SINGAPORE: Singapore is planning a new media hub called Mediapolis.
It will occupy a space which is equivalent to about 20 football fields, and will sit alongside two other hubs in the One-North science and technology park serving the information technology and biomedical industries.
Times may be bad but the long-term outlook for the media industry remains encouraging, with a recent PricewaterhouseCoopers report projecting growth in Asia at 8.8 per cent annually.
Mediapolis hopes to tap into this, by creating one centre where local and international media firms, research and development (R&D) firms and media schools can come together.
It will serve as a core area to produce, package and distribute content for consumers around the world.
The project will kick off from next year, with its first phase targeted for completion by 2020.
And it has already gotten its first tenant on board - local media production company Infinite Frameworks, which recently co-produced the animated feature film “Sing to the Dawn”.
Information, Communications and the Arts Minister, Dr Lee Boon Yang, said: "The distinctive selling point of Mediapolis @ one-north is that it will bring together a cluster of creative minds in the entire media value chain. It will provide a connected environment designed to meet cutting-edge needs for ‘work, live, learn and play’.
“It will leverage on the arts and creative community at the nearby Wessex Estate, as well as with the science and technology R&D community at Fusionopolis."
