Opposition SDP unveils two new members

SINGAPORE: The opposition Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) unveiled two new ordinary members at a rally at the Speakers' Corner at Hong Lim Park on Saturday.

When asked if they will contest the next General Elections, they said it was still too early to tell.

One of them is 45-year-old Dr James Gomez, who was a Workers' Party candidate in the 2006 General Election.

Dr Gomez, a Deputy Associate Dean at Australia's Monash University, said he officially became a SDP member on Saturday.

The other new member is Dr Vincent Wijeysingha, executive director of non-governmental organisation, Transient Workers Count Too.

The 40-year-old is the son of former Raffles Institution principal Eugene Wijeysingha.

Dr Vincent Wijeysingha joined the SDP in August.

The party also launched its alternative economic programme called "It's About You".

Among others, the initiative supports the introduction of minimum wage for workers.

Your 1992 version isn't same as mine. What I heard was that the Malay candidate in the team didn't show up on nomination day. Instead SDP, NSP and SJP teams showed up and insisted on a multi-cornered contest. JBJ withdrew with a smile. Though I must say, that time I was in the US. Whatever the reason for the WP/JPBJ withdrawal, with oppositions like that, who needs elections, I remarked to my US friend.

The 'invisible' hand always make its appearance at GEs, eh? The Malay chap who didn't show up should be exposed. I bet he made good money though such a strategy merely confirm my 'invisible' hand theory - that every GE, it will make its presence felt.

Political "liabilities" will always find themselves a platform, even if the SDP is not one or does not provide one.

It will be interesting to send different parties into Parliament. One GRC each for SDP, NSP, WP, SDA and RP. Even SF if they have the resource.

In yr opinion, have you consider GMS as a political liability? If no, why.
