Dear Mr Zainal,
Please refer to the Subject which is a response to your representation made on 24 Mar 14.

I am utterly disappointed at the government’s template reply to this seemingly simple matter that they refuse to accede to.

Besides not committing to a waiver of the late payment and administrative charges that is well within the government’s means, this carefully worded reply also adds scorn to not only myself but the plight of thousands of mortgage struggling Singaporeans out there.

I distinctively remembered an article in the Straits Times dated 17 Mar 88 when then MP for Potong Pasir raised the issue of housing affordability, the Minister’s response was: “HDB will be reasonable with those who cannot pay”. That was no doubt, the most significant Q&A ever in our legislative history which no one can match to this day.

But I am still trying to figure out what has gone horribly wrong today, where HDB will not hesitate to “compulsorily acquire” one’s flat when they are unable to upkeep payments as in my case. My husband and I are down with several illnesses but we are still resilient in retaining our part time employment in a bid to try and pay HDB as much as we possibly could. But judging from governmental attitudes, this is simply not good enough.

I am still shocked by HDB statement that the “Silver Housing Bonus” meant to help lower-income elderly household supplement their retirement income, will have to first have to top up at least $60K in their retirement accounts to qualify for this scheme. Is this currently the biggest joke of town for April fools?

For your info, my daughter, Ms Jessica Ann Marie Kaur while still reeling from the effects of her unpredictable break off with her fiance, received a rude shock in the form of governmental confiscation of parts of her CPF in addition to barring her from public housing for 5 years. When we wanted to take over lease of her flat, HDB mentioned we cannot afford so forget it and banished us to a studio apartment in Yishun after sales of our 5-room flat.

I end by hoping you will do the right thing while in office and convey to your leaders that we are not advocating welfare but a roof over our heads, subsidize escalating medical costs and moderate your economic policies to be more socially inclusive in line with prevailing sentiments. That is all I have to say as an elderly poor woman, thank you.

Yours faithfully,
Mdm Conceicao Patricia Marie

Dear Mr Chan,

I am writing to request for aid as I will soon be unable to work due to various prevailing illnesses of both my husband and I.

We are struggling to make ends meet and will be parting ways with our children due to housing arrears that forced us to sell our 5-room HDB and the great difficulties in obtaining HDB relenting help. The HDB is by far, the most unsympathetic agency to be dealing with as is the momentum the country is currently proceeding.

While the pioneer generation package sounds noble if you are 65 years and above but is divisive when you are below. It also emits the wrong signal that the sacrifices of nation building are only restricted up to 1949 and not 1950-1965 (pre 65ers). It is further disheartening only 1 politician got it right by stating that every generation is a “pioneer generation” whose sacrifices must be borne in mind even as the nation’s political leaders raise their AI and draw on taxpayers’ bonuses.

My application for the blue CHAS card has not been approved even after I met up with the MSW of Pasir Ris polyclinic a long time ago. What appears on every pamphlet of MOH boasting on how easy it is to obtain the card is in actual fact, a far cry from it. Even when one is perceived to have met their criteria on print, they will make things difficult by disapproving applications and requesting for CPF statements/Medical reports later on for ‘justification’. These are all not conveyed to you at application point so most give up after initial application.

I hope that reading my predicament in present society after my ancestors arrived here 500 years back, you will render help accordingly, Thank you.

Yours faithfully,
Mdm Conceicao Patricia
