'Why do you want to help me?' Angie Lau receives $100k from Indonesian businessman for cancer treatment

After reading a recent report about Angie Lau's long battle with cancer, Indonesian businessman Dato' Sri Tahir (also known as Ang Tjoen Ming) wanted to pay her a visit.

The two chatted for about half an hour, with the 72-year-old giving Angie, 54, encouragement and financial support, reported Lianhe Zaobao.

"The important thing now is for you to be cured. Your children are still around," he told the local getai singer as he handed her a $100,000 cheque.

"Why do you want to help me?" asked Angie, to which he replied: "You are not the first, and will not be the last."

He said that even though he didn't know Angie prior to their meeting, he felt that it is a blessing to be able to help others
, and hopes to do so for Angie. "You have to recover, raise your children well so that they can be good people. You are not alone."

He also shared that his sister was diagnosed with breast cancer in the past and was able to lead a normal life after receiving treatment in Singapore, adding that Angie shouldn't be discouraged.

After he left, Angie remarked: "I believe that a miracle will happen!"

In 2021, Tahir gifted $1 million to Nanyang Technological University to commemorate his 69th birthday to fund student bursaries.

Angie was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer and lymphoma in 2014 and recovered with treatment.

In March 2023, her cancer relapsed and advanced to stage 4, with the cancer cells spreading to her lymph nodes, lungs, throat, bones and brain.

[[nid:685680]]

Last December, Angie shared positive news about her condition that her brain tumour had shrunk in size from 2cm to 0.03cm and that she felt she had "improved by 60 to 70 per cent".

However, a check-up in January revealed that her cancer index had risen. In April, Angie was hospitalised for a week after fluid was found in her lungs.

On May 24, Shin Min Daily News reported that she has to undergo longer chemotherapy sessions for the next few months as her condition hasn't improved.

She said then that she felt positive but also tired as "the journey is so long and difficult".

Aliens Might Be Living Among Us ''Disguised As Humans'', Claims Harvard Study

The research also explores the idea that UFOs, or unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) could be spaceships visiting Earth-based alien friends.

The possibility of extraterrestrial life has always fascinated humans and we've been searching for alien life for some time now. However, despite decades of research, we still don't have a concrete answer to the question of whether we are alone in the universe. Now, a Harvard University study has claimed that aliens could be living among humans secretly on Earth.

A new paper by researchers at Harvard University's Human Flourishing Program posits that ''unidentified anomalous phenomena'' (UAP), more commonly referred to as UFOs and extraterrestrial beings, could be living underground, on the moon or even walking among humans. The research also explores the idea that UFOs, or unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) could be spaceships visiting Earth-based alien friends.

The paper states, ''The author became increasingly aware of the depth of evidence and theory that also tentatively supports another extraterrestrial explanation: the ''cryptoterrestrial” hypothesis (CTH) – our focus here – which holds that UAP may reflect activities of NHIs concealed here on Earth (e.g., underground) and its environs.''

The study further investigated the concept of so-called ''cryptoterrestrials'' -- beings that may be living among us disguised as humans, originating from Earth's future, or descending from intelligent dinosaurs.

The study claims that Cryptoterrestrials can come in four forms:

  1. Human Cryptoterrestrials: A technologically advanced ancient human civilisation that was largely destroyed long ago, but continued to exist in remnant form
  2. Hominid or Theropod Cryptoterrestrials: A technologically advanced non-human civilization consisting of some terrestrial animal which evolved to live in stealth (e.g., underground). These could be an ape-like hominid descendant or descendants of "unknown, intelligent dinosaurs."
  3. Former Extraterrestrial or Extratempestrial Cryptoterrestrials: These beings could have arrived on Earth from elsewhere in the cosmos or from the human future and concealed themselves in stealth, such as in the Moon.
  4. Magical Cryptoterrestrials: Entities that are less like homegrown aliens and more like "earthbound angels." These beings relate to the human world in ways that are less technological and more magical, such as "fairies, elves, nymphs."
The researchers admitted that their research was "likely to be regarded skeptically by most scientists," but urged the scientific community to consider their claim "in a spirit of epistemic humility and openness." The paper is yet to be peer-reviewed.

Earlier, a former US intelligence officer claimed that the US government is hiding an unidentified flying object (UFO) the "size of a football field".

2 Men Save Dad and His Young Sons from Drowning in Colorado River

https://sg.yahoo.com/news/2-men-save-dad-young-003353185.html

Two men are being hailed as heroes after saving a father and his two sons from drowning in Colorado.

“Saving lives sometimes comes down to being in the right place at the right time,” the Grand County Sheriff's Search and Rescue said in a Facebook post on June 9.

In its caption, the department explained how a father's outing with his sons quickly took a dangerous turn when their inflatable kayak flipped over in the Colorado River. Luckily, two civilians intervened and got the family to safety, and a third snapped a photo of the rescue they’ll never forget.

“A 40-year-old man was in an inflatable kayak with his 2 sons, 8 and 10 years old, when they flipped in whitewater upstream from a popular beach near Mile Marker 6 on Highway 128,” the organization said.

Moab, Utah resident Gaar Lausman, a former associate of the department, happened to be spending time at the beach and witnessed the incident unfold.

Per the post, Lausman lept into action, using his paddle board to help the children, but was unable to assist the father.

“The 10-year-old was reportedly wearing a belt-pack PFD that inflated with a C02 cartridge. That PFD had flipped the boy over so he was face down in the water."

The local agency added that the 8-year-old’s personal floatation device “was too big and failed to keep his head above water.” Still, Lausman retrieved the children.

With their dad still stuck in the water, trying his best to stay afloat, “life-long Moab resident Daniel Wright just happened to be traveling upstream on his jet ski.”

'Narrowly escaped death': Construction worker gets to his feet after being hit, run over and dragged by bus

A construction worker had a close shave with death after he was struck by a bus on Thursday (June 27) and dragged under for a few seconds. Miraculously, he managed to get to his feet after that.

The accident happened around 5.20pm at the junction of Anson Road and Palmer Road.

In a video uploaded to Facebook group SG Road Vigilante, the worker, wearing a bright green reflective vest and hard hat, is seen walking to the bus lane and placing a cone.

Reconstructive surgeries, organ transplant: How a migrant worker spent 7 years in hospital following a workplace accident

https://www.asiaone.com/singapore/r...rs-national-university-hospital-trauma-centre

During Rezza’s lengthy stay at NUH, Dr Raj and his team were continuously searching for ways to treat the patient's intestinal failure, which was considered a rare condition.

"The only possible treatment for him was an intestinal transplant, which is an incredibly rare procedure and only done a handful of times in Singapore with living related donors," said Dr Raj.

"For migrant workers, we don't have a list of donors. Many countries don't have this as well because this is a very new field."

After speaking to medical experts from around the world, Dr Raj finally found a hospital in Mumbai, India, that was willing to perform the surgery on Rezza.

4-year-old accidentally shatters Bronze Age jar at museum

A 4-year-old boy accidentally smashed a Bronze Age jar at an archeological museum in Haifa, Israel.

The ancient artifact, which experts say was at least 3,500 years old, was on display without a glass case near the institution’s entrance at the time of the incident.

In a statement emailed to CNN on Wednesday, the Hecht Museum defended its decision to present certain objects without protective glass, adding that its founder Reuben Hecht had emphasized making artifacts accessible to the public.

“The museum believes there is a special charm in experiencing an archaeological find without any obstructions,” the statement said, adding that the institution would “continue this tradition” despite the incident.

Speaking to the BBC, the child’s father said his son had “pulled the jar slightly” on a visit to the museum last Friday because he was “curious about what was inside.” The man added that he was shocked to see his son beside the broken artifact and had initially thought, “It wasn’t my child that did it.”

The boy’s parents could not be immediately reached by CNN.

hecht-museum-jar2.jpg

The museum believes the artifact dates from between 2200 BC and 1500 BC. Predating the reigns of King David and King Solomon, who ruled the kingdom of ancient Israel and Judah in the 10th century BC, it would have been used for storing and transporting liquids like wine or olive oil.

While archaeologists have uncovered similar vessels in the past, most of them were broken or incomplete, according to the museum. The fact the displayed item was discovered intact made it an “impressive find,” the statement added.

Speaking to Israeli news outlet Ynet Tuesday, the museum’s head Inbal Rivlin invited the boy and his mother, who was also present during the incident, back to the museum for a private tour.

“The museum is not a mausoleum but a living place, open to families (and) accessible,” she told the news outlet, adding: “We are appealing to parents: Don’t be afraid. Things like this happen. We will fix (the jar) and put it back.”

Rivlin said the museum had printed new signs indicating which items can, or cannot, be touched.

Opened on the grounds of the University of Haifa in 1984, the Hecht Museum contains archeological discoveries dating back to the Chalcolithic period (around 4500 BC to 3500 BC). A restoration expert has been approached to restore the broken jar with the help of photographs, the museum said.

“The jar will be returned to its place in a short time,” the statement continued, adding that the museum would use the restoration as an opportunity to educate the public.

The boy’s father meanwhile told the BBC he was sorry that the jar “will no longer be the same item.”

Kind-hearted Toa Payoh hawker, selling $2 chicken rice, swarmed with rude outlanders

Iman Sofia
Fri, 6 September 2024 at 5:00 am GMT-7·2-min read

From 1 to 3 Sep 2024, Poh Kee Chicken Rice in Toa Payoh had offered an insanely valuable promotion to thank its loyal customers, charging only S$2 for a plate of chicken rice. However, the deal concluded on a sour note merely hours before the end of the first day.

Calling the small event Customer Appreciation Day, 44-year-old Mr Poh had intended to give back to the community by offering the low price for 3 whole days. The promotion was expectedly met with a huge crowd, though he soon realised that most of the visitors lining up were unfamiliar faces.

Mr Poh’s plan to express his gratitude to his regulars failed as they were forced to leave instead due to the long queue, deciding to return only after the promotion wrapped up.

The original price ranges from S$4 to S$6 — featuring dishes like Chicken Rice, Roasted Pork Rice, and Char Siew Rice. Customers were eager to get a bite as the deal was not only applicable to plain ol’ Chicken Rice, but other options as well.

Wow, just when I thought Mr Poh’s generosity couldn’t get any bigger!

Sadly, not everyone can appreciate nice things given to them. The stall was continuously hit by hostile customers — greedy opportunists insisting on getting half-a-chicken with their S$2 rice, grumpy ones threatening to leave a bad review if the offer was not made permanent, and ‘Karens’ that got angry when the chicken rice sold out at 4pm. Imagine that!

For the remaining days of the promotion, Mr Poh resolutely changed the deal to a S$2 discount per order instead.

Doctor saves life of man who suffered heart attack at Yishun MRT station before heading to work

https://www.asiaone.com/singapore/d...rral&utm_campaign=A1+trending&utm_content=c13

SINGAPORE - A doctor on his way to work at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital saved a heart attack victim, and then took a bus to the accident and emergency (A&E) department where he ended up being the man's attending physician.

Paramedics who rushed the man to the hospital were not aware Dr Lim Shi Ping was working that day.

The 63-year-old man survived the heart attack and was discharged from hospital five days later.

The incident happened around 7.30am on Aug 18.

The 27-year-old junior doctor told The Straits Times that he had left his car at home to catch the train, from where he lives in Novena, to Yishun because it was a Sunday. At the Yishun MRT station, he noticed a crowd at the bottom of the escalator. A man had collapsed and was gasping for air.

Dr Lim, who has been a doctor for two years, pushed through the crowd and introduced himself as a medical doctor. The man had no pulse by then.

The doctor immediately commenced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and directed people around him to call for an ambulance.

SMRT station manager Kelvin Leong jumped in and instructed station staff to get the automated external defibrillator (AED). He also took over CPR while Dr Lim prepared the AED.

Dr Lim said he was stressed because it was outside a controlled hospital environment.

"In a hospital, there are medical personnel. Everyone is trained, and they know their roles in the resuscitation," he said.

"Outside, we have to try to make use of what's available and get the help of other people," he added.

Railway worker rescues child from oncoming train in India

https://globalnews.ca/news/7773356/boy-train-rescue-india-video/

1727285494682.jpeg

Heart-stopping video from India shows a railway employee risking his own life to save a young boy after the child tripped and fell onto the tracks in front of an oncoming train.

India’s Ministry of Railways released CCTV footage of the close call, which happened at Vangani station in Mumbai on April 17.

The six-year-old boy tripped while escorting his mother, who is visually impaired, the Free Press Journal reports.

Video shows the boy leading his mother along the edge of the platform when he goes a step too far, losing his balance and falling onto the tracks below.

The boy struggles to get up as a train rounds the bend in the background. His mother can be seen calling for him, unaware of where he is.

The child gets to his feet and tries to climb up onto the platform, but he is too small.

Fortunately, railway employee Mayur Shelkhe saw the boy go down and immediately rushed in to help.

In the video, Shelkhe dashes toward the boy and the oncoming train, then heaves the child onto the platform before scrambling up himself.

Several other bystanders rush to attend to the pair after their close call.

“I ran toward the child but also thought that I might be in danger too,” Shelkhe later told India’s ANI news agency. “Still, I thought I should save him.”

The Ministry of Railways hailed Shelkhe as a “Good Samaritan” who saved the boy “just in the nick of time.”

“He risked his life to save the life of the child,” the ministry said on Twitter. “We salute his exemplary courage and utmost devotion to the duty.”

Railway officials later celebrated Shelkhe’s heroism in a special ceremony.

Politicians, celebrities and retail brands rushed to congratulate Sheklhe and offer him rewards on social media.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal also applauded Shelkhe for his courage.

“His act cannot be compared with any prize or money,” Goyal tweeted. “But he will be rewarded for fulfilling his responsibility and motivating humanity with his work.”

The 'genius' Indian who shattered caste barriers

e3476760-8c4e-11ef-810a-d5f8c51e7523.jpg.webp

In a small, crowded tenement in the slums of India's Pune city, Shailaja Paik grew up, surrounded by alleys strewn with garbage and battling the daily challenges of limited water and no private toilet.

Today, she stands as one of this year's 22 recipients of the prestigious MacArthur "genius" fellowship, a testament to a career dedicated to researching the complex lives of Dalit women - those born into the caste considered “untouchable” in South Asia's hierarchical society.

The MacArthur Foundation’s award - which includes a $800,000 [£615,000] stipend given over five years - isn’t just recognition for her research on caste, gender, and sexuality but a powerful endorsement of her ongoing mission: to unravel the ideas, actions, and lives of the oppressed.

Marlies Carruth, director of the MacArthur Fellows Program, says the interdisciplinary award seeks to “enable” people with a track record and the potential to produce additional extraordinary work.

"Through her focus on the multifaceted experiences of Dalit women, Paik elucidates the enduring nature of caste discrimination and the forces that perpetuate untouchability and marginality," the Foundation said while announcing this year’s nominees.

Spending her childhood in a 20x20ft room in Pune’s Yerwada slums, Paik remembered standing in long queues every day to fetch water from the public tap for cooking and cleaning.

“On all levels - social, educational, emotional and mental - all this definitely had a profound effect on me,” she said.

Her younger sister Rohini Waghmare said it was their parents who emphasised the importance of education and ensured all their children studied in English.

“Usually when there are daughters, the mentality is that girls should get married soon,” she said.

Paik was an excellent student throughout school and college.

Her mother Sarita Paik credited her hard work for her success. “I'm less educated but her father and I always felt that girls should learn a lot.”

But studying was a challenge, Paik said. “I remember wrapping myself up in a quilt and telling my family members to speak softly and not make any noise," she recounted.

"I would go to sleep around 7:30pm until around 3am, then get up to study until 6-7am, before leaving for school.”

It also plays a role in enhancing "global conversations of social justice", Paik, who is a professor of history at the University of Cincinnati, added.

"Dalits constitute 17% of India’s total population,” Paik said. “There are statistics but there was no qualitative research. No one had written the history of caste through the vantage point of Dalit women, so I decided that I wanted to do this work.”

In 2014, she published her first book, Dalit Women's Education in Modern India, examining the “double discrimination” of gender and caste they face in accessing basic rights.

"Historically such a large population was not allowed any form of education, public infrastructure, public water bodies or wells, much less the wearing of slippers or new clothes, even if one could afford them.”

Having come from this background, Paik made it the centre of her research and writing.

"Dalit women are undoubtedly the most disadvantaged and oppressed. They are the Dalits among Dalits in terms of gender and politics," Paik said.

She herself is no stranger to the discrimination and recalls people around her being surprised that she as a Dalit woman had received the Ford Foundation Fellowship for her PhD.
