JOHOR BARU: A Malaysian fugitive who fled to Singapore and sought treatment there for a severed hand has finally been arrested in the island republic.
The man, in his 20s, whose hand was severed at the wrist in a gang fight on July 14 here, managed to slip into Singapore to get the hand reattached.
He apparently duped doctors here that he had a road accident and asked to be sent to Singapore for surgery.
An ambulance was arranged to transfer him to a hospital in the republic where his hand was reattached.
The fugitive, who works as a cook in the island republic, is a member of Gang 04 that was involved in a clash at a restaurant that left two men dead. Although he knew he was on the police wanted list in Johor, he flew from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur to return to his hometown in Perak to recuperate, and returned to Singapore for follow-up treatment for almost two months without being spotted by the authorities.
Singapore police arrested him and another suspect, also in his 20s, several days ago and handed them over to Johor police.
Nusajaya OCPD Supt Abdul Aziz Ahmad confirmed the arrests but declined to elaborate.
Sources said the two men killed in the July 14 clash were members of Gang 21, who were brutally hacked by several parang-wielding men at a restaurant in Bandar Selesa Jaya.
One of the victims died on the spot due to multiple injuries and the other was sent to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries several hours later.
It is learnt that one of the victims was a suspect in the murder of former Tenggaroh assemblyman Datuk S. Krishnasamy.

SINGAPORE: A 23-year-old Malaysian woman has been sentenced to seven months' jail for stealing valuables worth S$88,673.80 from her aunt.

Patricia Tan Mei Ling stole the items at around 2.30pm on January 27.

The valuables were stored in two locked suitcases and placed in her mother's flat at block 574, Pasir Ris Street 53.

They include a Rolex watch, a pair of jade earrings, a diamond ring and a diamond pendant.

Tan committed the crime with an alleged accomplice, her then-boyfriend, 25-year-old Gunasegaran Ramasamy.

After breaking open the suitcases near the flat, she went to a pawnshop with him.

They pawned the watch and jade earrings for S$1,800, even though the two items were worth $7,529.

Some of the other items, including the diamond ring and pendant were later either sold or pawned.

They received $9,350 for doing so and the money was used for their personal expenses.

Gunasegaran has been charged with being an accomplice but he failed to turn up in court.

A warrant of arrest has been issued and he is still at large.

Tan could have been sentenced to up to seven year's jail and fined.

A YOUNG Briton who committed a series of offences while on probation was jailed for nine months on Wednesday. Grant Callum Pearson, 17, had pleaded guilty last month to one count of mischief by smashing the side window of a car and four charges each of theft and criminal trespass in mostly the eastern part of Singapore.

He was out on police bail for fraudulent possession of a CashCard when he committed 31 offences, mostly with two other teens between March and May. The other two have since been charged. Twenty-three other charges were taken into consideration during his sentencing. Last month, the prosecution highlighted several aggravating factors when it sought a jail term for Pearson.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Andrew Tan said the teen was being investigated for fraudulent possession when he absconded and went on a spree of house trespass with intent to steal and damaging vehicles.
Pearson said he had learnt his lesson and begged the court then not to send him for reformative training. District Judge Ch'ng Lye Beng had called for both probation and RTC reports.

Pearson was found unsuitable to continue his probation but fit for reformative training. But since he had no one here to supervise him after his release from RTC, the judge sentenced him to three months on each charge. The nine months' jail was backdated to his remand on May 22.

A VIETNAMESE woman was fined $700 on Wednesday for soliciting at the Marina Bay Sands casino after she lost money in gambling. It is the first case of soliciting in a casino to come before the courts since the integrated resorts opened early this year. A district court heard that at 1.30am last Saturday, police received a call from security staff of the casino that they had detained a woman for soliciting for the purpose of prostitution.

Duong Linh Thao, 36, admitted to police that she had struck up a conversation with 50-year-old man at about 1am in the casino.
She then offered herself for sex for $200. Unknown to her, the man was a security operation manager at the casino and detained her.

In court on Wednesday, a tearful Duong said she regretted her actions. Speaking through the Vietnamese interpreter, she said that she had visited the Marina Bay Sands casino to gamble and ended up committing the offence after losing much of her money. As a first offender, she could have been fined up to $1,000.

Jailed for sexual grooming

By Elena Chong

Aggravating factor

'IT IS an aggravating factor because not only would he have the pleasure of viewing the footages repeatedly at his leisure, but also because he made use of the footages to issue a thinly veiled threat to release the videos onto the Internet if the victim did not comply with his instructions in the future.' - DPP Kevin Yong

poong.jpg

A MAN posed as a schoolgirl on a social networking site and cajoled an 11-year-old girl to do indecent acts infront of her webcam. Unknown to the victim, Poong Foo Yun, 25, a Malaysian, recorded her sexual acts, and later threatened to release the video onto the Internet if she did not comply with his instructions.

On Wednesday, the unemployed man was given a total of 19 months' jail on three charges. He had pleaded guilty to procuring a child to perform an indecent act; sexual penetration of a minor and sexual grooming in 2008. Three other charges were taken into consideration during his sentencing. Pressing for a substantial jail term, Deputy Public Prosecutor Kevin Yong cited several aggravating factors.

He said Poong used the Internet to deceive the victim into believing that he was a 15-year-old girl when he was 23 at the time.
Poong, who was arrested at Redhill MRT station in Oct when he turned up to meet the victim, preyed on the young and vulnerable victim to satisfy his own lust, said the DPP.

Jailed for nude pix threat

By Elena Chong

A CHINESE national who threatened to post nude pictures of his colleague if she did not give him him $5,000 was jailed for nine months on Monday. Wang Bo, then a cleaner, admitted to threatening to injure the reputation of Ms Qiu Xia, 24, a room attendant, with intent to cause alarm to her between June 28 and 30.

He was fined $4,900 or four weeks' jail for having obscene films at a rented premises at Beach Road on June 30. The court heard that the 23-year-old sent numerous SMS messages from a cellphone to Ms Qiu to demand $5,000 or he would post her nude pictures on the Internet. She made a police report. The cellphone was subsequently traced to Wang, who was arrested on June 30.

Investigation showed that Wang was repairing the victim's laptop when he found some of the victim's pictures in her laptop. He copied and transferred them to his own laptop. He later threatened to modify a picture of her into a nude picture and circulate it. Further investigation showed that the victim was a friend of Wang's housemate. As Wang was unhappy with her frequent visits to his place, he decided to send her the SMS messages to frighten her.
