Fund to help workers whose companies goes bust: Subra

KUALA LUMPUR: Workers who are out of job because their companies go bust will be given relief allowances from a fund the Government plans to set up next year. At present such workers are left in the lurch if their company goes under receivership or ceases operations, Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said.

He said under the plan, affected workers would be given an allowance over a period of time until they found another job. The amount of allowance and the period that one would be eligible to receive it would be announced when the fund is launched, he said when opening the My Career Fair 2010 here Friday.

“We are not proposing for the allowance to be given for a long term,” the minister added. Dr Subramaniam said the Government has intensified current training and skills programmes to cater for the high demand for skilled workers in technical fields.

“I urge companies to play a more prominent role in their employee development, including having frequent assessment programmes,” he said, adding that a mentor programme was another way to guide graduates to obtain competency and relevant work experience.

On the call for the age requirement for domestic workers to be reduced from 21 to 18 years, he said it came under the purview of the Home Minister. “We would have to have discuss with them,” Dr Subramaniam said, adding that there must be certain reasons for the age limit to be set at 21 years.
