THE current contentious issue on the affordability of public housing was given another airing by Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew who cautioned Singaporeans not to cast a protest vote against the ruling party over this.

As Singaporeans lament about rising flat prices, he said they ought to understand the Government sells them at a subsidised price, below market rate, so that they can own an asset that will appreciate in value over the years. It adds to their wealth and this is asset-enhancing policy Mr Lee believes citizens should not find fault with.

If they do, they must be 'daft', he said at a dialogue during a housing conference as part of a series of events to mark the Housing Board's (HDB) 50th anniversary.

And if National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan is unable to defend this policy, 'he deserves to lose' at the next General Election, he quipped to laughter from the participants, including a chuckling Mr Mah.

But if Mr Mah loses to the opposition, he warned that Singaporeans better sell their flats fast as it would no longer be of any value.

Mr Lee's blunt remarks were in response to a question by dialogue moderator Tommy Koh, who pulled out a Straits Times report which said at least three opposition parties are keen to contest Tampines GRC that Mr Mah helms, as they want to raise the affordability of public housing as an election issue to gain votes.

Two points.

In the first place, Tampines flats under Mah Bow Tan don't carry much value anyway.

Second place, that may be a cost to be borne but if RP can show more results in the following Election, it is a reasonable cost.

However if RP sits on its fat arse and let the Tampines residents bear the cost of supporting it for the next 25 years, then that cost is unreasonable.


That may well happen as one Hougang resident told me.

The main people who supported LTK are the Old Teochew speaking residents.

For some reason, younger teochew residents, non-teochews or malays or indians were not co-opted into the voters' base.

With the same base and as the old are often inflexible, LTK retained his percentage.

The drawback is the far-sighted ones left the estate and those who remained cannot sell their flat at the price they desire because of very few buyers.

It is galling because a few streets further down, the area is booming.

How the opposition can overcome this barrier, i do not know.

The residents, if they decide to choose the opposition, should be aware of this possibility that Tampines may become another Hougang or Potong Pasir.

The question is will RP become another ineffective WP or SDA?

If it does, then there is no point in voting for it.

If it does not and really tries its best, give it a chance.

Now..this is a scary statement being made by MM. It showed how shaky and on highly fragile ground that the current government is on, that the entire country's home value is dependent on 1(one) single person !

Compared to US, Taiwan, and many more countries when ruling party changes hands and still contiune to run efficiently, something is very wrong with a country that depended on 1 man.
