The 2 civic conscious gentlemen took the trouble and time to trial a murderer for sometime expecting him to be apprehanded and charged , instead he was finished off by a rash and inexperienced law enforcer who did not have enough patience and probably a coward.

If these 2 guys can tail im for so long , why cant the police do the same ? He should have waited for an opportunity by taking the necessary precautions before moving in when the situation is safe for all parties including the public.
He appeared to have panicked and coupled with inexperience and eagerness to shoot . Why shoot at the upper body when the lower portion is just as large if he is looking for body mass? I find him trigger happy besides being a "gabra king" , another life is lost because of his wrongful use of a pistol.

You asked alot of "whys". But all tyhese were asked after the incident had happened and not during.

How many police officers do we have is experience in handling such a matter? How many such incidents have ever took place in Singapore?

I dont know how huge is the murderer but the photo of the policeman tells me he is a huge and younger man capable of physically subdueing a smaller size man without resorting to using a firearm. If he had use his patience and waited for the right moment instead of panicking , he would not be pushed to a corner. No doubt he is acting on self defence , but has he caused his own self defence when he need not rush into it? Why aim at the top when the bottom is equally a large target? My personal opinion is that the police did not have a good assessment of the situation and he acted impulsively.

It is pretty easy for us armchair critics to questions the police officer action.

There is whole lot of experts here, questioning why did he not do this and that.

Just 1 simple question honestly, has you experience what he is going through at that time, someone rushing at you with a knife?

I am not a train police officer, but my human instinct would be to defend myself first, if i have a gun, someone coming at me with a knife i would shoot first, it is better him than me ending up in a coffin.

Some say why not shoot the legs, hands or arms, easier say than done when you are not the person having to make the decision on the spot or you are really an expert in shooting a moving target coming at you.

the key wheater to shoot just to disable the suspect ( legs, hands or arms ) is the distance between the cop and suspect when the cop make the decision to shoot and take out the suspect.

Did the papers report how far is the distance. 2M, 3M or 5M?

If the distance is far enough, a trained professional cop should be able to judge for himself in split seconds if he have enough time to shoot just to disable the suspect rather than aim to kill.

I thought VIBGYOR's question very pertinent - the answer would give a better appreciation of the situation that would render many of the hypotheses here academic.

So I checked it up - guys : it's a 20cm knife. (see CNA report below). I dun know about you guys, but to me, a 20-cm knife wielded by a disturbed man of whatever size coming at me, that is definitely life-threatening & this discovery has put paid my interest in this thread that has stretched over 100 posts !

SINGAPORE: When he was dispatched to hunt down a murder suspect who allegedly stabbed someone minutes earlier, the plan, in Staff Sergeant Azli Othman’s mind, was to calmly apprehend the man.
But he ended up shooting and killing Lim Bock Song, 43, on the train platform at Outram Park MRT station.
On Thursday, SSGT Othman gave a blow—by—blow account of the wild turn of events that afternoon of March 6, 2008.
He recounted, on Day 1 of a coroner’s inquiry into the deaths of Lim and his one—time buddy Tan Ah Chong, that he and his partner, Special Constable Corporal Tan Lye Ann, had spotted Lim at the station at around 3.15pm.
The unemployed man looked "flustered and very nervous".
He was also sweating profusely, pacing around aimlessly and "had a look on his face that he had done something wrong", said Mr Tan, 22, now a student.
Aware that Lim might be armed, SSGT Othman called out to him and signalled to him to move to a corner.
Staring straight at SSGT Othman, Lim suddenly flashed out a 20cm—long knife from his sling bag and charged towards him.
Seeing Lim wielding the weapon and advancing towards him menacingly, SSGT Othman said he believed the man was going to attack him and felt that his life was in imminent danger.
With his revolver drawn and pointed at Lim, SSGT Othman repeatedly shouted at him to stop.
He fired a round at Lim after the latter ignored his warnings.
"If he had listened to my warnings and did not move towards me, I wouldn’t have shot him," he told the court.
