump’s sweeping tariffs aimed at boosting U.S. manufacturing.

The chipmaker appears to be reading between the tariffs: the move comes as the Commerce Department launched a national security investigation into foreign-made chips and electronics.
