Nicole Seah's comments on youth agenda intemperate
Letter from Chua Wei Ming
02:05 PM Apr 26, 2011
National Solidarity Party candidate Nicole Seah recently declared her intention to "represent the youths of Singapore to stand up and say this is what we want for our country, this is what we want for the future of Singapore and (that) we are going to be the ones to make that change".
As a youth of Ms Seah's generation myself, her remarks - which were made in a very assertive tone - worry me. They appear designed to politically activate members of a particular demographic by giving them a sense of entitled exclusivity over Singapore's future. Without Ms Seah's intending to, her energetic youth-oriented political agenda may in fact evolve into a generationally-divisive force.
It is correct to speak up for the interests of various segments of society, but I ask Ms Seah to be more nuanced and temperate when doing so. Singapore's future belongs to all Singaporeans; to give the impression that it lies in the exclusive domain of us youth in order to win us over politically is beguiling and divisive.
