Google to leave China April

Not true. US could easily have racial blowup over immigration or something like that. At that time some form of filter to tame the sentiments is vital. Remember over there they have guns and things can turn bad.

How about Greece and the strikes or France and its restive Muslim pop or Ireland. And you miss the whole point - development of very sophisticated software to filter out extremist messages vs crude wholesale blocking of info.

Google can do it in China, use the proceeds from its China ops to fund it.

If someone's going to develop such a SW it will be the PAP gov't :D
I'm sure LHL is tired of hearing those mee hum jokes & LKY of people who want to know where he keeps his loot :)

Maybe such a tehnology already exists?? but a 1st world gov't wouldn't be allowed to use it. They'll be kick out by the citizens. The reason a country is 1st world is that the citizens are ever watchful.

Google is NOT high value industry. It is just a seach engine for internet content. The more content there is the more useful Google is. It makes money from Ads. If you go to China, ads are big business. The people there have $$$. If you are an olympic medalist you can stand to make millions of endorsements of Chinese consumer goods.

In China, to make 1 million Yuan profit requires the same amount of investment, effort and time as in making 1 million profit in $US in America. But, the exchange rate between US$ and Yuan is 6.8 to 1. A company like Google, which probably has been making easy money all along, is now faced with the prospect of making a 'blood, sweat and tears' living in China. It's better to quit now and wait for the Yuan to appreciate significantly before re-entering the market. The present US to Yuan exchange rate cannot support a 'high-valued' industry such as Google.

In 1973, Singapore could only maintain one Plaza Singapura (Yaohan) mall; now, the whole island is full of malls. The Singapore dollar has appreciated significantly since then.

Benefits of controlling information are debatable.

Just look at how the PAP has tried to hide the numbers of FT they're letting into Spore. When people finally realised the vast numbers there is now anger & the PAP are afraid of the next elections

You have to understand that the americans hold their rights to freedom of speech very seriously.

If any gov't tried to impose controls, there are safeguards in the sytem & there would be challenges from various groups & individuals.

The Ang Mohs thinks the world revolves around them. They dun realize that there is no such thing as a 1 size fits all model. You cannot anyhow just apply something from the west to every freaking country in the world. It just doesn't work

Like elephanto mentioned, YouTube and Facebook are blocked in China. Heck they even blocked the entire province of XinJiang from the net after the riots last year. I'm still waiting for links to recover so that I can access the network of the branch office in the city of Korla. If they can already block out big sites and lockdown an entire province, you really think petty threats from Google will work against them? Google should start thinking from their head and not through their asses. At the end of the day, they are the ones who will lose out, not the Chinese government

Then they are fucking stupid, no wonder they are slipping away. LOL :D:D:D

Many people including Sporeans want to go to the US.

Must be crazy for wanting to leaving Spores paradise :)

Other 1st world gov'ts might not be as extreme as the US, but on the whole they still don't support censorship. On any given day the media will have differing viewpoints, from ultra left to ultra right.

Many Sporeanst who are used to having things spoon fed & presented in black & white, are going to be find it strange. Must be all the confuse-ing education, I mean confucianism based education

I can understand why people feel insecure in Spore. Fear of loosing one's job, fear of not having enough money for food, healthcare, children,..

Never had these fears when I was living in Canada. As for the US have friends & relatives who have gone there and some may come back to Spore for holidays but none have come back for good,

Some of my fondest memories are simple things like a peaceful moment at a fishing hole, carefree moments where there's no one around,... Maybe because I'm a simple guy.

As for how my poor friends & relatives are doing I'll use the Spore yardstick of success. They have houses, a few cars(very common),.. So I guess they are doing ok.
