Many of these newer MRT stations are nothing more than glorified underpass network systems. That's why the overhead bridges nearby were demolished during the stations' construction. 
Each project must be very profitable. Think of the cabling, ventilation, aircon, lighting for all the underground tunnels. Then lifts, escalators, travellators etc.
