Former Workers Party member and acupuncturist Zeng Guoyuan will be contesting in the Hougang by-election as an independent, according to a Facebook page ‘We want a by-election in Hougang SMC within 3 months‘.
Zeng was photographed collecting his nomination forms this morning from the Election Department. He was a Workers’ Party candidate in Bukit Timah in 1991.
He also tried to contest in the General Election last year as an independent candidate in Mountbatten, but did not do so eventually.
Zeng’s intention to contest in the Hougang by-election was ridiculed by netizens who predict he will lose his deposit.
The father of two was fined $3,000 in 2009 for putting up banners – featuring a picture of terrorist Mas Selamat Kastari – without approval. He said the banners were sunshades to protect his shops.
The Workers Party has fielded its veteran leader Png Eng Huat to contest in the by-election against PAP’s Desmond Choo.
Many political observers have predicted an ‘easy’ victory for WP including Yahoo News which has promoting the Workers Party in all its news articles on the by-election so far.
