SINGAPORE - Straits Times Press, the book publishing unit of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), announced today the launch of Mr Lee Kuan Yew's new book.

Titled One Man's View of the World by Lee Kuan Yew, the 400-page volume conveys Mr Lee's views on the future of the major powers and regions of the world.

The book is made up of 11 chapters. The first seven cover countries or regions: China, the United States, Europe, other Asian powers (Japan, India and Korea), South-east Asia, Singapore and the Middle East.

Mr Lee also gives his views on the global economy and energy and climate change. Mr Lee, who turns 90 in September, also reflects candidly on life and death.

The final chapter is a series of conversations between Mr Lee and an old friend, former Chancellor of West Germany Helmut Schmidt. The two met to discuss international affairs over three days in May 2012, when Mr Schmidt visited Singapore.

The book was written with help from a The Straits Times team, who provided research and editorial material, and conducted a series of interviews with Mr Lee. Excerpts of these interviews are included in each chapter.

The team comprised Han Fook Kwang, Zuraidah Ibrahim, Chua Mui Hoong and Elgin Toh, as well as Shashi Jayakumar, an Administrative Officer on secondment to the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy.

Mr Lee wrote in the preface to his latest book: "My understanding is based on my observations and interactions with various people over the course of the last 50 years in government, during which I managed Singapore's foreign policy and met many key figures who had first-hand experience dealing with the global issues of the day."

On whether big power play will cause the United States and China to clash militarily, he wrote: "There is at present no bitter, irreconcilable ideological conflict between the Americans and a China that has enthusiastically embraced the free market. The Chinese need friendly relations with the US to secure continued access to its markets, investments, technology and universities. And the US simply has no need to make a long-term enemy out of China."

He added that China would be active in pursuing its territorial claims knowing they are "the biggest boy in the neighbourhood".

As for tiny Singapore, it is too small to change the world, he wrote: "But we can try to maximise the space we have to manoeuvre among the big 'trees' in the region. That has been our approach and we will have to be nimble and resourceful to be able to continue to do so."

Global leaders have endorsed the book.

Former US Secretary of State George Shultz wrote: "Lee Kuan Yew once again gives us clarity of thought, eloquence of expression, the depth of important ideas, and common sense. A must-read book!"

Dr Henry A. Kissinger, US Secretary of State (1973-1977), wrote: "Lee Kuan Yew's unique talents built a nation and helped secure an era of peace and prosperity in Asia. For decades it has been my good fortune to know him as a strategic thinker, a partner in international security, and a friend. Now, on the occasion of his 90th birthday, he has distilled his thinking on international affairs for a broader audience. With fresh and candid analyses of subjects ranging across the globe, One Man's View of the World demonstrates the acute insights that fellow leaders have sought from Lee Kuan Yew for half a century."

The book will be launched by Mr Lee on Tuesday, 6 August 2013, at the Istana. It is available at all leading bookstores for $39.90 (inclusive of GST) from 5 pm on 6 August. Online shoppers can also order the book from www.stpressbooks.com.sg from 6 August.

The book will be available in Malaysia and around the region soon after the launch.

Mr Lee's previous books include My Lifelong Challenge: Singapore's Bilingual Journey (2011), Lee Kuan Yew: The Man and His Ideas (1998), as well as Mr Lee's two-volume memoirs, The Singapore Story (1998) and From Third World to First (2000).

Has he released another book:eek:

I remember that his last book was released in 2013, titled "The Wit and Wisdom of Lee Kuan Yew". He must be getting desperate to churn out books because he must know that time is running out before he ups the lorry.

All of his books are now collectors' items. People are collecting the set and will eventually put single sets up for sale on ebay.

That's why all who buy will never read the books, but keep them in pristine condition.

If a hello kitty doll can sell for $126k on ebay, I reckon his set of books will sell for quite a sum.

In the old days with state controlled media a myth was created behind LKY. With the internet people now know more hard truths about LKY & his family & his cronies. You can say he is getting MORE credit:biggrin:

He obviously has alot of free time. I wonder why he has never considered helping out with the local charities:confused:

As a leader LKY should be setting an example. If more elites were involved in helping "lesser mortals" it would be good for Spore. Instead we have a serious social divide in Spore.

So, he keeps all the money and got free help from the PAP-Press to write the book?
How much taxpayer-funded resources did he use to write this book?

I doubt he can write well at this moment.
He got someone to record all his words and compiled the book on his behalf.

The main reason for a politician to write books is to reinforced his own ideas which he always believes them to be correct even though he is very wrong about it.
A good example is that general who commanded and fought the vietnam war. He has been giving talks and wrote books even after he retired from the military.
Until today he still don't admit his mistakes and screw ups in his strategy and tactics that he has executed during the war.

like most memoirs and autobiographies. it is not a matter of truth or lies, right or wrong. in this case, the General just told his side of the story.

Reason may be because Old Harry is narcissistic. As emperor of Peesai, the folks in the city-state fuel his ego which is multiplied many times over by the official state paper. Other than Singaporeans, most people the rest of the world don't bother about him or Peesai. Myself, I never read any book on him, last autobiography I read was of Eric Clapton and Ralph Sonny Barger.

Cheers!

Just wonder whether LKY will have the same fate as Chairman Mao ... many blame Mao for causing the death and sufferings to millions of his countrymen yet 37 years after his passing he is still a revered figure in China today. Many more are grateful to him for bringing pride and dignity to the Chinese people. His giant portrait is hung proudly at Tien An Men Square. Bus/truck drivers keep his photo in their vehicles. Some rural households still display his photo in their living rooms. And early this year when young Chinese people were protesting outside the Japanese embassy in Beijing over the island chain conflict some could be seen holding up his portrait shouting slogans in clenched fists .....

I wouldn't compare Harry to Mao. The chairman took China from a chaotic and downtrodden mess, united the masses, and kicked out the evil rot in the country. Yes, he made mistakes, but lifted the massive country from a devastated state to a progressive one. Whereas Lee took over the reigns of a built-up country at peace and a state of mid-development and rode on the backs of an obedient crowd with support from major powers. Besides, Singapore is a little speck compared to PRC with the largest population in the world. Ruling Peesai is a piece of cake compared with the behemoth that is China.

Cheers!
