I was going to work yesterday morning (6 May) and saw this
van with huge words on it. The van went by pretty fast so it was hard to capture
the full picture clearly. Here’s what it actually says:
Lesus Employment Agency Pte Ltd
“The Leading Agency In Skilled Foreign Worker Placement”
“Your Satisfaction; Our Commitment”

Here is their website (peppered with atrocious spelling mistakes): http://www.lesus.com.sg/
In their About page, here’s what they wrote:
In particular, I wish to highlight:
At Lesus, we strive to exceed your expectations by becoming a good
listener to understand your situation and needs. With locals shunning away from certain
industries, our main sourse countries are the followings:
In other words, they claim that they are focusing on recruiting foreign
workers doing jobs that our locals don’t want to do.
However, if you browse their other web pages, it said they can help Singapore
companies to recruit foreign workers for such job positions:
engineers and the other jobs listed above as Lesus claimed??? Are we REALLY
avoiding them???
With so many local PMETs being displaced and replaced (think of our taxi
drivers’ plight) while our foreign population continues to grow faster than you
can scream “6.9 million”, it’s horrifying to see such a “govt-awarded” firm
making such insensitive and sweeping statements.
Check out their About page to see the awards and accreditation they said they
have garnered from various government bodies [Link].
Yes, there may be some who shun some “unglamorous” jobs as inculcated by our
schools with elitist mindsets, but certainly there are many other locals who are
more than happy to snap such jobs.
For the record, I rent a HDB. I have neighbours who range from low to
mid-income earners. Some make ends meet by going door-to-door with their babies
on their hips selling handmade accessories and home-cooked food. Others have
told me their horror stories of them being terminated or discriminated at work.
And let me tell you, they are willing to do ANY job to get by just to make sure
their families are fed!
And unlike what Lesus claims that locals shun away from certain industries
(including the manufacturing industry as stated in their website), I DO work in
the manufacturing industry and am happily doing so.
May be that’s why the govt is giving awards to such companies cause like what
PM Lee said, he wants more foreigners to “belong” here:
PM Lee: “Singaporeans, new arrivals, people who are on permanent
residence here, people who are on employment pass here, all participating in one
big Singapore family… So that we feel that this is a place which is special,
which belongs to all of us and where we all celebrate one another’s festivals
and happy events together.”
