Three workers at Changi Airfreight Centre jailed over theft of computer chips worth $2m

Published on Jun 2, 2014 4:09 PM
By Ian Poh

SINGAPORE - Three airport logistics workers were each sentenced to jail terms of between 20 and 32 months on Monday, for stealing more than $2 million worth of computer chips.

The scheme, executed on four occasions last year, involved removing and pasting clearance labels onto cartons of goods earmarked to be stolen. This allowed the loot, none of which was recovered, to be driven out of Changi Airfreight Centre without arousing suspicion.

The men are brothers Janagarajan Allagandran, 19, and Devakumar Allagandran Chettiar, 18, and Visvanathan Munusamy, 33. All Malaysians, the trio were here on work permits for logistics companies.

They were all involved in two of the jobs involving $921,989 worth of chips. On one of these two occasions, which took place last Sep 25, Visvanathan identified cartons containing $498,839 of chips to steal and alerted his accomplices. Devakumar's role included peeling a clearance label off other cargo. He passed this and a delivery order to his brother, who stuck it onto the earmarked cartons and drove the goods on a forklift to a meeting point. Here, the items were moved to another vehicle and driven out of the compound by their uncle, Arumugam Chettiar Allagappa.

SINGAPORE - A maid stole $6,300 worth of jewellery from her employer on her last day of work, but was caught after photos of the loot she posted on Facebook came to her victim's attention.

Filipino Evelyn Macaraya Clotario, 35, was sentenced to three months in jail on Wednesday after pleading guilty to stealing from 42-year-old Scalzi Barbara. Only about $2,000 of the loot - which included necklaces, bracelets and rings - was recovered as Clotario had remitted the rest back home.

She worked for the Briton from Feb 21, 2012 to Jan 21 this year at the Flynn Park condominium along Yew Siang Road.

In May, Ms Scalzi's friend told her about how her own maid had stolen a necklace, and she only discovered the theft after checking the maid's Facebook page.

A Malaysian technician who entered Singapore at Woodlands Checkpoint without presenting his passport was jailed for six weeks yesterday.

Mohd Sani Mohamad Salleh, 33, admitted to an amended charge of failing to present his Malaysian passport to the officer on duty before he entered the country on April 21. He was originally charged with attempting to enter Singapore without a valid pass.

A district court heard that Mohd Sani told an Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officer that he did not have his passport with him and handed over his identity card.

Two auxiliary police officers arrived at the counter to escort him to the arrival car secondary office.

Mohd Sani drove and stopped his car at the entrance. He was then directed to park his car outside the office - but instead he sped off towards the exit of the carpark and green channel zone.

The panic button was activated and the checkpoint was locked down for eight minutes.

Mohd Sani's car stopped before the ramp, where vehicles were awaiting checks.

He was detained after he refused to alight from his car when ordered to do so by two auxiliary police officers who gave chase.

His lawyer Nasser Ismail said he has had a history of psychotic disorder and acute psychosis since 2008. His employer had told him to go home that day as he was behaving "abnormally". Instead, he decided to visit a friend in Tuas.

His sentence was backdated to April 23. The maximum penalty for the offence is a $1,000 fine and six months' jail.

Youth robbed man of $219k on day he turned 19

The Straits Times
Monday, Jun 09, 2014

A 19-year-old Malaysian who robbed a man of $218,726 with four others on his birthday was jailed for 30 months and ordered to be given six strokes of the cane yesterday.

Vickyneswaran Garichandran, who is unemployed, admitted to robbing Malaysian Tay You Hock, 52. He wrongfully restrained Mr Tay in the hold-up in broad daylight on an overhead bridge in Woodlands Avenue 5 on Aug 2 last year.

The other four - Suthagar Annamalai, 33, also a Malaysian, and three known only by their nicknames - are on the run.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mansoor Amir said the victim commuted daily on his motorbike from Johor to his sister's textile shop in Woodlands Centre Road, where he also helped at his family's money-changing business.

The group had been observing the textile shop from a nearby coffee shop in July last year and one of them even followed the victim and reported on his movements to the rest.

Mr Mansoor said Suthagar invited Vickyneswaran to join him in the robbery as he knew that the youth was facing financial difficulties. Vickyneswaran, though afraid, agreed to do so.

On Aug 2 - the day he turned 19 - he followed Suthagar to the coffee shop in Woodlands and met the other three.

Both Vickyneswaran and a co-accused named Guna confronted Mr Tay as he was on the overhead bridge, heading towards two banks to deposit a total of $218,726.

Guna grabbed the victim's neck from behind and lifted him up. Mr Tay tried to hold on to his bag and was punched during the ensuing struggle. The sling broke and Vickyneswaran grabbed the money and ran towards his accomplices, who were waiting on two motorcycles at the other end of the bridge.

Vickyneswaran, who was given RM5,000 (S$1,946) for his role in the crime, was arrested on April 3 this year when he tried to enter Singapore.

He could have been jailed for up to 10 years and given at least six strokes of the cane.

Foreigner Caught Smuggling Live Birds in His Jeans at Guangzhou Airport [UPDATE]

Posted: 06/9/2014 8:00 am

bird-smuggle-01.jpg

Never underestimate the extent a pet owner will go to shield his beloved pet from Guangzhou’s air pollution.

On June 6, Guangzhou Baiyuan Airport security guards discovered a very creative way of smuggling by finding two live birds in a pair of jeans.

A foreigner was at the security check before boarding a plane to Singapore when security guards noticed the cuffs of his trouser legs were suspiciously bloated. A search revealed two hidden birds wrapped in white cloth, Yangcheng Evening News reported.

When asked the motive behind the smuggling operation, the foreigner said he was planning to take his birds to Singapore due to Guangzhou’s bad air quality. Unfortunately, the airline he chose does not allow live animals on board, and the poor guy now has to get one of his friends to send the birds to Singapore for him, hopefully with less hassle.

For now, his two little birds have to endure more of Guangzhou’s bad air.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sessions Court here today issued a warrant of arrest for controversial blogger Alvin Tan for failing to surrender back his passport to the court after it was released to him for travel to Singapore.
Judge Abdul Rashid Daud issued the order following a request by deputy public prosecutor Haffiza Jemali.
"The accused had requested for the temporary release of his passport last May 18 and would return it before June 4, but he had failed to do so," said Haffiza.
Lawyer Chong Joo Tian, representing Tan, did not object to it, saying that he was not able to contact Tan after he took possession of the passport. The court then set July 18 for mention.
On May 12, Abdul Rashid had granted an application by Tan and his partner, Vivian Lee May Ling, also an accused in the case, to have their passports released.
Abdul Rashid Daud made the order after Chong told the court that his clients would be in Singapore to shoot a documentary film on their lives there. The couple were allowed to retain their passports between May 18 and June 3 to enable them to travel to the island republic.
Lee, who was in court today, surrendered her passport on June 3.
Alvin Tan or his full name, Tan Jye Yee, 26, and Vivian Lee or Lee May Ling, 25, were charged with making a seditious posting on "Alvin and Vivian - Alvivi" Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/alvivi.swingers [3]) by uploading a photograph of themselves eating bak kut teh, a pork dish, with the greeting, "Selamat Berbuka Puasa with bak kut teh...fragrant, delicious and appetising" together with the 'halal' logo.
The offence under the Sedition Act 1948, was allegedly committed between July 11 and 12, at Kompleks Mutiara, Jalan Ipoh, 3 1/2 Mile, here.
The two were also charged under the Film Censorship Act 2002 for displaying pornographic pictures on https://alviviswingers.tumblr.com/ [4] at the same place between 9pm, July 6 and 2am, July 7, 2013.
Last April 23, the prosecution filed an appeal at the Federal Court against a decision by the Court of Appeal, made on April 21, in dropping one of three charges against the couple, on grounds that it was not applicable to non-Muslims. – Bernama

SINGAPORE - A jobless man found a way to pay for his expenses - by stealing from commuters on public buses.

Yesterday, 41-year-old Abdul Razak, an Indonesian, pleaded guilty to two charges of theft with 12 more charges taken into consideration during the sentencing.

The total value of items stolen amounted to $3,551.

Abdul Razak, who told the court he has four children to support, was sentenced to 10 months' jail after the District Judge noted that the offences were pre-meditated and wanted to set a deterrent sentence.

Court documents stated that at about noon on Jan 20 this year, Abdul Razak was on SBS Transit service 147, which was travelling along Middle Road.

He stood close to 29-year-old Indian national Chinnasamy Manimaran and used his own bag to cover Mr Chinnasamy's so he could reach into the latter's bag to steal his Samsung Note 2 mobile phone.

Mr Chinnasamy, a construction worker, had his work permit and DBS ATM cards inside the mobile phone cover.

When Mr Chinnasamy felt Abdul Razak touching his bag, he turned around to look at him. But the latter quickly alighted at the next bus stop, opposite Midlink Plaza.

Abdul Razak later sold the mobile phone, valued at $315, in Indonesia and discarded the other items.

At about 11am on July 25 last year, Abdul Razak boarded SBS Transit service 12 and sat beside 72-year-old retiree Leong Kum Choy.

Investigations revealed that he stole Mr Leong's wallet, which was in his left front pocket. Mr Leong, who had $600 cash in his wallet besides his bank and identity cards and a senior citizen ez-link card with a stored value of $20, discovered the loss only when he was about to alight from the bus in Chinatown.

Mr Leong had boarded the bus in Pasir Ris Drive 1.

Abdul Razak could have been jailed for up to three years and fined for theft.

SINGAPORE - An air steward was fined $10,000 yesterday for molesting a student at Zouk in January this year.

Salvadoran national Henry Bernardo Cortez Cerrato, 27, who was working for Qatar Airways, pleaded guilty to touching the 24-year-old's private parts through her jeans at the Jiak Kim Street nightspot at 4.07am on Jan 25.

The court heard that sometime after midnight, the victim and her friends entered Zouk and made their way to the bar counter. Her friends ordered alcoholic drinks but the victim did not consume any.

Cerrato arrived at around 3am. About an hour later, the victim was near the bar counter when she moved aside slightly to let Cerrato pass.

However, upon nearing her, he molested her and walked off.

The victim grabbed his shirt collar and questioned him, but he kept quiet and walked away.

The victim subsequently told her friends about the matter. They went round the nightclub looking for Cerrato and when they found him they alerted the club's security officers. Police were called and he was arrested.

Cerrato had touched the victim only fleetingly, said his lawyer, Louis Joseph.

District Judge Eugene Teo said the fine to be imposed must be of a sufficient amount to show that this kind of shameful act should never be repeated.

The maximum penalty for molestation is two years' jail, a fine and caning.

MIDDLEMAN: Tan got nine months' jail.

The complex web that can lead to a bogus marriage is clear from the union of Vietnamese national Dang Thi Hoang, 28, and Singaporean Soh Chin Chai, 38.

Dang was eager to secure a job here in February last year so she approached her Vietnamese friend Yen, when she was still in Vietnam, for help.

Yen - whose identity has not been established by the authorities - suggested that she could get married to a Singaporean man, reports The Straits Times.

The man, Yen had said, would sponsor her visit pass applications to enable her to prolong her stay here to secure employment.

The same month, Soh, whose occupation is unknown, had approached Singapore citizen Tan Wee Choon, 39, for financial help.

'MATCHMAKER': Soh planned it all.

On the eve of Valentine's Day last year, local odd-job worker Tan Hee Huat met Chinese national Huang Liyun for the first time.

That very day, they got hitched in a no-frills solemnisation ceremony at a ground-floor Housing Board flat in North Bridge Road.

The quick-fire wedding was arranged for the sole purpose of giving Huang, 41, a leg up in prolonging her stay here so that she could secure a job, reports The Straits Times.

Their "matchmaker", Singaporean Soh Leong Soon, 62, who also goes by the alias Sim Kok Eng, attended the ceremony.

Tan and Huang were each jailed for six months. For arranging the sham marriage, Soh was sentenced to eight months in jail.
