Driver thought cyclist she hit was tree branch

By Chong Shin Yen

HER car rammed into a cyclist from the rear so hard that he flew and hit the front windscreen, cracking part of it, before rolling onto the road.

But Cleopatra Wong Yuin Ping, 30, thought the body that smashed into the windscreen was a rotten tree branch that had fallen.

She did not bother to stop and continued driving her car along Holland Road. Wong was also unaware that her victim's bicycle was stuck in the undercarriage of the Lexus ES300 belonging to her father, despite the noise of the bicycle scraping against the road.

The bicycle was dragged for about 2km before it was dislodged.

When Wong, who was a teacher then, reached home, she went to bed.

She realised something was wrong only when she woke up in the morning and found out that the police had towed away the five-year-old Lexus.

Taken to court over the accident, Wong claimed that the soundproofing of the Lexus was so good that she thought the "sounds" she heard were caused by the tree branch.

Last month, she was fined a total of $2,400 - $800 on each of three charges - and disqualified from driving for a year.

She had pleaded guilty to inconsiderate driving, failing to stop after an accident and failing to render assistance after an accident.

The court heard that Wong was driving home along Holland Road at about 5.15am on Oct 19, 2008, when she hit the rear of a bicycle ridden by Mr Muhammad Asri Aris.

How about the Korean mother and infant killed between IKEA Alexander and the Anchorage by a British woman driver who left the country as soon as she was given à token fine?

Both taxi drivers belong to the age group of loyal PAPsupporters.

im reading this thread and im wondering why do people have so much sympathy for the driver and not the victim?what happens if the victim happens to be a innocent little girl who strayed onto the road?just because u are within the laws and within legal parameters doesnt exonerate you from everything.the conditions on that day were perfect,it was a perfectly straight road, the weather on that day was perfectly clear, there was nothing obscuring his vision or the visibility by even a slightest bit, like rain.the victim did not dash suddenly across the road,or jump in front of him like in the case of suicide, how can he not see anything or react or make no attempt to even swerve until he drove right into her?it worries me when im living in such country of blind donkeys.singapore is already a shitty enough country with drivers who think they are king of the road, zero patient,no road civility and do not give way to pedestrians and treat zebra crossings as a suggestion and do not even bother slowing down or stopping and time their passing so they zoom past u before u even step onto the other side of the road.in other countries like australia, drivers treat pedestrians as kings no matter on what road in which situation whether its required by law or not, they simply give way to people.singapore is a totally fucking barbaric country.

now if the person the cab driver killed was a local or ang moh in their full latex bodysuit lycra spandex on their 7k specialized road bike doing the tour de france down the side of the road before the traffic light turns red at 40km/h with 7 of their buddies in tow.i wouldnt mind that at all,in fact i would stand up and applaud.
