By Qiyu Jaslyin On the evening of 1 December, some 500 Hougang residents were treated to an evening of stellar performances that were almost the kind that one would see on a Bollywood showcase at Hougang Avenue 5! The three-hour event started on a high with an enchanting classical performance by a pair of twin sisters as a prelude to the entrance of Member of Parliament (MP) for Hougang SMC, Mr Png Eng Huat, accompanied by Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) Mr Yee Jenn Jong and Mr Gerald Giam. Mr Png then ceremoniously lighted up the traditional Indian lamp to signify the triumph of light over dark, which is the essence of Deepavali – The Festival of Lights. This paved the way for a string of exciting performances, including an energetic Bhangra group performance of folk dance, a mix of melodic tunes belted out by the Mohican live band and two Sivaji performances, which involves a lively skit, and an ago-go style song and dance routine. Residents were on a high, enjoying the sit-down sumptuous buffet spread and cheering as some of their names were called upon as winners of the twenty lucky draw prizes up for grabs. The event organisers however made sure no one went home empty-handed as all attendees were given goodie bags. It was a multi-racial event, as a mix of different races were seen sitting together. One of the guests, Mr Kali, commented: “This is the second year I’ve attended and it’s getting better every year with people all over the island, including all the way from Jurong gathering here to celebrate with residents of different races.” Mr Karim, one of the residents here also quipped: “This is a wonderful event, very well organised and I’m happy to see so many residents and non-residents of Hougang coming together.” An elderly Chinese resident, who was spotted sitting at the edge of the stage with her granddaughter after dinner to soak in the atmosphere, said: “I have stayed here for 30 years and it is commonplace to see residents here, regardless of race, religion and creed to support the community events. Mr Png himself is a familiar face to Hougang all this while as he goes around visiting us at our homes.”

"To safeguard the interests of residents who elected the WP Team and gave the WP MPs the mandate to manage the town, AHTC worked overtime to upscale the town management system in use in Hougang TC, which had been tried and tested. AHTC counts itself fortunate to have been able to leverage on the Hougang TC system, which had been developed and in use for more than a decade, customized specifically for town council management requirements. If anything, this episode clearly demonstrates the risks to Singaporeans of having a lack of alternatives in every sense."
This artwork is painted by a very special artist I met during GE2011 when I was a candidate in East Coast GRC. I kept in touch with the mother of this special child after the hustings and started a small project called 'Down But Not Out'.
'Down But Not Out' is a project inspired by the love of a mother for her only child who has Down syndrome. Her love for her only son and her concern for his livelihood in the future moved us beyond words of encouragement and prayers.
‘Down But Not Out’ was thus born.
We took some of the paintings of this special child and made a set of greeting cards out of them. Simple pleasures in life such as spending time with the family or friends are celebrated in those paintings.
We believe there is no better way to appreciate the simple life than to experience it through the eyes of a beautiful mind.
If you are interested to buy these greeting cards ($10 per set of 12 cards), please contact the mother directly at [email protected].
Sharing a meal on the last day of the year with the people who kept Hougang and Aljunied humming 24 hours a day - the staff of AHTC, Emergency Maintenance Service Unit, conservancy crew, plumbers, and electricians.
A spiritual shift is occurring. Many people around the world have found themselves on the verge of something vast, and their experiences can't be explained. ... http://thefederationoflight.ning.com...sg_share_video
In the 56 years of WP history, we have never put up a variety show before. 'Bricks in Blue', was a show specially organised to thank residents of Aljunied, Hougang and supporters of the WP.
