How Can You Tame The Tongue?

I believe the tongue is the hardest member of the human body to control, so how do you tame the tongue?

Bridling the Tongue
The Book of James has been called one of the books of wisdom in the Bible, and in this book, James writes about the tongue. It may be one of the smallest members of the human body, but I believe it’s one of the hardest to control. I don’t mean controlling it in constructing sounds, but when we use the tongue, it can be a double-edged sword. It can heal, but it can hurt. It can bless, and it can curse. James wrote that “If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless” (James 1:26). Jesus said our words reveal what’s in our heart, saying “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person” (Mark 7:20-23).
“the tongue is a fire…and set on fire by hell” (James 3:6).

Duplicity
Our tongue matters a lot, particularly to God, because He knows that “With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God” (James 3:9), and “From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so” (James 3:9-10). One moment we speak well of someone, perhaps in their presence, but with that same tongue we can quickly gossip about that same person, so we’re instructed, don’t be “rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few” (Eccl 5:2). The fewer words that are spoken, the less chance there is for offense.

Watching the Tongue
James wrote that “we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body” (James 3:2), and all God’s people said, “Amen!” Seagoing ships are typically huge, but even “though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs” (James 3:4). In similar fashion, “So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things” (James 3:5a). With one little word, we can see “How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire” (James 3:5b)! One word can start a war. One word can cause someone to commit suicide. One word from a false witness can sentence someone to life in prison, so clearly, “the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness.

The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell”
(James 3:6). It is “From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so” (James 3:10). Should blessing and cursing come from the same mouth? “Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water” (James 3:12). We have managed to tame “every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature” (James 3:7), but “no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison” (James 3:8). Not very flattering, but it is true nonetheless.

Praising God
God will bless the one “who does not slander with his tongue and does no evil to his neighbor, nor takes up a reproach against his friend” (Psalm 15:3), but it is not easy to “Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit” (Psalm 34:13). David knew this would be a struggle, and so he wrote, “I will guard my ways, that I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle, so long as the wicked are in my presence” (Psalm 39:1). That means David made a conscience effort to guard his tongue. One way to guard the tongue is to sing praises to God with it. The psalmist wrote, “My tongue will sing of your word, for all your commandments are right” (Psalm 119:72). Now that’s the proper use of the tongue, so a great way to guide the tongue is to bless and praise God with it. That way, you’ll be so busying blessing God and others that you won’t have time to speak with evil lips, and that might keep you “from speaking deceit.”

Our Deceitful Tongue
Having trouble controlling the tongue? Welcome to the club. I know God hates a “lying tongue” (Prov 6:17), but “The tongue of the righteous is choice silver” (Prov 10:20). Think before you speak is good advice that I don’t always follow, but if we think about the impact and meaning of our words before we speak them, we’ll have an easier time controlling the tongue. If we do not try to control the tongue, the tongue will control us. Ask God for help, and pray, “Deliver me, O Lord, from lying lips, from a deceitful tongue” (Psalm 120:2). I believe He will answer that prayer.

We cannot do anything without Christ (John 15:5), and anything we can do of significance must be done through Christ (Phil 4:13), but truly, the tongue can bring death, but it can also bring eternal life. One way the tongue can bring life is by introducing people to Jesus Christ, and telling them why they need the Savior. We must use our tongue to reveal the fact that Jesus Christ requires that we repent and believe in Him (Mark 1:14-15).

Conclusion
We must read His Word, knowing every Word of God is truth, so if we are singing praises to God; if we are busying blessing others and God; and if we are reading God’s Word and asking for His help, I believe we can at least control the tongue to a certain extent. No one can completely control the tongue, but we can strive to filter our words through our mind before we release them. The tongue will still have its moments, but at least we can think before we speak, because words matter, and words cannot be taken back once their out.

and he delighteth in his way.
Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down:

“But the firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb: and if thou redeem him not, then shalt thou break his neck.”

Exodus 34:20

Every firstborn creature must be the Lord's, but since the ass was unclean, it could not be presented in sacrifice. What then? Should it be allowed to go free from the universal law? By no means. God admits of no exceptions. The ass is his due, but he will not accept it; he will not abate the claim, but yet he cannot be pleased with the victim. No way of escape remained but redemption — the creature must be saved by the substitution of a lamb in its place; or if not redeemed, it must die.

My soul, here is a lesson for thee. That unclean animal is thyself; thou art justly the property of the Lord who made thee and preserves thee, but thou art so sinful that God will not, cannot, accept thee; and it has come to this, the Lamb of God must stand in thy stead, or thou must die eternally. Let all the world know of thy gratitude to that spotless Lamb who has already bled for thee, and so redeemed thee from the fatal curse of the law. Must it not sometimes have been a question with the Israelite which should die, the ass or the lamb? Would not the good man pause to estimate and compare? Assuredly there was no comparison between the value of the soul of man and the life of the Lord Jesus, and yet the Lamb dies, and man the ass is spared.

My soul, admire the boundless love of God to thee and others of the human race. Worms are bought with the blood of the Son of the Highest! Dust and ashes redeemed with a price far above silver and gold! What a doom had been mine had not plenteous redemption been found! The breaking of the neck of the ass was but a momentary penalty, but who shall measure the wrath to come to which no limit can be imagined? Inestimably dear is the glorious Lamb who has redeemed us from such a doom.

“With thee is the fountain of life.”

Psalm 36:9

There are times in our spiritual experience when human counsel or sympathy, or religious ordinances, fail to comfort or help us. Why does our gracious God permit this? Perhaps it is because we have been living too much without him, and he therefore takes away everything upon which we have been in the habit of depending, that he may drive us to himself. It is a blessed thing to live at the fountain head. While our skin- bottles are full, we are content, like Hagar and Ishmael, to go into the wilderness; but when those are dry, nothing will serve us but “Thou God seest me.”

We are like the prodigal, we love the swine-troughs and forget our Father's house. Remember, we can make swine-troughs and husks even out of the forms of religion; they are blessed things, but we may put them in God's place, and then they are of no value. Anything becomes an idol when it keeps us away from God: even the brazen serpent is to be despised as “Nehushtan,” if we worship it instead of God. The prodigal was never safer than when he was driven to his father's bosom, because he could find sustenance nowhere else. Our Lord favors us with a famine in the land that it may make us seek after himself the more. The best position for a Christian is living wholly and directly on God's grace — still abiding where he stood at first — “Having nothing, and yet possessing all things.”

Let us never for a moment think that our standing is in our sanctification, our mortification, our graces, or our feelings, but know that because Christ offered a full atonement, therefore we are saved; for we are complete in him. Having nothing of our own to trust to, but resting upon the merits of Jesus — his passion and holy life furnish us with the only sure ground of confidence. Beloved, when we are brought to a thirsting condition, we are sure to turn to the fountain of life with eagerness.

Happy Valentine's Day

"My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends."1

Every February, throughout the Western World (at least), romantic greeting cards, flowers, and specially packaged candy are given to our loved one/s as an expression of our love, all in the name of St. Valentine.

And who might St. Valentine be? One legend says that he was a priest in Rome during the third century AD at the time of the Roman Empire and that he may have been thrown into prison and killed for helping Christians escape the cruelty of Roman prisons where Christian prisoners were beaten and tortured.

According to another legend, "Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl—who may have been his jailor's daughter—who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France."2

If truth be known, there's probably a mixture of validity and make-believe in all of these legends. Nevertheless it's a good thing to show and tell our loved ones how much we love and appreciate them, not only in a romantic way on Valentine's Day, but every day of the year. As Jesus commanded us: "Love one another as I have loved you." That needs to be applied at all times—a big order and a goal we all need to strive towards.

In the words of John Oxenham, "Love ever gives, forgives, outlives, and ever stands with open hands, for while it lives, it gives. For this is love's prerogative—to give, and give, and give."

Suggested prayer: "Dear God, thank you for special days and special ways to show our loved ones how much we love and appreciate them. Please help me to love my loved ones and others as you have loved me every day of the year. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully, in Jesus' name, amen."

“He shall gather the lambs with his arm.”

Isaiah 40:11

Our good Shepherd has in his flock a variety of experiences, some are strong in the Lord, and others are weak in faith, but he is impartial in his care for all his sheep, and the weakest lamb is as dear to him as the most advanced of the flock. Lambs are wont to lag behind, prone to wander, and apt to grow weary, but from all the danger of these infirmities the Shepherd protects them with his arm of power.

He finds new-born souls, like young lambs, ready to perish — he nourishes them till life becomes vigorous; he finds weak minds ready to faint and die—he consoles them and renews their strength. All the little ones he gathers, for it is not the will of our heavenly Father that one of them should perish. What a quick eye he must have to see them all! What a tender heart to care for them all! What a far-reaching and potent arm, to gather them all!

In his lifetime on earth he was a great gatherer of the weaker sort, and now that he dwells in heaven, his loving heart yearns towards the meek and contrite, the timid and feeble, the fearful and fainting here below. How gently did he gather me to himself, to his truth, to his blood, to his love, to his church! With what effectual grace did he compel me to come to himself! Since my first conversion, how frequently has he restored me from my wanderings, and once again folded me within the circle of his everlasting arm!

The best of all is, that he does it all himself personally, not delegating the task of love, but condescending himself to rescue and preserve his most unworthy servant. How shall I love him enough or serve him worthily? I would fain make his name great unto the ends of the earth, but what can my feebleness do for him? Great Shepherd, add to thy mercies this one other, a heart to love thee more truly as I ought.

9 Powerful Bible Verses When Facing A Crisis

When crisis’ come, there is solace in the Scriptures, so here are 10 powerful Bible verses to read when dealing with a crisis.
Common to All
Just about everyone has faced a crisis in their life. In fact, you have either just gone through one, you are going through one now, or it’s just ahead. These crisis’ can be about a divorce, finances, a wayward child, cancer, a lost job, and even the loss of a loved one, so the only thing that stays the same in this life is that we all go through crisis’. Change is not easy to adjust too, but sometimes a crisis can bring about change…in us and in our circumstances, however, there is calm in the storm. People change, but God never does.

Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
God does not have a bad day at the office. He does not get up on the wrong side of the universe. God is constant. Always the same, day after day, and there’s comfort in that. If He has promised eternal life to those who believe in Jesus Christ (John 3:16), then we know He won’t change His mind about it. He won’t regret the free gift of eternal life (Eph 2:8-9) given to His children. Jesus Christ, Who is God, does not change either, even when everything else seems to change in our life. Our crisis does not catch Him off guard.

Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
This is actually a command, but one that’s difficult to obey, particularly when faced with a crisis. We tend to be anxious about everything, but often don’t address it in prayer. We should put all our anxieties in Jesus’ hands. He says we can go to Him and He will give us rest (Matt 11:28-30), so just put everything in His hands by putting “everything in prayer.”

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
The fact that I am in pushing the upper 60’s makes me appreciate the fact that my “self is wasting away,” but also that my “inner self is being renewed day by day.” Our trials or our “momentary affliction” is shaping us into the image of Christ. This “eternal weight” can’t be seen today, but will be visible in the coming kingdom, so Paul would say, “do not lose heart.”

Ecclesiastes 3:1 For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.
One church had to close its doors the other day, but churches are like people. They are born, they live, and they die, and it’s not the end of the world. In fact, a new church plant started just about 5 weeks later, and today it is a small but growing church. Apparently, it was time…a time for a new beginning.

James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
If you hold a lit candle next to a wall and shine a flashlight on it, you’ll notice that the light or the flame does not cast a shadow. That’s because light cannot create shadows…light eliminates them, and “the Father of lights” never changes, so we know there is no “shadow due to change” like there is in us. We change over time. We change our minds like the wind changes directions, but God does not change, shift positions, or change His mind about what sin is.

Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.
Maybe you could substitute “crisis” for “them” and have it read, “Do not fear or be in dread of” this crisis, because God doesn’t leave when a crisis hits. In most cases, He is closer than ever, so when a crisis comes, we can “Be strong and courageous,” knowing God does “not leave” us “or forsake us,” especially in a crisis.

Malachi 3:6 For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.
Why would this verse speak about God not changing in relation to the nation of Israel, and especially saying, the “children of Jacob, are not consumed?” The Bible teaches that God “does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities” (Psalm 103:10), so God does not give Israel what they deserve (judgment) but what they need (mercy). Just as Israel was while in captivity, we too who once “were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy” (1 Pet 2:10). God has sworn by His own name to preserve a remnant for Himself, and so God has not utterly forsaken Israel. It might look like it now, but now is not forever, and some day, they will recognize Jesus as the Messiah, but more importantly, as their Savior.

Isaiah 43:19 Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.
Think about this verse, even though the intended recipient is the nation of Israel, God does a new thing in us too. For example, “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come” (2 Cor 5:17), and God did “make a way” in our spiritual wilderness by drawing us to Himself through Christ (John 6:44), and we are now seen as having Jesus’ own righteousness (2 Cor 5:21). That’s about as new as it gets… becoming a new creation in Christ. Crisis’ can change us more into the image of Christ because we are driven to more dependence upon Christ, and that’s good because we could do nothing without Him (John 15:5).

Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Even though this was written to the exiles in Babylon, this is still true for the believer. This verse was not written to us, but it’s helpful for us, because it refers to the nature of God. We have a hope in Christ and in a coming kingdom, and until that time, we can remind ourselves that Jesus says, “I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matt 28:20). That is a permanent abiding (John 15:1-8), where Christ comes to dwell in us, and we in Him.

Conclusion
There are dozens more Bible verses that I could have included that can help you deal with a crisis, or prepare for the one that’s coming. It’s like I said; you’re either in a crisis, coming out of a crisis, or preparing to go into one, and so tuck these Bible verses away for the day when a crisis comes, or one comes for your friend or family member. You can take God at His Word, that “He will not leave you or forsake you,” even if you forsake Him for a season.

I know that my Redeemer lives
Why should you believe in Christ Jesus as Your Savior and Lord?

I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man. "Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out--those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned

John 5:25-29 NIV

“Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice.”

1 Samuel 15:22

Saul had been commanded to slay utterly all the Amalekites and their cattle. Instead of doing so, he preserved the king, and suffered his people to take the best of the oxen and of the sheep. When called to account for this, he declared that he did it with a view of offering sacrifice to God; but Samuel met him at once with the assurance that sacrifices were no excuse for an act of direct rebellion. The sentence before us is worthy to be printed in letters of gold, and to be hung up before the eyes of the present idolatrous generation, who are very fond of the fineries of will-worship, but utterly neglect the laws of God.

Be it ever in your remembrance, that to keep strictly in the path of your Savior's command is better than any outward form of religion; and to hearken to his precept with an attentive ear is better than to bring the fat of rams, or any other precious thing to lay upon his altar. If you are failing to keep the least of Christ's commands to his disciples, I pray you be disobedient no longer. All the pretensions you make of attachment to your Master, and all the devout actions which you may perform, are no recompense for disobedience. “To obey,” even in the slightest and smallest thing, “is better than sacrifice,” however pompous.

Talk not of Gregorian chants, sumptuous robes, incense, and banners; the first thing which God requires of his child is obedience; and though you should give your body to be burned, and all your goods to feed the poor, yet if you do not hearken to the Lord's precepts, all your formalities shall profit you nothing. It is a blessed thing to be teachable as a little child, but it is a much more blessed thing when one has been taught the lesson, to carry it out to the letter. How many adorn their temples and decorate their priests, but refuse to obey the word of the Lord! My soul, come not thou into their secret.

The Empty Egg
==============

Eight-year-old Steven was mentally retarded and had many
health problems. His health appeared to be growing worse ever
daily. His teacher was concerned his classmates might stop
identifying with him and loving him as they became more aware
of his differences.

In April, the teacher asked the class to put together one
plastic Easter egg filled with a small object representing new
life in the Spring. Thinking Steven might not understand (and
not wanting to embarrass him), the teacher had each child
place their egg on her desk so that she could open each one
individually. She needn't have worried.

The first egg contained a tiny wild flower, which truly was an
indication of new life.

Next, came a rock and the teacher assumed the rock was
Steven's. Her reasoning was that rocks don't symbolize new
life and growth. But a little boy shouted from the back of the
room that the rock had moss on it, thereby showing new life.
The teacher agreed.

A butterfly flew out of the next egg and the little girl that
brought it bragged that the butterfly was hers, and how it had
came from a cocoon, symbolizing new life. The teacher agreed
again.

The fourth egg was empty. The teacher knew this had to be
Steven's egg, and she nervously set it aside, hoping he
wouldn't notice.

As she began to pick up a different egg, Steven excitedly
announced that the empty egg was his! Hesitating, the teacher
replied, "But it's empty!"

"That's right," said Steven. "Just like Jesus' tomb was, and
that means new life for everyone!" The teacher was amazed at
Steven's insight and his love for Jesus.

Later on, at the end of the school year, Steven's condition
worsened and he died.

At his funeral, the children from his class each placed an
empty Easter egg among the flowers. Many of the adults at
Steven's funeral were puzzled by the appearance of all the
eggs, and the message Steven shared with his classmates was
shared again!

An empty tomb some two thousand years earlier gave Steven the
hope of a new life! Although the flowers were beautiful, it
was the empty eggs that shared the message of hope in Eternal
Life through Jesus Christ!

What a wonderful message to share this Easter with those you
love.

"Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not
here; He is risen!"? Luke 24:5 NIV

Blessed are those who love His appearing
Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him! For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!

For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:9-10,17 NIV

This is evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be made worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering-- and to grant rest with us to you who are afflicted, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, when he comes on that day to be glorified in his saints, and to be marveled at in all who have believed, because our testimony to you was believed. So that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

“God, my maker, who giveth songs in the night.”

Job 35:10

Any man can sing in the day. When the cup is full, man draws inspiration from it. When wealth rolls in abundance around him, any man can praise the God who gives a plenteous harvest or sends home a loaded argosy. It is easy enough for an Aeolian harp to whisper music when the winds blow — the difficulty is for music to swell forth when no wind is stirring. It is easy to sing when we can read the notes by daylight; but he is skilful who sings when there is not a ray of light to read by — who sings from his heart.

No man can make a song in the night of himself; he may attempt it, but he will find that a song in the night must be divinely inspired. Let all things go well, I can weave songs, fashioning them wherever I go out of the flowers that grow upon my path; but put me in a desert, where no green thing grows, and wherewith shall I frame a hymn of praise to God? How shall a mortal man make a crown for the Lord where no jewels are? Let but this voice be clear, and this body full of health, and I can sing God's praise: silence my tongue, lay me upon the bed of languishing, and how shall I then chant God's high praises, unless he himself give me the song? No, it is not in man's power to sing when all is adverse, unless an altar-coal shall touch his lip.

It was a divine song, which Habakkuk sang, when in the night he said, “Although the fig-tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labor of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation.” Then, since our Maker gives songs in the night, let us wait upon him for the music. O thou chief musician, let us not remain songless because affliction is upon us, but tune thou our lips to the melody of thanksgiving.

What The Bible Says About The Children Of God

The Bible has a lot to say about the children of God, and it’s totally encouraging.
Become Like Children
When Jesus was speaking to the disciples, they had just been arguing who would be the greatest in the kingdom, but Jesus told them who would actually be the greatest. He said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matt 18:3), and so, “Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven” (Matt 18:4). When the disciples tried to keep children away from Jesus, meaning they wanted to see Him, He was not happy. He rebuked them for that, saying, (Matt 19:14). Do not prevent children from coming to Christ if it is their idea, but it must be their idea and not ours. Jesus never forced Himself on anyone and neither should we. Jesus never crammed religions down anyone’s throat because He came to give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45).

Milk to Meat
When Jesus said that we must be like children, He was more specific than that. We must become as little children, meaning small, humble, and teachable. My own children and grandchildren are like sponges. They soak up things faster than we realize, so when a person is born again, or born from above (John 3:3-8), they begin feeding on the milk of the word, or the basic elements of the faith (Rom 10:9-13; 1 Cor 15:1-4). Later, they are ready for more spiritual meat.

Even though Paul said they should have been teachers by now, they will still in the elementary things and had not grown in the grace and knowledge of our Lord as they (and we) were instructed (2 Pet 3:18), and as the author of Hebrews writes, “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child” (Heb 5:12-13). The Apostle Paul chastised the Church at Corinth by writing, “I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready” (1 Cor 3:2). They were not being child-like but childish (1 Cor 3:3). One thing about children…they grow, and if they don’t, something’s wrong. Believers should grow too. Whatever is not growing is dying.

God Acted First
No one can come to Jesus Christ unless the Father has drawn Him (John 6:44), so it is true that we “were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God” (John 1:13), and then “to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12). Just as a child has no choice or control over when or where they were born, neither do we have that choice. When God grants us repentance (Acts 5:31, 11:18; 2 Tim 2:25), and we put our trust in Christ, we have the right to be called the children of God. It was God Who acted first, and loved us before we ever loved Him (1 John 4:10, 19), just as He did Israel while still under Egyptian bondage. To have the right to be called a child of God requires that we have the righteousness of God, and that happens when we trust in Christ. Paul wrote that it was “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Cor 5:21).

Inheritance Rights
In Paul’s humble way, he spoke of the riches that are found in Christ, writing, “To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ” (Eph 3:8), so what are these unsearchable riches? It is the heritage of being a child of God, and we know that “The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son” (Rev 21:7). The riches include the gospel itself, hidden through many ages, but now revealed for us and for our children to know. The unsurpassed riches of having the wrath of God removed, and now being at peace with God since the former condemnation has been lifted (Rom 5:1, 8:1).

Now we await the day when God “will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away” (Rev 21:4). Even greater will be the fact that “the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God” (Rev 21:3), and believers, for the very first time, “will see his face” (Rev 22:4).

Conclusion
Paul made it clear that we can know if we are a child of God. He wrote, “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God” (Rom 8:14). That means “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God” (Rom8:16), so you and I “have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father” (Rom 8:15)! That means if you are a child of God, then you too are “heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him” (Rom 8:17). God made a sovereign act of the will by saving us, so “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are” (1 John 3:1a)?

He will raise us up on the last day
And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day." Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day

John 6:39,40, and 54 NIV

For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked.

For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life.

2 Corinthians 5:1-4 KJV

If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh -- for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

“Keep not back.”

Isaiah 43:6

Although this message was sent to the south, and referred to the seed of Israel, it may profitably be a summons to ourselves. Backward we are naturally to all good things, and it is a lesson of grace to learn to go forward in the ways of God. Reader, are you unconverted, but do you desire to trust in the Lord Jesus? Then keep not back. Love invites you, the promises secure you success, the precious blood prepares the way. Let not sins or fears hinder you, but come to Jesus just as you are. Do you long to pray? Would you pour out your heart before the Lord? Keep not back. The mercy-seat is prepared for such as need mercy; a sinner's cries will prevail with God. You are invited, nay, you are commanded to pray, come therefore with boldness to the throne of grace.

Dear friend, are you already saved? Then keep not back from union with the Lord's people. Neglect not the ordinances of baptism and the Lord's Supper. You may be of a timid disposition, but you must strive against it, lest it lead you into disobedience. There is a sweet promise made to those who confess Christ—by no means miss it, lest you come under the condemnation of those who deny him. If you have talents keep not back from using them. Hoard not your wealth, waste not your time; let not your abilities rust or your influence be unused.

Jesus kept not back, imitate him by being foremost in self-denials and self-sacrifices. Keep not back from close communion with God, from boldly appropriating covenant blessings, from advancing in the divine life, from prying into the precious mysteries of the love of Christ. Neither, beloved friend, be guilty of keeping others back by your coldness, harshness, or suspicions. For Jesus’ sake go forward yourself, and encourage others to do the like. Hell and the leaguered bands of superstition and infidelity are forward to the fight. O soldiers of the cross, keep not back!
