<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->I REFER to the report "Signs with good English, please" last Saturday.
It is laudable that over the last few years, consistent efforts have been made by the authorities to improve the standard of spoken and written English in Singapore. No doubt the latest campaign "Fix that Sign" is a step in the right direction.
Some months ago, during a visit to Kolkata, India, I came across a sign "Road Marge" while travelling on a newly built expressway. The word "merge" was possibly spelled "marge" because that is how a person who speaks Bengali would pronounce it. A person who speaks Oriya may have spelled it "morge". I would, therefore, suggest that the "Fix that Sign" campaign should leave intact at least some of the badly worded signs for the simple innocent amusement of locals and visitors alike.
With regard to spoken English, I would like to highlight one word which is very often wrongly used. In the insurance industry, the word "intimation" is used in relation to notification of claim. People tend to use the word "intimidation" in place of "intimation". Is there any explanation for such a widespread misuse of the word?
