SINGAPORE - The police have arrested a woman who wielded a knife outside a secondary school in Tampines on Monday evening. The 53-year-old woman had stabbed herself in the abdomen and was tasered before her arrest.
Police were alerted at about 6.30pm about the woman, who was near Block 840 Tampines Street 82.
In videos posted online, the woman - who was wearing a green top, black pants and with a red bag looped around her waist - was seen surrounded by at least 10 police officers outside St Hilda's Secondary School.
At least three of the officers were decked in tactical gear and held what looked like sub-machine guns. At least one officer was holding a transparent police shield.
The woman was seen alternating between shouting and speaking to the officers in a mix of English and Malay. At one point during the stand-off, she looked to be making a phone call with her left hand and dropped something from her right hand. One of the police officers then kicked her while several other officers moved in to arrest her. At least five officers were observed pinning her on the ground.

Passers-by were seen looking at the commotion across the two-lane road, while a police officer was observed directing traffic along the road.
"When police officers arrived, the woman was uncooperative and refused to comply with police's instructions," said the police.

"The woman then stabbed herself in the abdomen and threatened to further harm herself."
A police officer discharged a taser to prevent the woman from injuring herself.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force was alerted at about 6.50pm and sent her to Changi General Hospital. She was conscious and in stable condition.
The woman was arrested for possession of an offensive weapon in a public place, suspected drug-related offences and was also apprehended under the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) Act.
Investigations are ongoing.

Woman found lying face down in Bukit Panjang canal rescued: SCDF

SINGAPORE - A woman found lying face down at the bottom of a canal in Bukit Panjang has been rescued, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) in a Facebook post on Wednesday night (March 10).

At around 5.50pm, SCDF received a call for help near Block 510 Jelapang Road.

Upon arrival, firefighters from Bukit Batok Fire Station deployed a ladder into the large canal.

SCDF's Emergency Medical Services crew then assessed that the woman had injured her head, hip and legs.

Firefighters and rescuers from the elite Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team carefully secured the woman onto a stretcher, and rescued her with a hoisting system, SCDF said.

More than 10 officers were involved in the operation.


The woman was taken to National University Hospital in an SCDF ambulance.

KKH Medical Staff Provide Assistance To Individual Outside Hospital​

After an individual required medical assistance outside KK Women and Children’s Hospital, almost 40 medical staff came rushing out of the hospital, some with medical equipment in tow.
A passer-by spotted the incident and shared it with Instagram page @sgfollowsall, commending the staff for their proactiveness.

On Friday (3 Feb), the OP said they were going home after an appointment at the hospital when they heard that help was needed over the hospital PA system.
A video of several medical staff rushing out was attached, some carrying medical equipment.

Both doctors and nurses could be seen rushing to the individual’s aid outside KKH.
The individual is believed to be a woman, although other details are unavailable presently.

“On (another) note, I can really feel the spirit of humanity when doctors & medical staff all came running from everywhere, almost abt 40plus staff, bringing so many things just to help save one person,” the OP said in a caption.

Hospital confirms individual required medical assistance​

Assoc Prof Ng Kee Chong, Chairman of the Medical Board at KKH, told 8world News that medical staff from the hospital provided medical assistance to a member of the public at around 3.30pm on Friday.
However, the hospital is unable to disclose more details, citing medical confidentiality.

While it is unclear what happened to the individual, we hope they are safe and well.
Kudos also go to the medical staff who dropped everything to render assistance outside the hospital.

SINGAPORE - A 16-year-old boy was charged with criminal intimidation after he allegedly held a knife and pointed it towards his victim, a district court heard on Saturday.
According to court documents, the teen, who cannot be named due to his age, intended to cause alarm to his victim in the vicinity of Block 427 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 at about 10.30pm on Friday.
In a video posted on Instagram page Singapore Incidents, several police officers are seen confronting a person in the middle of a busy road, holding up traffic.
The person then starts running against traffic, with the police chasing him.
The court ordered the boy to be remanded at Complex Medical Centre in Changi Prison for medical examination.
The case is expected to be heard again on June 23.
Those convicted of criminal intimidation may be jailed for up to two years and fined.

SINGAPORE - The driver of a car, which flipped multiple times after colliding with another car, was flung out of his vehicle and died, with another two people taken to hospital as a result of the accident.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the accident along the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) heading towards Changi after the Upper Bukit Timah Road exit at 9pm on Friday.
An SCDF ambulance was dispatched where the 33-year-old driver was found motionless and pronounced dead at the scene.
The police said the accident involved two cars.
Another 33-year-old male, the driver of the second car and his passenger, a 23-year-old female, were conscious when taken to Tan Tock Seng hospital.


Dashcam video posted on Facebook page SG Road Vigilante showed a black saloon car weaving in and out of traffic on the right most lane of the PIE, overtaking vehicles on their left.
In the footage, the black car can be seen losing control as it approaches a bend. It then skids across all four lanes of the expressway, hits a car and flips several times before and coming to a stop upside down on the road shoulder.


Debris from the collision can be seen scattered across the expressway in the video.
Around 20 police officers were gathered at the accident seen according to an eyewitness who spoke to Chinese news outlet Shin Min Daily News.
Shin Min also reported that the accident caused a jam which last three hours due to lane closures.
The police said investigations are ongoing.

SINGAPORE - The driver of a car, which flipped multiple times after colliding with another car, was flung out of his vehicle and died, with another two people taken to hospital as a result of the accident.

Jail for woman who lied about being raped by ex-boyfriend after an argument​

SINGAPORE – After an argument with her ex-boyfriend, a woman called the police and claimed he had raped her thrice during their relationship.
She recanted her statement more than a month later and admitted she had lied in order to get him into trouble.
On Monday, Chinese national Zhang Lutian, 22, was sentenced to five weeks’ jail after pleading guilty to one count of giving false information to a public servant.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Kevin Liew said the couple met in April 2021 via messaging platform WeChat. They started a relationship in August that year and started living together at the man’s residence.
On March 9, 2022, the two of them had an argument which stretched till midnight the next day. At 12.38am on March 10, Zhang called the police, saying her ex-boyfriend had hurt her, and she was bleeding.
Zhang told two police officers who came to the residence that she had been sexually assaulted by her ex-boyfriend. Given the serious allegation, the police dispatched 17 more officers to the scene, including five investigation officers and four forensic officers.
At 6.30am the same day, Zhang recorded a statement at Police Cantonment Complex claiming her ex-boyfriend had physically abused her and raped her thrice during their relationship.

She also repeated the false allegations to the medical officer during her medical examination.
Her ex-boyfriend had to undergo a police interview, had his mobile phones seized and passport impounded by the police, and was required to apply for a special pass to continue staying in Singapore. His nationality and age were not stated in court documents.
Over a month later, on April 20, 2022, Zhang admitted to the police she had lied and recanted her false statement.

DPP Liew said significant public resources were wasted to investigate the false allegations. Besides the officers at the scene, other forensic officers, cleaning crew and medical staff were activated for follow-up investigations.
Noting the gravity of the offence, DPP Liew asked for Zhang to be jailed for between six and 10 weeks.
Quoting the High Court’s comments in another similar case, DPP Liew said: “Any false allegation of rape must not be taken lightly. Not only is it a serious allegation, it is often difficult to verify because, in most of such cases, it is the word of one person against the other.
“Given the social stigma usually attached to such offences, it could irretrievably damage the reputation of the alleged rapist even if the allegations were subsequently proven to be false.”

Zhang had a mitigation plea prepared, but had to let an interpreter read it on her behalf after she broke down crying in the dock.
In her plea, she asked for a fine instead of a jail term, saying she had just turned 21 a month before the offences and her “cognitive ability for legal terms and awareness of the seriousness of the crime (was) still very immature”.
Zhang said she suffers from severe depression and anxiety, and claimed her ex-boyfriend had treated her rudely during disputes.
Describing the moment when she made the false allegations, Zhang said: “My mind was not conscious at the point in time. I was too desperate at the time and I wanted protection from the police.”
She said her ex-boyfriend has since forgiven her.
Apologising for taking up the police force’s time and resources, Zhang said: “I did not expect things to go this way, and this is my first time being involved (with) the law. I have realised my mistake, and I am remorseful for my actions.”
Zhang will start serving her sentence next week.

SINGAPORE – A woman lied to the police that a man she did not know had snatched her mobile phone in Geylang when, in fact, her boyfriend was in possession of the device at the time.
The prosecution said that she dropped the device when they quarrelled, and she was aware that her boyfriend had picked it up.
Thirty-six-year-old Lee Yi-Ching’s lies caused the police to activate 15 fast response cars to conduct a manhunt that lasted nearly two hours.
Police officers were also tasked to review footage from closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras around Lorong 32 Geylang.
The truth emerged when the police interviewed the Taiwanese woman’s boyfriend who said that he had taken the mobile phone and had intended to return it to her.
Lee finally admitted to her lies on Aug 25, 2023.
Deputy Public Prosecutor John Lu told the court: “The accused confessed that she had quarrelled with her boyfriend the previous day and he wanted to return the mobile phone to her, but she was upset with him.

“The accused also clarified that her boyfriend did not snatch or steal the mobile phone from her.”
On March 21, Lee pleaded guilty to giving false information to a public servant and was sentenced to five days’ jail.
Her boyfriend told investigators during an interview that he was with her at a pub in Sembawang on Aug 24, 2023.

The couple left at around 9pm and he drove her home in a van. For reasons not disclosed in court documents, Lee, who had consumed alcohol, screamed at the man before she alighted.
The man also got out of the vehicle and was walking her home when she dropped her mobile phone.
He picked it up but Lee refused to take back the device. Instead, she screamed at him when he tried to return it to her.
Her boyfriend left the premises with the mobile phone and decided to hand it to her the next day.

Shortly after 10pm, Lee went to Geylang Neighbourhood Police Centre and told a police officer that an unknown man had snatched her mobile phone while she was on her way home in Lorong 32 Geylang.
During the investigation, officers viewed CCTV footage showing her getting out of a van with a man before she got into an argument with him.
Police officers interviewed the boyfriend at around 3.15am, and he revealed that he had kept the mobile phone after Lee refused to take it back from him.
On March 21, the DPP urged the court to sentence Lee to up to a week in jail.
Stressing that her lies had resulted in a complete and significant waste of public resources, he added: “The accused maintained the false narrative for 16 hours and 42 minutes which resulted in the accused’s boyfriend having to be inconvenienced by the surprise and unpleasantness of the police investigations.”
For giving false information to a public servant, an offender can be jailed for up to two years and fined.

SINGAPORE – A manhunt involving more than 100 police officers was launched on May 9, after a Certis auxiliary police officer did not return his revolver and 10 bullets after his shift.
At a media briefing on May 10, the police said the Singaporean man, 27, was arrested within 2½ hours after a report was lodged at 9.50pm on May 9, following the completion of his shift at Changi Airport.
Officers from the Criminal Investigation Department and Special Operations Command were among the units activated.
The man, who holds the rank of sergeant, began his shift at 7.45am on May 9 and ended at 7.45pm the same day.
He was supposed to return his equipment by 8.30pm but failed to do so, causing the armoury system to issue an alert at around 8.35pm. Closed-circuit television footage showed him leaving the airport in civilian clothes before the police arrived.
He had been carrying a fully loaded Taurus revolver which had five bullets, a speed loader with another five bullets, and a baton in a pouch.
He was spotted walking around aimlessly past midnight in a shopping mall in Victoria Street when he was arrested.

The police said he did not put up a struggle and did not try to reach for the gun, which remained in the pouch.
Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police Zhang Weihan said: “The man involved in the unlawful carrying of a firearm has demonstrated a blatant disregard for the law and abused the firearms entrusted to him for his duties.
“Police officers had worked tirelessly to secure his swift arrest and ensured that public safety was maintained.”

The man will be charged on May 11 with the offence of unlawful carrying of a firearm. If found guilty, he can be jailed for up to 14 years and caned. Police said they intend to send the suspect for psychiatric assessment.
It is not known why the man did not return his weapon, or what he was planning to do with it.

In response to queries from The Straits Times, a spokesman for Certis said the officer has been suspended, and it will cooperate with investigations.
He said: “Certis has put in place stringent systems and processes to detect and deal with such incidents in a timely manner, including a warning system that triggers an alert when a firearm is not returned post-duty.
“The safety of the public is our utmost priority. Certis has zero tolerance for misuse of firearms and we expect full compliance from our officers to adhere to our strict protocol on weapons and controlled equipment.”

Past gun crimes​

April 12, 2021​

An off-duty Aetos officer, who was heavily in debt, robbed a moneylending firm in Jurong of more than $24,000 in cash while armed with a revolver. Mahadi Muhamad Mukhtar, now 41, was not in uniform but had his service revolver loaded with five rounds in the pocket of his trousers. He had handed a note to the employees of the shop, who gave him the money in a bag before he fled. He was arrested within five hours of the robbery.

Mahadi was sentenced to 16½ years’ jail and 18 strokes of the cane in 2022. Following an appeal in 2023, his prison term was reduced to 14 years.

To settle an illegal business deal gone wrong, Tan Chor Jin shot nightclub owner Lim Hock Soon five times in his flat, killing him. Dubbed the One-eyed Dragon because he was blind in his right eye, he had barged into Mr Lim’s flat and ordered him to tie up his maid, his wife and their teenage daughter.
Mr Lim was shot in the left thigh, left arm, back, right cheek and right temple.

After killing him, Tan took around $170,000 in cash and property, including jewellery, four Rolex watches and stacks of foreign currencies, before fleeing Singapore with an accomplice.
He was arrested by Malaysian police in Kuala Lumpur 10 days later, and sent back to Singapore on March 1 that year. Following a 10-day trial, he was convicted of firing a pistol and sentenced to death on May 22, 2007. He was hanged at Changi Prison on Jan 9, 2009.

Donning a cap and wig, and wearing a stocking over his head, Chan Bing Chaw, 58, snatched around $4,000 from a cashier at a 4-D outlet at Sun Plaza shopping centre. He fired a gun at a security guard chasing him, but missed. Chan was detained by the security officer and arrested by the police that day.
He faced the death penalty for firing a gun, but hanged himself in his cell at Queenstown Remand Prison in June 2006 before he was convicted.

Wan Kamil Mohamed Shafian and Ibrahim Mohamed had intercepted moneychanger Jagabar Satik on an overhead bridge near Havelock Road.
Armed with pistols that Wan Kamil had bought in Thailand, they grabbed Mr Satik’s bag, before Wan Kamil shot him twice, in the head and chest, fatally.
Both men admitted to the robbery, but were charged with and convicted of the murder of a taxi driver, Mr Koh Ngiap Yong, on Aug 8, 2000. They had stabbed Mr Koh to death with a bayonet and stole $700 from him before fleeing in his taxi.
Both were sentenced to death and hanged in October 2002.
