You heard correctly. It was not a mistake. The whole scheme was meant to penalise the lower income and the middle income if they want to get a car in Singapore. Because the high end car pays higher tax, it was indeed cheaper for them to buy a weekend car and pay for the coupon every day.

I remember hearing something interesting about the weekend car scheme. It seems that someone in the gov't miscalculated & it was cheaper to get a weekend car & pay $ for using it as a normal car. This is an old story & of course the mistake was corrected.

So even when money is involved the money minded PAP DO make mistakes:biggrin:

Unless you work in sales or a job that requires a car I don't think it's worth it to have a car. That's why I chose to buy a home that is nearby to amenities & a MRT station.

It can be worked easily.

A coupon cost $20. One year, there are 365 days, you minus the weekends and the holiday, you will have about 250 days to pay assuming you driver every day. So if the car road tax is $5000 and above, it is cheaper to get a weekend car. Further, there are saving because you may not drive every day.

That was last time. What i said may not apply now as the car tax rate policy may have changed.

U have the calculations or the link? Thanks

Rich family have multiple cars, and not all are driven every day. So the savings is more for the rich.

..Further, there are saving because you may not drive every day.... .

On any given weekday you can see many of these cars parked in HDB land. Obviously not many can afford the expenses of parking, ERP, etc.
Actually it makes more sense to use the $ to pay off one's housing loan.
