kekeek thats one of my favourite hokkien songs as well. I suspect a lot of old hokkien songs has Japanese influences in them. Check out some of the oldies bellow and tell me if they sounded "Japanese" ?

Wahhaha sorry lah, its how I used to translate it with my friends while singing the song in hokkien and english. Rhymes as well, just try it during karaoke, fun times.

The group is proof that there is no reason why dialects can't co-exist with Mandarin. The PAP hung the old folks out to dry when they clamped down on dialects. It left this group to die out slowly as they could not communicate in either English or Mandarin. Although it is of absolute importance that we have a common language for communication among the different races, clamping down on dialects meant that those older folks could no longer communicate with the younger generation.

You are absolutely right, there is no reason why dialects should be clamped down at all. Look at the Malaysian Chinese, they can speak Mandarin, Hokkien, Cantonese, Hakka. There is another thread that says Malaysian Chinese doctor is sort after in Singapore because they have the language ability for different dialects and could communicate with the old folks in hospital. I suppose, LKY really hated and looked down on the dialects, hence the fierce clamp down on it.

Littlefish, what is your view on reviving dialects in Singapore? Can it still be done? If MediaCock allows dialect shows on tv with duel sound etc would this have improved the situation? We have Japan/Korea hours in subtitles yet we don't have shows in Cantonese or Hokkien.

It certainly can be done. Just look at Taiwan. Hokkien/Taiwanese and Hakka were previously frowned on by the old KMT government. The first thing is to make speaking dialects cool. This can be done through songs and movies. That is how the Koreans stirred up interest in their culture.

Of course, we must not make the same mistake again of promoting dialects over other languages. I mean that something like this is best left to the private sector. The government can maybe sanctioned private enterprises to set up a radio station/TV channel for dialects. What they need to do is to ensure that there will always be a common ground among all the races (i.e. everyone must at least be proficient in English, they can provide free classes for the old folks who want to learn).

I thought the government did try that before with Channel U etc a while back? Then it becomes "unprofitable" and falls everything back into mediaCoCk again? A lot has to do with government policy of allowing dialects to be shown. You right that it can be revived, but with an anti-dialect government its impossible that this would happen.

Channel U is a clone of Channel 8. The government also had to ensure that Channel U did not become too successful, otherwise it will mean the death knell of Channel 8. As I have said, they should simply refrain from engaging in private commercial activities. Right now, they are no longer fervently anti-dialect, they are just anti-others-eating-into-their-profits.
