It's about People, not cattle, Prof Lim Chong Yah lambasts Lee Yi Shyan

The problem with these people who complain is, they don't know anything cos they have never done anything for the poor before cos they don't care. They just use the poor to condemn the govt.

granted many are like what you described. But these are people who are probably entrenched in this situation for a long time , received help and became lazy, and started to take assistance for granted. But I am sure there are many who could use a leg up and then improve their lot. They genuinely want to break away from their poverty and are willing to work hard.Should we not help?

I was supposed to be doing social work as the group I was working with came under the umbrella of the "social development" ministry.

However, I was not about to simply dish out goodies without seeing those who I was trying to help put in their share of effort to turn things round. None of them ever did. All they wanted was for me to approve FREE assistance.

Aren't we already helping these people?

Would you like to share what you have done for the poor?

Sam, were you doing social work in Singapore? Didn't sound like it.

in think to some extent we do help in singapore...just a matter of the degree of help rendered. Some may get more help than others...some groups

may get more help than others.

2 weeks later I visited him again. He was still smoking and had not done a single routine that I had mapped out for him to lose weight. He said he needed good walking shoes. I gave him $100 from my own pocket to buy shoes... that was a big mistake.

A month later... still no walking shoes. Turns out he used the money to buy cigs instead.

This is one case. I had many more similar that I experienced first hand. Other social workers that I work with all have similar stories.

It boils down to this :

1) They have no will power.
2) They can't break out of their addictions.
3) They refuse to change their diets or their spending habits.

If I could subject them to military law and put them through boot camp. They'd all come out much better off. The touchy, feely, softly, softly approach does not work. They simply take advantage of the help they get and refuse to make any changes themselves.

I don't mean to belittle the social work you done in NZ, in fact it's commendable of you. But you can't equate the situation in NZ to that of S'pore. The whole world knows that the Maoris or their polynesian cousins elsewhere are people who would never want to work and that they entitled to all handouts as there are the sons of the earth. You can say it's almost in their DNAs. But the poor and needy are not like that at all. Believe me, many of them are holding two jobs, some even three to make ends meet. For most of them, the circumstances they're in were forced among them and it's not their own doing that they are now in such situations. In fact, they feel rather ashamed if they can't find work and you could see their happy faces if there's a job placement opportunity for them. The majority stick on to the jobs that come their way, sure, some will leave, but they are in the very minority, and usually have good reasons to do so. Even for this group, if the alternative opportunity suit their circumstances, they do stay on.

Leongsam, I understand what you are trying to say, But truly, for those of us who are helping in this area, our experience in S'pore is quite different from yours in NZ.

So your one NZ experience (is there any other experience) led you to conclude that they are ALL like that?

It wasn't ONE. It was every loser I had to deal with. I probably handled about 35 cases before I gave up. EVERY SINGLE ONE was the same. I asked my co workers and they had similar stories to tell.

Of course I don't mean you only helped one person, I was referring to your experience in NZ (one country).

Would not dispute your experience or the anecdotal account by your co-workers. But I think it's generalising that every person in poverty has no intention to help themselves.

Unless Singaporeans belong to a different species altogether, I see no reason why sinkies would behave any differently. You have to remember that I lived there for more than 30 years and witnessed first hand what a bunch of layabouts Singaporeans can be too.

Trying to get something for nothing is human nature not Kiwi nature. If you allow the "disadvantaged" to take advantage of handouts, the cycle will start and it's very hard to break once it's entrenched.

A kick in the ass is what they need. It will do them a world of good and they'll thank you for it in due course.

Do not disagree with this.

There will always be people who are poor and lazy. I'm only saying that it's unfair to say every poor person is lazy.
