This is very typical GMS - he can't control his boasting at every turn. Proud parents who post such things focus on the kid, university and what he/se will be studying, GMS on the other hand hardly shared anything about his daughter and devotes most of the post either lambasting PAP or peacocking over the university as being the best in the world.

Samsters here have a soft spot for GMS because he is anti-PAP, but as someone who has met him before all I can say is he behaves no better than the PAP when it comes to elitism. This goes back to many years ago when my friend (call him John) and I attended a forum organized by WP (GMS was a rising star in WP then). The WP presenters, including GMS, took turns to share their perspectives on the economy, society, politics etc.

At that time WP's bench strength was very weak and GMS stood out as one of the better articulated ones with his polished English and constant emphasis on having obtained an honors degree in Economics from NUS. I could tell much of the audience were wowed by his presence and ability to project an image of a well respected researcher and strategic thinker especially when compared to his rather unimpressive WP colleagues at that time.

Unfortunately for him, John was the real deal. He was a consultant with MBB and definitely not that easy to smoke and felt none of what he said made much sense, so during the mingling session he posed a series of inquisitive questions challenging the veracity of GMS's presentation slides and thought process. What surprised me was instead of recognizing a fellow peer and entering into a discussion in earnest, GMS went highly defensive.

He started to throw out one irrelevant jargons haughtily while claiming that he had a lot of real life experience. However John simply deflected them easily and pointed out his technical inaccuracies. He got so mad that he turned to two uncles that were in the conversation and remarked "See, that's why I don't like to talk to people who don't know Economics. I have an honors degree from NUS for a good reason". The uncles simply smiled uncomfortably as they could not follow the conversation at all.

John was so disgusted that he simply walked away. Till today, GMS probably still doesn't know the guy he did his elitist shtick on was a Princeton Master in Finance and would eventually rise to be a Partner to one of the MBBs. Since that day, nothing of what I can see of the public GMS suggests to me that he has changed for the better.
