The Singaporean woman in her 50s must have seemed easy prey to a would-be robber lurking inside a women's toilet in Johor Baru.

He grabbed her by the neck at knife-point and demanded money from her.

But what he didn't account for was that her scream would alert her husband.

And that Mr Choong Chee Wah knows "a bit of martial arts".

On hearing his wife, Mr Choong, 56, a freelance technical consultant, swung into action to free her from the robber's grip, then subdued him.

The robber even begged for mercy after Mr Choong applied his "tiger's claws" grip on his neck.

The incident happened at a JB petrol station last Thursday when the Choongs were heading to Desaru with friends for a National Day fun trip.

Mr Choong, a Malaysian with Singapore permanent residency, told The New Paper on Tuesday that the group of seven men and nine women arrived at JB in three cars at about 6am "to skip the traffic jam".

The group - most of whom were above 50 years old - had agreed to meet at the Shell petrol station immediately after the Malaysian immigration checkpoint.
