JB/SG Crimewatch

Re: JB Crimewatch

Here's an excerpt from an article in today's Star which quoted a JB resident's take on crime in his area. The subject of article (http://www.starproperty.my/index.php/property-news/pasir-gudang-a-thriving-township/) is actually about how Pasir Gudang is thriving, although I couldn't help but read it with a slight pinch of salt as it appeared to be written with an electioneering slant, so you judge for yourself :)

Permas Jaya resident Danny Oi, 50, said he was also happy with the changes that have transpired in the area especially in the last couple of years.

“We have several new roads that have opened up in Permas Jaya which is very convenient for residents here.

I have also noticed a significant improvement in police patrols and a reduction in the crime rate,” he said addiing that he was however still cautious about snatch thefts as he was once a victim himself.

The infrastructure has improved. Crime rate with some recent news about shooting and robbery makes me a bit cautious.

Re: JB Crimewatch

Cannot be. If you have noted, Sin Chew Daily for example even has addresses and photos and even injuries of the victims. I dont think they are so bo-liao like Singapore press to come up with fake characters.

I bet for every 1 crime that come to light, at least 5 are not reported.
Knowing police will not do much to help, victims may choose to swallow their sorrow quietly.

If ALL victims of crimes report it then the statistics will not be easily "massaged"! Even if the police do nothing much initially, the sheer volume and pressure of crime statistics will galvanize the Powers to be to do someting or face public wrath..... The TRUE picture becomes evident and with it public outcry for more effective Police policing will have to be stepped up. A matter of Chicken and Egg IMHO.

Re: JB Crimewatch

I recalled there was one case where one guy was waiting for transport to work early morning when he was forced into a van, beaten up and then throw out of the van in the middle of nowhere. He then went to report police but the police told him to go to the nearest station where he was abducted.

Hi,

My wife sister has been robbed twice and her husband was robbed while waiting at a traffic light at 4am one morning while on his way to Singapore for work. He was one of the 4 or 5 who were robbed and bashed during that period of time and it was widely reported in the press. It happened 3 years ago.

Hi,

He was robbed and slashed about 7 years ago. My grandma was victim of snatch theft twice in Muar and Tangkak in a space of 5 years.

The list goes on and on. Your family must be damn lucky not to to victims of crimes. Its in the news reports every other day. I didnt make the crimes up, unless the Sin Chew daily make the crimes up daily.

I am a full time investor now and my intention is to get people to be aware of their surroundings. Dont ask me where I belong. When I was a young boy, life was good in my kampong. When I returned to my kampong last week, it has developed but relatives have advised me to park my car inside their car pouch instead

I am sure your car would be safe in a POUCH......strange you come out with a long list only now.........some more more sensational ones........

So far my trips to Malyasia has been uneventfull and I crossed my fingers it continues like that. A number of friends and relatives in Malaysia do encounter crime vs none in Singapore. But then again where as in the world is safer than Singapore? It is good to share stories here so that we can learn and be wary.
A few years back a relative in KL was selling their car. A potential buyer came, asked for a test drive. Once he drove to a small lane, he took out a knife and ask my relative to get out.
In general they are all cautious of smash n grap crime and constantly remind me to remove all items in the car and not to carry a laptop as well.

I think the window film on the window did offer some protection as it did not shatter completely but the attacker had to repeatedly smash the window with his axe.

I think a good security window film would hinder and delay an attacker. If the security film can withstand an attack for 10 - 30 seconds or more it may offer the victim enough time to try to drive away. Too bad the driver was blocked by another car in this case.

I am thinking of installing these security window film , but I think stupid LTA will not approve leh . Check already only available in 50% transparency , front windows will not pass inspection .

There are clearer ones...
VKool Secure (8mil) 70% Transmission
Raytech (6mil) 70% Transmission

There should be others....:D

Apart from window film, i wonder if there are shatter-proof glass windows available on the market as an option, given the obvious need for such items :)

Re: JB Crimewatch

Its always good to face up the reality instead of living in ones own fantasy. Thats how we all make money and investments. I love Malaysia as I was made in Malaysia. But many young people that I spoke to are running away from the problems. They thought that they vote for the opposition and Malaysia will suddenly become a safe place to stay in.

Who is living in a fantasy....did I deny that crime do not happened in JB?....and now you are saying people are running away from problems.....and about voting for opposition....you sound contradictory......you are not running also?.....you sounded like you were....

Actually I think Pepper spray should be part of our self defense kit. Too bad it is banned in SG. :(

Women carrying larger pepper sprays can help defend attacks says Malaysian Police

07/07/2012

Handy tool: De Run demonstrating a pepper spray fog.
PETALING JAYA: Size does matter at least when it comes to pepper sprays that can help women fend off assailants, said Kuala Lumpur CID chief Datuk Ku Chin Wah.

He said many women were carrying pepper sprays nowadays as a form of protection and these could help in the event of multiple assailants.

However, Ku warned that it was an offence to use a pepper spray on anyone for reasons other than self-defence.

“There's no harm in carrying them. That's the least women can do to protect themselves from harm,” he said in an interview.

Handy tool: De Run demonstrating a pepper spray fog. Security product expert Edmund De Run, whose company has been providing security products to local law enforcement authorities for years, advised women to buy larger canisters as they could be attacked by multiple assailants.

“What if you are confronted with half a dozen guys? Assailants always have backup,” he said.

De Run said there were many pepper sprays in the market, some of which were the size of a tiny keychain.

He pointed out that women could be in even more danger should they run out of spray or fail to incapacitate their attackers.

De Run also stressed that women should hold their pepper sprays in hand during a potentially dangerous situation, such as when they were walking to their cars.

“Pepper spray is also useful at home. You can place it in a set area, where you can easily grab it should you hear suspicious sounds at night,” he advised.

His company began selling pepper spray fogs to the public in 2004 after receiving approval from the authorities.

He said the spray, imported from South Africa, was used by the police force there as well as those who needed to repel lions.

De Run said the spray, which comes in 60ml and 45ml canisters, could shoot out the burning fog at a range of up to four metres.

Once hit with the spray, which contains pure capsicum, assailants suffer extreme difficulty in breathing, temporary blindness, pain and disorientation.

It is said to be able to incapacitate assailants for around half an hour, but is non-lethal.

De Run said those who wished to buy the spray would have to register with the police database.

However, Ku stressed that the sprays should only be used as a last resort to escape from confrontation.

“I would say that the best form of protection is to run away if you can and as fast as possible,” he advised.
