If you stay in Japan and earn Yen it's still not cheap, just not that expensive. It has been Japan's national policy since pre-war to force as many of the masses into the transit, rail and bus systems. It's a socialogical engineering policy not to let the masses feel as affluent and liberated as westerners. The burst of the the property and TOPIX bubble followed by downfall of Kanemaru Shin could have marked a turning point but it didn't last for long. However, credit to the Japanese, the quality and desirability of their products manage to hold their own worth in international markets, keeping the value of Yen up. Otherwise, they'd have become another Thailand.

bro ram , do you know why many japanese use train instead of driving to work ( even they have car ) ? because all japanese company give their staff 100% transport fees ( only train and bus ) its a must under the japanese law . i pay each and every of my staff monthly transport fee of 30'000yen per month about sin$450 .

some big japanese company even give their staff a place to stay ...now you know why japanese workers are so loyal to their company . we treat them as part of the family ....pay is pay transport is transport ...knn , singaporean working in singapoore still must pay their own transportation money to work from their own pocket ...

You can't afford to give them parking lots.

Exactly. My Jap ex-GF told me, even in big corps like Casio and Sumitomo, only certain ranks (very high) got parking lots.

thats why in japan it is possible to save money unless you are lazy like me .

all supermarket have a 50% discount on all fishes , meats and vegetable , after 6pm . thats why many japanese prefer to cook at home rather then eating outside if theres a choice .

If you do that in Singapore, the supermarkets would be empty all day long until 6 p.m. But I know what you mean, the same applies in US for fresh produce too, but I think the cut-off time is 8 p.m. for discount, unsold must discard. The standard of hygiene and freshness isn't free to consumers, they pay in overall higher costs of business would be passed on.

In Singapore, fresh perishables are allowed to be kept overnight. However, most supermarkets offer discounts too when the sticker date indicates it was from last night. It's still healthily edible but not that delicious.
