Singapore has became so competitive that only the elite of the elites can survive. I was rejected in my job interview today, not because I was not qualified for that job, but because in 1 job vacancy, there were 20 applicants, and unless you are extraordinary, you wont get that job.

This intense competition is undesirable and the fault lies with the government. But the same competition was not shared with the ruling party itself. I dont see the PAP having to compete with 20 other opposition parties to be the ruling party. Maybe we can import other foreign opposition parties into singapore to compete.

singapore has become a horrible place to live in - theres competition for jobs, housing, public transport, road space, foodcourt seats during peak hours, even bandwidth (esp public hols internet speeds slow to a crawl) ...

PAP must face competition too ...

LKY made sure no opposition is strong enuff to overthrow his son ... so opposition parties remain very very weak ...

bros & sis -- pls pls cooperate with me on this - i don't expect to kick out the PAP - at least not in the near future ...

but for a start, can we give them a mandate of < 66.6% ? im not asking for too much ... give them like 55%-60% support, that will make them sit up & acknowledge the people's dissatisfaction ... at least bloody loong won't dare to claim a 'resounding victory' ... he would have just scraped thru, to form the govt ...

The intense competition is important. Without the FTs swarming in, Singapore would have started to look like a sleepy town. The FTs hunger and drive boosts Singapore.

For the ruling party, the vetting of candidates is very robust. For every MP candidate selected, more than 20 shortlisted candidates are rejected.

I sympathise with you but competition is not a reason to reject FTs. It is the very reason why we need more and more FTs.

I would say a mandate of 52% to 55% is sufficient. If they kwai lan with the people again after election let them have only 20% to 30% next time. That is how democracy works. But I think that is not possible as their base of all the old people and those super rich/doing big business/civil servants is still very big.

My friend, who is a foreigner, graduated from a foreign university has secured 2 good jobs. I, a singaporean, graduated from a local university, can't even find 1 good job. Everything on par, the difference between he and me is he is asking for a malaysian salary, i am asking for a singaporean salary. In this case, where is fairness? There is no need for any election campaign, we already know who to vote for.

I have absolutely no issue with competition. It is the unbalanced conditions between countries that is the problem. Can the government abolish NS? Can the government bring down the costs of living to that in third world countries? It is no longer a question of competition, it is now about survival. If the government cannot perform, I don't see why I need to pay them the high salaries. If the only way they can ensure Sinkieland's survival is to import foreigners en masses, then I am only willing to pay them what the ministers in third world countries are getting paid. Don't give me the crap about corruption, if they want to be corrupt and are found out, they can always be dealt with severely by the mob.

Then the coming election is extremely important to vote in all opposition for the intense competition in Parliament.

Perhaps someone should form a far-right or centre right party, and we vote for them to get them into parliment. Then perhaps the government will listen.
